Vishy Anand is the World Rapid Champion 2017

Vishy Anand played the tournament of his life to score 10.5/15, remain unbeaten and become the World Rapid Champion 2017. After 15 rounds of rapid chess, we had three leaders - Anand, Fedoseev and Nepomniachtchi. The tiebreak was a blitz encounter between the first two placed players. Nepo had to be content with the third spot and Anand and Fedoseev fought it out in two blitz games to determine who would take home the gold. It was Anand who finally won the title with a 2-0 win over Fedoseev. While the world thought that Anand would soon retire, the Indian maestro is busy beating the best players in the business!

World Rapid 02: Anand beats Carlsen making big strides towards the title

On the second day of the World Rapid and Blitz Championship, the tiger from Madras, Vishy Anand roared loud. Winning two and drawing the rest of his games, Anand has retained his joint second spot in the tournament and is only half a point behind the tournament leader, Vladimir Fedoseev. The biggest highlight of the day for team India was Anand's win against his archrival, Magnus Carlsen. And guess what, he did that with the black pieces! In the women's group, Harika is currently in the joint third place, despite losing her first game of the event to Aleksandra Goryachkina. Day 2 report. 

Bhopal 2017 Round 9: It's a fight with yourself!

"It's a race against yourself," says Himanshu Sharma. The Haryana GM had a dismal national premier and finished in the last spot after losing eight games! In the Bhopal International he has worked hard in the months leading up to it and going into the last round he is one of the joint leaders. No players have been able to make their IM/GM norms here, but the Bhopal International definitely has proved to be a great exposure for the local kids.

World Rapid and Blitz 01: Unbeatable Anand

Team India kicked off with a bang on day one of the World Rapid and Blitz Championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. After the first five rounds, Vishy Anand is the highest scorer from the Indian contingent. With an undefeated score of 4.0/5, Vishy is half a point behind tournament leaders Baadur Jobava and Vladimir Fedoseev. Besides Anand, Vidit, Adhiban and Hari also had a fantastic run on day 1. In the women's group, Padmini Rout and Harika Dronavalli are in a nine-way-tie for second with a score of 4.0/5. Bhopal 2017 Round 8: Vietnam's Korchnoi and Madhya Pradesh's Tal

It seemed like Timur Gareyev would run away with the Bhopal International 2017, but the Vietnamese GM Tran Tuan Minh had different ideas. He beat the top seed with the black pieces and snatched the lead. This gave a chance to Ivan Rozum as well to reach 7.0/8 and join Tran Tuan Minh. The duo play against each other today with as many as ten players breathing down their neck with 6.5/8. The tournament is moving towards an exciting finish. Absolutely not to be missed is the game by Madhya Pradesh's Mikhail Tal - Ankit Gajwa. He simply blew his opponent off the board with a series of spectacular sacrifices! 

World Rapid and Blitz 2017 begins in 4 hours, but no players' list

The World Rapid and Blitz Championship begins on the 26th of December at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The first round will take place at 4.30 p.m. IST, in a little over four hours from now, but there is no sign of players' list. Many top players have given this event a miss. Seven Israelis were unable to make it due to visa issues. The prize money is excellent and so are the conditions for the players. But can you call this a World Championship? When players who have qualified rightfully are unable to participate, is this fair? We would like to know your opinion. Bhopal 2017 Round 7: Gareyev impresses one and all!

Seven rounds have been completed at the Bhopal International 2017. GM Timur Gareyev is the sole leader with 6.5/7. He beat GM Alberto David. Timur is closely followed by seven other players on 6.0/7. They include Rozum, Khusenkhojaev, Sangma, Girish Kaushik, Himanshu Sharma, Yeoh Li Tian and Tran Tuan Minh. The tournament is spicing up and we have last three crucial rounds remaining to be played. However, the leader, Timur Gareyev isn't really interested in the standings, He gave a three hour blindfold clock simul to local kids! What a great spectacle it was! Bhopal 2017 Round 5+6: What separates a GM from an IM?

What is it that separates a GM from an IM? This is a question that we hear quite often. On the surface both IMs and GMs are strong players and it is not so easy to differentiate between them. However, when you go deeper you realize that grandmasters have certain qualities which are clearly superior. At the Bhopal International 2017 four GMs were pitted against four IMs and it was a complete massacre. The scoreline was 3.5-0.5 in the favour of GMs. After six rounds we have five players leading with 5.5/6. Bharat Singh Chauhan has been a great ambassador for the game of chess in India. Besides being the organiser of one of the biggest open tournaments in the world, the Delhi International GM Open, he has promoted Indian chess at all levels assuming important roles like President of Commonwealth Chess Association, Deputy President of the Asian Chess Federation, Chairman of the Technical Commission in FIDE and so forth. Roughly six months ago, he took over as the secretary of the All India Chess Federation for the second time. In this interview with IM Sagar Shah, he talks about his work so far as the AICF Secretary, his future goals, the role of the government and corporate sponsorship in promoting chess.

Bhopal 2017 Round 4: Four GMs to take on four IMs

Eight players have managed to stay on a 100% score with 4.0/4 at the Bhopal International GM Chess Tournament 2017. The day saw some very exciting games being play. Timur Gareyev played a nice game in the Trompowsky to beat Anup Deshmukh. Ivan Rozum outplayed his opponent from an endgame that was most probably just even. Alberto David sacrificed his rook in nice style and Atalik won the pretty easy game. Express: Aravindh Chithambaram wins Sunway Sitges 2017

The Sunway Sitges International 2017 was an extremely strong event with players from 43 countries, 26 grandmasters, 35 International Masters and 40 Fide Masters. India's Aravindh Chithambaram started as the 14th seed of the event. However, he played some sublime chess and went on to win the event with a half point margin scoring 7.5/9. After finishing second in National Premier, third in World Juniors, Aravindh has finally managed to clinch the top spot! He wins the tournament and takes home the first prize of 5000 euros! Express report.

ONGC-A are the Champions!

Team ONGC consisting of Sasikiran, Vidit, Deep Sengupta, Sethuraman and Debashis Das won the 29th PSPB Inter-Unit Championship that was in progress in Digboi, Assam. Second place went to IOCL-A and the third spot was won by BPCL. It all boiled down to how these three teams did against each other. ONGC was the most consistent beating BPCL and drawing with IOCL which gave them the title. IOCL drew both their matches to finish second. ONGC beats BPCL and draws against IOCL

We understand that the names ONGC, BPCL, IOCL etc. are confusing for you. You would rather like the names of the players to be mentioned along with these teams. However, we think it is important for you to know which company our top players play for. ONGC represented by Sasi, Vidit, Sethu and Debashis were able to beat the BPCL team of Hari, Gopal, Vaibhav and Abhijeet 3-1. The game between ONGC and IOCL was a close call with Lalith Babu scoring a crucial win over Sasikiran but Deep Sengupta pulling it back for ONGC by beating Surya Shekhar Ganguly.
