15th Chennai GM Open R2-3: Bhaavan Kolla and ten more make a perfect start

Eleven players including Bhaavan Kolla have made a perfect start at 15th Chennai GM Open 2025. Bhaavan is the sole untitled player among the leaders pack. 13-year-old, IM Sathvik Adiga, the youngest with perfect score 3/3, had to work hard against Dinesh Rajan M to win a long queen endgame which lasted over 55 moves. The top three seeds - IM Aronyak Ghosh, GM Siddharth Jagadeesh (SGP) and GM Iniyan Pa, have scored comfortable wins so far. In Round 2, Siddhant Gawai, Siddhanth Poonja and Mayukh Majumder held GM Cristhian Camilo Rios Gomez (COL), GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE) and GM Evgeniy Podolchenko to a draw each respectively. Arushi Severin Helen D Silva scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win AICF Smart Girls Rating Open 2024 Rajnandgaon. Five girls - Navieka Jaiswal, Jesh Kesharwani, Shruti Sarkar, Aditi Pandey and Rashi Warudkar scored 7/9 each. They secured second to sixth place respectively according to tie-breaks. Arushi drew with the eventual runner-up, Navieka in the sixth round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹100000. The top three prizes were ₹21000, ₹15000 and ₹8000 along with a trophy each respectively. Smart Girls rating tournament is just like Chess for Everyone Rating tournament but only for female players, where the entry fee is low. Kedar Walke clinches Braunau Open C 2024

Kedar Walke scored an unbeaten 4.5/5 to win Braunau Open C (<1600) 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Johannes Leiner (AUT) and Frank Kreuzinger (GER) scored 4/5 each. They secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. The combined total prize fund was €2875, for Open C it was €450. The top three prizes in C were €200 + trophy, €100 and €75 each. The three-day five-round Swiss league tournament was organized by WSV ATSV Ranshofen Chess at Ranshofen Castle in Braunau am Inn, Austria from 13th to 15th December. Vijay Shreeram P scored the biggest upset of the first round of 15th Chennai GM Open 2025. He defeated GM Manik Mikulas (SVK). The 15th edition of the tournament witnesses the participation of 174 players including 16 GMs, 25 IMs and 4 WIMs in Category A from 19 countries across the world including India. Category B (Below 2000) is also underway and will conclude on 5th January. Category C (Below 1800) will take place from 6th to 8th January. The total prize fund of Category A is ₹2000000. Md. Reyan and Saranya Devi Narahari are 37th National Under-13 Open and Girls 2024 Champions

CM Md. Reyan (BIH), CM Prathamesh Sherla (MAH) and Pranav Sai Ram R S (TN) scored 9/11 each at 37th National Under-13 Open 2024. Reyan won the tournament due to better tie-break score, Prathamesh and Pranav secured second and third place respectively. Reyan drew with Prathamesh and lost to Pranav. Saranya Devi Narahari (TEL) scored 9/11 to become the champion in the Girls event. She finished a half point ahead of the competition. Four girls - Nivedita V C (TN), Nihira Koul (MAH), Aamuktha Guntaka (AP) and Deekshitha Modipalli (TEL) scored 8.5/11 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively. The total prize fund combining Open and Girls section was ₹800000. The top three prizes in both Open and Girls sections were ₹80000, ₹60000 and ₹48000 along with a trophy each respectively. Four Indians in World Top 13

Arjun Erigaisi maintained his rating 2801 and place World no.4 with a second place finish at Qatar Masters 2024. D Gukesh became 18th World Champion after dethroning Ding Liren (CHN). He lost a few rating points, however, he retained his World no.5 rank. R Praggnanandhaa won a game at SchachBundesliga. It fetched him 3.5 Elo rating points and moved him up to World no.13. Aravindh Chithambaram continues his ascension. He gained 7.8 Elo rating points to move to 2726 and World no.23. Currently, there are three Indians in World top 10, four in top 13, six in top 24 and nine in top 48. Among the Women, WGM Nandhidhaa P V is the highest gainer with 40.8 points. 10-year-old Safin Safarullakhan wins XV Gran Hotel Bali Blitz Nocturno 2024 Group B Sub-2000

Safin Safarullakhan and Hatim Bendriss (MAR) scored 7/8 each at XV Gran Hotel Bali Nocturno Blitz 2024 Group B Sub-2000. 10-year-old Safin won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Hatim secured second place. Four players - David Blanco Garcia Bajo (ESP), Mario Antonanzas Fernandez (ESP), Kevin D'Souza and Yohan Boricha scored 6.5/8 each. They secured third to sixth place respectively. The total prize fund was €2000, €1000 for each Open and Sub-2000 categories. The top three prizes in each group were €300, €200 and €120 along with a trophy each. Srihari L R convincingly clinches 4th Athens of the East GM 2024, Nitin second

IM Srihari L R scored an unbeaten 8/10 to win 4th Athens of the East GM Tournament 2024. He started the year 2024 by winning 14th Chennai GM Open 2023. Now he ended by winning this event. Srihari won both events convincingly. Six players scored 7.5/10 each. Out of them, IM Nitin S and IM Uurtsaikh Agibileg (MGL) secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The champion drew with both eventual runners-up. The total cash prize fund in the festival is ₹4400000 + two cars, six bikes and 100 cycles, for Category A (>2000) it is ₹2000000. Magnus Carlsen (NOR) suggested sharing the World Blitz Championship with Ian Nepomniachtchi after they drew three tie-break games in the Finals. In an unprecedented situation, apparently it was decided to make them cochampions. The online tournaments witness more number of Playoffs. If Armageddon is not there, infinite number of sudden death games were to be played until a clear winner was decided, well at least that's what the regulations implied. World Blitz Women 2024: Vaishali dominates the Swiss league, advances to the Quarterfinals

GM R Vaishali won the Swiss league stage of World Blitz Women 2024 convincingly. She decimated the field by scoring an unbeaten 9.5/11 and finished a full point ahead. Her Quarterfinal opponent will be - GM Jiner Zhu (CHN). The newly crowned, two-time World Rapid Women 2024 champion, GM Koneru Humpy was the only other Indian who was closest to make it to the Knockout stage. She scored 8/11, however, Jiner edged past her due to better tie-breaks. In the Open section, ten players scored 9.5/11. They are - Ian Nepomniachtchi, Fabiano Caruana, Magnus Carlsen, Wesley So, Alireza Firouzja, Hans Niemann, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Volodar Murzin, Daniel Naroditsky and Daniil Dubov. India bags 11 medals at Asian Amateur 2024

India has won a total of eleven medals at Asian Amateur Chess Championships 2024. Eight Indians won all those eleven medals in various categories. Sananda R won Gold in Under-1700 Women in all three events - Classical, Rapid and Blitz. Ruhani Raj Asudani won Silver in Rapid and Bronze in Blitz. Farhaan M won Gold in Under-1700 Men Classical. Aryan Raj clinched Gold in Under-1700 Men Rapid, Omkar Shelke secured Silver. Maharth Godhani earned Silver in Blitz Under-1700 Men. Smaraki Mohanty got Bronze in Under-2000 Women. Sriiyukthaa Marksim Karki Abirami received Bronze in Under-1700 Women. The total prize fund of the tournament was US$ 25000. The top three prizes in Under-2000 Women, U1700 Men and Women were $1500, $1200 and $1000 along with a trophy and medal each.
