19th Asian Games 2022 Team R5: Indian Women whitewash Mongolia 0-4

by Shahid Ahmed - 04/10/2023

Indian Women made a strong comeback by scoring a 0-4 whitewash victory over Mongolia in Round 5 of 19th Asian Games 2022. GM Koneru Humpy, IM Vaishali R, IM Vantika Agrawal and WGM Savitha Shri B, all four of them fought tooth and nail to earn this win. All four of their games went for 50 moves or longer. Indian Men were denied a victory by the tournament leader - Iran. R Praggnanandhaa scored the crucial win for the team. D Gukesh lost in a seemingly losing endgame. However, there was a way to defend which was certainly not easy to find. GM Vidit Gujrathi and GM Pentala Harikrishna drew their respective games. Indian Men will be facing China, the Women will be up against Uzbekistan in Round 6. It starts today from 3 p.m. local time, 12:30 p.m. IST. Photos: Official site

Men: Iran - India: 2-2

GM D Gukesh (2758) suffered the sole loss for his team against GM Parham Maghsoodloo (2707). GM R Praggnanandhaa (2727) scored the crucial victory against GM M Amin Tabatabaei (2685). GM Vidit Gujrathi (2716) and GM Pentala Harikrishna (2711) drew against GM Pouya Idani (2633) and GM Bardiya Daneshvar (2581).

Parham - Gukesh

Position after 63.Ra7+

63...Kf6 64.Rg7 Rc3 65.Rxg6+ Kf7 66.Kxh5 Ra3 heads towards a draw. However, 63...Ke6 which was played in the game would have been lost for Black if White had taken the g6-pawn immediately 64.Kxg6. Instead, 64.Rg7 Rc3 65.Rxg6+ Kf7 66.Kxh5 Ra3 would have led to similar position as earlier with 63...Kf6. However, Black probably felt that the position cannot be defended, so he resigned.

Praggnanandhaa - Tabatabaei

Position after 10...g5?

10...g5? when White hasn't castled is not a good idea. Praggnanandhaa exchanged his knight for two pawns 11.Nxg5 hxg5 12.Bxg5 Kg7 13.Qf3 Be6 14.Bd5 Rh8 15.0-0-0 Nb8 16.Bxf6+ Qxf6 17.Qxf6+ Kxf6 18.Bxb7 Nxd7 19.Bxa8 Rxa8 White went on to win the game using his rook and three pawns for Black's two minor pieces.
