Magnus Carlsen raises $12 million for Freestyle Chess Grand Slam

Magnus Carlsen and Jan Henric Buettner announced on Thursday 25th July that they have raised US$ 12 Million in funding from VC Left Lane Capital. The new tournament series will showcase world's best players with compelling stories, in a completely new and attractive format for media, spectators, and consumers which aims to revolutionise the world of chess. The participants will be from the 25 Super Grand Masters part of Freestyle Chess Players Club all have an Elo rating of above 2725. The prize fund that will be distributed among the players will be $750000 for the first three events and then $1 Million for every tournament thereafter. Check the Press Release for more details. Dhrupad Kashyap dominates 6th Ayodhana Rating Open 2024

Dhrupad Kashyap scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 6th Ayodhana Rating Open 2024. He finished a full point ahead of the rest. Kushal O and Anup Shankar R scored 7.5/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Dhrupad's sole draw of the event was against the eventual runner-up, Kushal. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹50000, ₹30000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each. The tournament was organized by Chess Players' Parents Forum, Guwahati, Assam at Assam Down Town University in Guwahati, Assam from 9th to 14th July 2024. Samarth J Rao wins Tata Steel 4th All India FIDE Rated Chess Championship for Specially Abled players

Samarth J Rao (1770, KAR) won the Tata Steel 4th All India FIDE Rating Specially abled Chess Championship in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand! Samarth scored 7.5/9 points to clinch first place in the tournament. Venkata Krishna (1889, AP) also scored 7.5/9 points, but was placed second on tiebreaks. Yesu Babu K (1590, AP) secured 3rd place, scoring 7/9 points. The winner, Samarth, received Rs. 25000! Venkata and Yesu Babu received Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 15,000 each. The top 3 position holders of Open and Women's category received ChessBase 17! India claims 41 medals at 7th Western Asian Youth Chess Championships 2024

India has won a total of 41 medals including 14 Gold, 17 Silver and 10 Bronze medals at 7th Western Asian Youth Chess Championships 2024. A total of 32 medals were won individually and nine were team medals. FM Md. Imran won two Gold and two Silver medals in Under-16 Open. Aadya Gupta earned two Gold and a Silver in Under-14 Girls. Kavish Palaniappan K won two Gold medals in Under-8 Open. Hanya Shah got a Gold, Silver and Bronze medal each in Under-12 Girls. Ananya Raman received a Gold and two Silver in Under-16 Girls. Ayaan Garg won a Gold and Silver in Under-12 Open. Chinmay Kowshik received a Gold and Bronze in Under-14 Open. Aaranya R and Bijesh Divi won Gold in Under-8 and Under-10 Girls respectively. Deep Sengupta wins Najdorf Memorial for the second consecutive year

GM Deep Sengupta and GM Eduardas Rozentalis (LTU) scored 7.5/9 each at 23rd Najdorf Memorial A 2024. Deep won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Eduardas was placed second. GM Valery Kazakouski (LTU) and GM Lukasz Jarmula (POL) scored 7/9 each. They secured third and fourth place respectively. The multi-time Hastings Masters and former Commonwealth gold medalist won this tournament for the second consecutive year. This time he bettered his performance by scoring a half point more and remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the festival was 45000 PLN, 24000 PLN in A, 12000 in B and 9000 in C. The top three prizes were 8000, 4000 and 3000 PLN each respectively in the A category. This is Deep's second rating tournament triumph of the year.

Aarav Dengla prevails at 97th Championnat du Grand Paris Masters 2024, Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi second

14-year-old Aarav Dengla scored an unbeaten 7/9 to win 97th Championnat du Grand Paris Masters 2024. The teenager finished a full point ahead of the field. Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi scored an unbeaten 6/9 to secure second place. He also earned his second IM-norm in the process. GM Andrei Shchekachev (FRA) finished third scoring 5.5/9. Aarav drew with both runners-up, while Aakash defeated Andrei in the final round. The first prize was €2500 + trophy. The tournament was organized by Ligue IdF des Echecs at Lycee Blanche de Castille in Villemomble, France from 7th to 14th July 2024. Rinat Jumabayev wins 57th Biel Festival MTO, Leon Luke Mendonca second and Ayush Sharma third

GM Leon Luke Mendonca and IM Ayush Sharma made a quick 17-move draw in the final round of 57th Biel Chess Festival MTO. Thus allowing the Kazakhstan no.1, GM Rinat Jumabayev to catch up. Rinat defeated IM Alexis Tahay (FRA) to become the champion on tie-breaks. Leon finished and Ayush third. IM Mukhiddin Madaminov (UZB) also scored 7.5/10. He was placed fourth. GM Krishnan Sasikiran and GM Aryan Chopra are the only two other Indians to make a top ten finish. They scored 7/10 each to secure fifth and sixth place. In GMT Masters, R Praggnanandhaa defeated Abhimanyu Mishra (USA) in the final round to finish third with 24.5 points. The total prize fund in GMT Masters was CHF 28500. The most important step you will ever take is the very first step. Who knew that just one session on chess tournament organizing can sow the seed of a chess movement in the city of Hyderabad. This is the story of how the 1st ChessBase India Chess Festival in Hyderabad came to life in just fifteen days! Check out the tournament standings in this report. In this article, we share with you the story of organizing a Blitz Chess tournament and a problem solving competition in Hyderabad, celebrating the International Chess day on 20th July. Jaroslav Bures victorious at Znojemská Rotunda Open 2024, Sanket Chakravarty second

Top seed of the tournament, IM Jaroslav Bureš (CZE) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win Znojemská Rotunda Rating Open A 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Sanket Chakravarty scored sole 7/9 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. IM Neklan Vaskočil (CZE) was placed third scoring 6/9. GM Manik Mikulas (SVK) won the Blitz Open C 10/11. Sanket secured second place again, scoring 9.5/11. Jarsolav finished third 9/11. The total financial prize fund of Open A was 75000 CZK. The top three prizes were 15000, 10000 and 8000 CZK along with a trophy and medal each. The total financial prize fund of Blitz Open C was 6400 CZK. The top three prizes were 2000, 1400 and 1000 CZK along with a material prize each. 57th Biel Festival MTO R9: Ayush Sharma stuns Sasikiran, joins the lead with Leon

IM Ayush Sharma outplayed GM Krishnan Sasikiran in Round 9 of 57th Biel Chess Festival MTO. The teenager capitalized his opportunity when the legend made a minute positional mistake. There was an opportunity for the 'Indian wall' to get back and draw the game. However, it was not easy to spot. Ayush also earned his second GM-norm and joined the lead with GM Leon Luke Mendonca. They will inevitably clash in the final round to determine the winner. GM Liem Quang Le (VIE) defeated GM R Praggnanandhaa to win GMT Masters for the third consecutive year. New Guinness World Record in Chess

On International Chess Day, 20th July 2024, FIDE planned a monumental event to celebrate 100 years since it was founded. The attempt was to create the most number of games played in 24 hours on the very same day to set a new Guinness World Record. Players, organizers, arbiters, federations and associations all over the world ensured and contributed to this record. There were a few conditions - the tournament has to be registered beforehand, minimum time control was 3 minutes + 2 seconds and more. We contributed by organizing three tournaments - a Rapid rating in Mumbai, a Blitz rating Open in Bhopal and an open tournament in Hyderabad. Check out the results in a FIDE press release.
