GM Diptayan Ghosh finished second as Indians took five of the top ten positions. Niranjan Navalgund scored his first grandmaster norm in the ninth round itself but two more norms were scored. It was a day of two draws for the Indian players, but not uneventful ones. Adhiban's London System was quite hard for Levon Aronian to crack, while Harikrishna gave Eljanov some anxious moments before the game ended in a draw. Two youngsters Wei Yi and Richard Rapport played some excellent chess but had contrasting results. Wei Yi was rewarded with a full point, while Richard lost a better position to Wesley So. The first round of the Tata Steel Masters 2017 began on Saturday with some exciting chess. Adhiban had clear winning chances against Loek van Wely, but couldn't convert it into a full point. Harikrishna, on the other hand, had a pretty dull draw against Levon Aronian in the theoretical lines of the Marshall. On Sunday, Adhiban and Harikrishna will face off against each other. Murali Karthikeyan played some flawless chess on Thursday to power into sole lead with 6.0/6. He beat Lalith Babu and Andrei Deviatkin. The Indian GM is already gaining 16.7 Elo points and has an astronomical performance of 3164! He is followed on 5.5/6 by Farrukh Amonatov.
