Mumbai 07: Diptayan steers clear; Popov loses again

by Priyadarshan Banjan - 07/06/2016

The seventh round was eventful in more than one ways — the top board saw the clash between the two leaders and a handful of youngsters took on the might of their more fancied rivals. The games were fun! The top seed Ivan Popov was shocked once again while Diptayan walked into the sole lead with a beautiful win over Shyaamnikhil. An illustrated report.

Mumbai 07: Diptayan steers clear; Popov loses again

The Mumbai Mayor's Cup is into its ninth edition and it has been growing in size ever since its inception. For years now, it has been a reason behind the rise of many a talent in India. The ninth edition carries a prize fund of Rs. 27 lakhs, Rs. 11 lakhs of which is earmarked for the Elite category, a ten-round swiss with the time control of 90 min. + 30 sec. per move increment.

The seventh round was eventful in more than one ways — the top board saw the clash between the two leaders and a handful of youngsters took on the might of their more fancied rivals. The games were fun!

The welcoming signboard to the tired players arriving at the tournament arena after a long commute in packed trains or clogged traffic in pollution-friendly rickshaws or cars.

The chess fans were all glued to the clash between the top seed GM Ivan Popov (2645) and FM Srinath Rao S.V. (2218).

Both of them were on 4.0/6. Popov had a fine position...

...until he made some woozy decisions that left him suffering.

And Srinath Rao won the game!

Later, he commented that this was the first time he was defeating a 2600 grandmaster. He had once let go a player of similar caliber by blundering in a won position and hence, towards the end, most of his moves were made with trembling hands and constant re-checking.

Untitled Himal Gusain (2440) took down Sammed Shete (2256) and also moved to 6.0/7.

Shailesh Dravid (2171) is having a good tournament. He is at 5.0/7.

Dravid was playing White here. White to play.

IM Visakh N.R. (2400) held GM Swapnil Dhopade (2504) and both are on 5.5/7.

Mumbai's very own IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni (2278) joined the party, defeating Bangladeshi GM Ziaur Rahman (2521).

IM Saptarshi Roy, after an early upset, has made a fine comeback.
