MPL National Teams 2023 R7: AAI continues their winning streak

AAI continues their winning streak at MPL 42nd National Team Chess Championship 2023 Open. Odisha lost to them 1.5-2.5. GM Abhimanyu Puranik scored the important victory which helped his team AAI win their sixth match. AAI maintains their sole lead 13/14, two points ahead of RSPB A and PSPB 11/14. In the Women's event, PSPB defeated Maharashtra 2.5-1.5. AAI scored their fourth whitewash of the event, it was against Telangana in the fifth round. Both teams are in the lead 9/10. If both teams maintain their match points same, eventually game points will become a factor in determining the champions. Round 8 Open and Round 6 Women starts today at 10 a.m. IST. Aravindh Chithambaram clinches 19th International Chess Solving Contest 2023

When it comes to competitions and championships related to chess, tournaments is the first thing that comes to mind. However, the multifarious nature of chess has another type of competition - puzzle solving. On Sunday 29th January 2023, Mount Chess Academy organized 19th International Chess Solving Contest 2023. The event saw the participation of Grandmasters and youngsters. The reigning National Rapid and Blitz champion, GM Aravindh Chithambaram and former National champion, GM Karthikeyan Murali secured the first two places. Both of them well known for their puzzle solving abilities apart from their usual skills at the conventional chess. Doctor S Manikumar secured the third place. Alexandra Kosteniuk wins Munich GP 2023, Humpy second

WGM Zhu Jiner ended GM Alexandra Kosteniuk's unbeaten streak at Munich GP 2023. However, a last round loss did not affect Kosteniuk's claim towards the first place, since GM Koneru Humpy drew her game with GM Tan Zhongyi. Humpy secured second place 7/11, a hallf point behind Kosteniuk 7.5/11. The 20-year-old Jiner scored an IM-norm. Although a draw was enough for it, still she went for the win. GM Nana Dzagnidze drew with GM Harika Dronavalli to finish third. Harika secured fourth place. Both Humpy and Harika remained undefeated throughout the tournament. MPL National Teams 2023 R5-6: Defending champions AAI in domination mode

The defending champion, AAI (Airports Authority of India) defeated the top seed PSPB in Round 5 Open. The reigning Asian Junior Open champion, scored the key victory over GM Vaibhav Suri to ensure AAI scores a 2.5-1.5. In the sixth round, they defeated RSPB convincingly 3.5-0.5 and moved to 11/12, two points ahead RSPB A, Odisha and PSPB. RSPB A denied PSPB a win as their match ended in a draw. In the Women's event, AAI decimated Maharashtra 4-0 to jump into the lead. Tamil Nadu A went down 0.5-3.5 against PSPB allowing them to get into the lead with AAI at 7/8 each. Arjun Erigaisi will feature in 56th Biel Chess Festival GMT 2023

44th Olympiad individual Silver medalist, GM Arjun Erigaisi has participated in the Master Tournament of the historic Biel Chess Festival thrice - 2018, 2019 and 2021. For the first time in his career, he will play in the Grandmaster Tournament (GMT) along with seven other world-class players. They are - World no.22 and China no.2 Yangyi Yu, World Blitz 2013 and 55th Biel GMT 2022 champion Liem Quang Le, World no.40 and Romania no.2 Bogdan-Daniel Deac, World no.45 and Germany no.1 Vincent Keymer, World no.47 and Egypt no.1 Bassem Amin, Czech Republic no.1 David Navara and France no.3 Jules Moussard.

Munich GP Round 10: Kosteniuk barely escapes with a draw against Humpy

GM Koneru Humpy was on the verge of ending GM Alexandra Kosteniuk's unbeaten streak. First, she missed a tactical opportunity to convert her decisive advantage. Then she lost her advantage in the queen endgame, allowing the tournament leader to remain unscathed. GM Harika Dronavalli scored her first win of the event after nine draws, against GM Anna Muzychuk who suffered her third consecutive loss. Kosteniuk maintains her full point lead 7.5/10 over Humpy 6.5/10 at Munich GP. She must beat GM Tan Zhongyi in the final round and hope WGM Zhu Jiner wins against Kosteniuk to tie the score. MPL National Teams 2023 R4: PSPB emerges sole leader

PSPB managed to beat RSPB B by a minimum margin to emerge sole leader 8/8 at MPL 42nd National Team Chess Championship Open 2023. GMs Karthikeyan Murali and Surya Sekhar Ganguly scored the wins for PSPB. AAI and RSPB A, are close behind at 7/8. Both teams are yet to suffer a single game loss. Bihar B scored an upset victory over LIC by 1-3. The batte of the top two teams in the Women's event ended in a draw. IM Padmini Rout and WGM Divya Deshmukh scored wins for PSPB and AAI respectively. Today is the last double round for the Open section. Round 5 Open and Round 4 Women starts today at 10 a.m. IST. The CCT Pragg Scholarship of Rs.2,07,530 goes to 11-year-old Ethan Vaz. In this article, we share how this entire scholarship was conceptualized. Ethan also had a conversation between the man who made this scholarship possible - Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa! We also asked some questions to Ethan's father Edwin Vaz about what this scholarship means to them. Ethan is one of the biggest talents in Indian chess. Speaking with Pragg was an inspiring moment for the youngster. Munich GP Round 9: Can Humpy stop Kosteniuk?

GM Koneru Humpy is the only one who has the opportunity to stop GM Alexandra Kosteniuk. Humpy won her second consecutive game as she positionally outplayed the Germany no.1, GM Elisabeth Paehtz. Since Kosteniuk drew her game with GM Nana Dzagindze, she is now at 7/9, a full point ahead of Humpy 6/9. Humpy and Kosteniuk are the only two players who are still undefeated so far. They will face each other in the penultimate round which will be a virtual final as the result of the game will have a huge implication towards the winner of Munich GP 2023. Kishan Kumar of Bihar A scored the biggest upset of the second round at MPL 42nd National Team Chess Championship Open 2023. He defeated the GM Deepan Chakkravarthy (RSPB B), who has a wealth of knowledge. Kumar Gaurav held the reigning Commonwealth champion, IM P Shyam Nikhil to a draw. On the top board, WGM Swati Ghate (LIC) held GM Vaibhav Suri (PSPB) to a draw. Although the latter was losing in the endgame. GM G N Gopal (PSPB) scored a crucial victory over GM Pranesh M, to ensure his team PSPB wins over Tamil Nadu B. Adamas University dominates East Zone Inter University Women Chess Championship 2022

Adamas University won East Zone Inter University Women Chess Championship 2023 with a perfect score 10/10. For the second consecutive year, they have won the tournament, scoring 100% and finishing two points ahead of the competition. Not only a perfect score but every single member of the team won all of their games, not a single individual draw was conceded. Second seeded University of Calcutta scored 8/10 to finish second. Their sole loss of the event was against the eventual champion. Jadavpur University edged past two more teams to finish third with a score of 7/10.

Magnus Carlsen wins Airthings Masters 2023

Magnus Carlsen set the tone of the Grand Final by winning the first game. After a draw in the second game, Hikaru Nakamura got a great opportunity to deliver the equalizer in the third game. Despite having the decisive advantage for the better part of the endgame, the World Fischer Random champion could not find a way to win the game. Carlsen was winning the fourth game too but he decided to draw the game as it was enough for him to win the Grand Final and clinch the Airthings Masters 2023. Munich GP Round 8: Humpy wins and moves to second place

GM Koneru Humpy defeated IM Alina Kashlinskaya to move to the sole second place. This was the Poland no.1's second consecutive loss at Munich GP 2023. Humpy seized her opportunity when her opponent did not provide correct resistance in the same color bishop endgame. GM Anna Muzychuk also erred in the rook and opposite color bishop endgame which seemed to have headed towards a draw. Thus, GM Alexandra Kosteniuk has once again increased her lead by 1.5 points to 6.5/8. Humpy is the only one at 5/8, followed by GM Elisabeth Paehtz and GM Nana Dzagnidze at 4.5/8 each. MPL National Teams 2023 R1: Srihari astonishes Adhiban

18-year-old Srihari L scored the biggest upset of the first round at MPL 42nd National Team Chess Championship Open 2023. The teenager earned his biggest win of his career against GM Adhiban. His teammate of Pondicherry, Umashankar A was also winning against GM G N Gopal. However, he settled for a draw by perpetual check. PSPB Men's team barely managed to avoid a draw and won their first round against Ponndicherry 2.5-1.5. AAI, RSPB B and RSPB A scored whitewash wins in the Open.
