Hikaru Nakamura (USA) defeated Arjun Erigaisi in the second game of Quarterfinals at Freestyle Grand Slam Tour Stage 2. The reigning World Fischer Random champion, showed his fantastic positional understanding, culminating with tactics to advance to the Semifinals. He will face Vincent Keymer (GER) in the Semis. The Germany no.1 knocked out Ian Nepomniachtchi. Their match is the only one which went to the tie-breaks. Keymer won the first tie-break and drew the next one. Fabiano Caruana (USA) won the second Classical game to eliminate Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA). Caruana will face Magnus Carlsen (NOR) who ended Nodirbek Abdusattorov's (UZB) journey towards the Finals. Semifinals Game 1 starts today from 1 p.m. local time, 4:30 p.m. IST. The top seeds had a relatively smooth start at 2nd Namma Bengaluru GM Category A (>1900) 2025. Generally GM tournaments witnesses some major upsets in the first round. That almost would have happened, if Sailesh R capitalized on his opportunity against GM Tornike Sanikidze (GEO). The top three seeds - GM Iniyan Pa, GM Karen Grigoryan (ARM) and GM Manuel Petrosyan (ARM) won their respectively games. A total of 316 players including 20 GMs, 40 IMs, 2 WGMs and 5 WIMs are taking part from 11 countries across the world in Open A. The total cash prize fund combining three categories is ₹5500000, ₹2500000 in Category A. The top three prizes are ₹450000, ₹350000 and ₹250000 along with a trophy each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹325200 + 70 trophies. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹18000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. Arjun Erigaisi drew with Hikaru Nakamura (USA) in the first game of Quarterfinals at Freestyle Grand Slam Tour Stage 2. The World no.4 had an opportunity to push for a win. However, he could not seize it. Later, Nakamura had a chance which he also missed. The game eventually ended in a draw. Magnus Carlsen (NOR) scored the sole victory of the day against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB). It means the World Rapid 2021 champion must win the second game to stay in the tournament. The remaining two Quarterfinals games between Vincent Keymer (GER) and Ian Nepomniachtchi, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) and Fabiano Caruana (USA) ended in draws. Arjun Erigaisi scored 6.5/11 to finish fourth in the Round-Robin stage of Freestyle Grand Slam Tour Stage 2. On the second day, he defeated Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) and Vidit Gujrathi, drew with Richard Rapport (HUN) and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA). The only loss he suffered was against Ian Nepomniachtchi who finished at the top of points table with 8.5/11, same as Magnus Carlsen (NOR). They finished 1.5 points ahead of others. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) scored 7/11 to finish third. Arjun will face Hikaru Nakamura (USA) in the Quarterfinals. The remaining three matches are: Vincent Keymer (GER) vs Nepomniachtchi, Carlsen vs Abdusattorov and MVL vs Fabiano Caruana (USA). Arjun Erigaisi handed Magnus Carlsen (NOR) his sole loss on the first day of Freestyle Grand Slam Tour Stage 2. Carlsen went on to win the next four games and move to the top of the points table. The World no.1 blundered by doing long castle at the wrong time which cost him material and he could not recover for the rest of the game. Arjun finished the day with 3.5/6. He is currently the top Indian performer. R Praggnanandhaa is at 2.5/6. The World Champion had a tough start 1.5/6. Vidit Gujrathi missed a chance to draw with Carlsen in Round 1. Freestyle Grand Slam Tour Stage 2 starts today in Paris, France. This will be the first time the four of five 45th Olympiad Gold medal winning Indian team members - D Gukesh, Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa and Vidit Gujrathi playing the same tournament. Since then, we all know that Gukesh became the 18th World Champion. Richard Rapport ad Nodirbek Abdusattorov have replaced Alireza Firouzja and Hans Niemann who withdrew from the tournament. There will be six rounds of Rapid games played today in the Round-Robin stage and the remaining five will take place tomorrow. The newly-wed Vidit will face Magnus Carlsen in the very first round. The top seed of the tournament became the champion due to better tie-break scores. The remaining five were placed second to sixth respectively. Kaustuv won this event for the third consecutive edition and completed a hat-trick of winning DD-DBCA Rating tournaments. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000, an increase of 25% worth ₹100000 from the previous edition. The top three prizes were ₹75000 + trophy, ₹60000 and ₹45000 each respectively.
