Jinshi Bai wins 16th Paleochora Open 2023, Surya Sekhar Ganguly second

GM Jinshi Bai (CHN) scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 16th Paleochora Open A 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly, GM Ziaur Rahman (BAN) and FM Edvin Trost (SWE) scored 7/9 each. They shared the second place. Jinshi drew against Surya in the penultimate round. Both Surya and Ziaur remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the event was €10000. The top three prizes were €2000, €1500 and €1000 along with a trophy each respectively. IM Nubairshah Shaikh is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 6.5/9 and shared fifth place with ten more players. Photos: Chania Chess Academy

Top 3 remain unbeaten

Three players - GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly, GM Jinshi Bai (CHN) and GM Andreas Kelires (GRE) were the leaders 6.5/8 heading into the final round. Jinshi defeated Kelires and Surya drew with the top seed of the tournament, GM Hristos Banikas (GRE). Thus, Jinshi won the tournament, Surya finished second. GM Ziaur Rahman (BAN) got the better of FM Evaggelos Patrelakis (GRE) and 15-year-old FM Edvin Trost (SWE) won against GM Alberto David (ITA). Ziaur and Edvin shared second place with Surya.

The venue from the outside

A total of 150 players including 12 GMs, 5 IMs and 2 WIMs took part from 26 countries across the world in A group (>1800). The tournaments were organized by Municipality of  Kantanos – Selino, Chania Chess Academy, Region of Chania, Greek Chess Federation at Paleochora Primery School & Cultural Center of Paleochora in Paleochora, Greece from 19th to 26th July 2023. The time control for the Classical event was 90 min for 40 moves + 15 min for all game + 30sec per move from the first move.
