One of the most exciting open events in the world of chess is back: The Gibraltar Masters 2017. With 248 players from 53 countries in the Masters section, 71 of them being grandmasters, this is an extremely strong tournament. Eight players are the favourites to win the tournament. Be it amateurs, masters or the absolute bigwigs of the business, all have arrived at the Caleta Hotel in Gibraltar for the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival. Scheduled to be played between January 23 and February 4, the Festival features five events for players of all strengths. The highlight obviously is the Master’s Open which is a star-studded field of 255 players includes a wide array of players from A-listers like Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Hou Yifan on one hand and a ton of norm-hungry youngsters on the other – the exact ingredients for some spectacular chess. Furthermore, there’s a total prize fund of £ 190,000 up for grabs with £ 23,000 for the first prize winner!
Adhiban qualified to the Masters section by winning the Tata Steel Challengers in 2016. The Indian GM is showing no signs of being a qualifier! He is beating these top guys right, left and center. In the last four rounds he has scored 3.5/4 against an average opposition of 2770! In the eighth round, he beat Dmitry Andreikin with 1.e4 e5 2.Nc3!? Harikrishna drew his game against Wei Yi. The tournament is heating up but the first place is becoming distant for most of the players. Because Ukrainian GM Adam Tukhaev has galloped ahead to a perfect score! The 1st Queen's Gambit rapid chess was held on the 14th and 15th of January 2017 in Kolkata. It was a strong tournament with the first prize of Rs.15,000 and the participation of two IMs and one WGM. IM Arghyadip Das of Railways emerged victorious followed by IM Suvrajit Saha. The most impressive part about the tournament was the organization - no spot entries, beginning the games on time and ending them before the schedule. The 92nd edition of the Hastings Chess Congress was held at the Horntyte Park Sports Complex between December 28, 2016 and January 5, 2017. The 100 player field included 12 Grandmasters and 14 international Masters from 23 countries. Beating that stiff a competition, after 9 rounds of play, India's GM Deep Sengupta emerged victorious with a score of 7.0/9. The fourth round of Chennai Open 2017 was scheduled to be held on 20 January 2017. Things were on course when news arrived that Chennai is enforcing a 12-hour shutdown on itself in protest against the Supreme Court ruling on Jallikattu, a popular Tamil ethnic sport. The organizers were forced to abandon the idea of playing a round amidst this protest and postponed it to the next day. The games finally began an hour back. Niklesh Jain reports from Chennai.

Magnus Carlsen and Wesley So are right behind him on 3.0/4. Harikrishna drew his game against Sergey Karjakin and is on +1 after four rounds.
