The fourth season of the Maharashtra Chess league 2016 was off to a rocking start as a bucket full of opportunities were grabbed and left behind. Full of interesting games in rapid time controls, this fourth season already saw a leader at the end of the very first round and the leaders do know how to navigate the tournament best — they dominated the second round! Vishy Anand defeated Anton Guijarro and Wei Yi got the better of Santosa Latasa. The Indian champion now faces the Chinese prodigy in the Leon finals. It will be a match of four rapid games with a time control of 20 minutes + 10 second increment. The game begins live at 8 p.m. IST. (4.30 p.m. Leon time) on 12th of June. Vishy Anand is in Spain and is taking part in a three day rapid event in Leon. Local boys Anton Guijarro and Santosa Latasa took on Vishy Anand and Wei Yi respectively. The fourth edition of the Maharashtra Chess League (MCL), the only professional league of India, is being held from June 11 -15, 2016 at the PYC Hindu Gymkhana, Pune. The six-team event with six players a side will be a rapid tournament (25mins + 10 sec increment) where the teams initially play a round-robin followed by a knockout between four teams to decide the winners. The seventh round witnessed a host of upsets — the top-seed Ivan Popov was shocked once again while Diptayan walked into the sole lead with a beautiful win over Shyaamnikhil. The eighth round was fairly sedate at the top with no 'shocking' results. But pursuing Diptayan were Himal Gusain, Visakh NR,and Boris Grachev of Russia, etc. IM Visakh NR (2400) was a full point behind Diptayan going into the eighth round, but then, just as in the 'Hare and Tortoise' story, he gained on his rival and ended up winning the tournament on the tiebreak. The Melbourne Chess Club celebrated its 150th anniversary by holding a tournament to determine the Grand Champion. Strong IMs like James Morris, Ari Dale. Guy West and Mirko Rujevic took part in the event. Although James Morris won the event, it was Vishal Bhat, 15-year-old boy of Indian origin with a rating of 1967, who made the headlines by finishing as the runner-up. Harikrishna finished sixth at the Shamkir Chess 2016. Things could have gone much better had the Indian converted the clear winning position he had against Eltaj Safarli in the final round. He made a blunder which would be quite apparent to even a beginner. Thus he ended the tournament with -1, and lost eight elo points. Mamedyarov won the event in a thrilling tiebreak against Caruana. Hari had actually beaten Shakhriyar in the second round! One can only be in awe of the Azeri player's fighting skills!
