Zhongyi Tan convincingly clinches 4th Cairns Cup, Harika shares third place
GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) made a quick 19-move draw against GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI) to win 4th Cairns Cup 2024. Since a draw was enough for her to finish clear first, there was no point in risking it. The FIDE Women's Candidates 2024 winner scored an unbeaten 6/9 and finished a half point ahead of the field. GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) scored her second consecutive win of the event. She defeated IM Alice Lee (USA) in the final round to secure a clear second place 5.5/9. This is also her consecutive second place after the inaugural Norway Chess Women 2024. Four players - Kosteniuk, GM Harika Dronavalli, GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO), and GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) scored 5/9 each. They shared third place. Harika also remained undefeated. Anna Muzychuk clear second in consecutive tournaments, Harika undefeated
Only three players remained unbeaten in this tournament. Apart from the top two finishers - GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) and GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR), GM Harika Dronavalli also remained unscathed.
Anna Muzychuk - Alice
GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR, 2505) is very strong in the endgame. After 33.Rd7 Re7 she started to improve her position 34.c5 Ke8 35.cxb6 cxb6 36.Rb7 Kd8 37.Rxb6 Re2 38.Rxa6 Rxf2 39.Ra7 and it became increasingly difficult for IM Alice Lee (USA, 2368) to defend. 39...Rf6? 40.Rd7+ Kc8? Black needed to play Ke8 to defend her f7-pawn 41.Kd4 Rxc6 42.Rxf7 Rc2?? the final mistake. 42...Ra6 was the final defense. 43.Rxg7 Rxa2 44.Ke5 Rxg2 45.Rxg6 and it's over. White went on to win the game and finish clear second.
