Super Knights Chess Academy invites you to 2nd Super Knights International Rating Chess Championship 2024. The second edition is offering a first prize of LKR 150000 and a total prize fund of LKR 1120000. A total of 66 prizes are up for grabs in Classical event. Entry is FREE for GM, IM, WGM, WIM, FM, WFMs and players rated above 1900. Travel grant is offered to GM, IM, WGM, WIMs having rating above 2200 (2000 for Women). Foreign players are given various conditions too. Last year we have already witnessed six different Indians - GM Deepan Chakkravarthy, IM Raahul V S, IM Kushagra Mohan, GM Swapnil Dhopade, Indrajeet Mahindrakar and IM Anup Deshmukh win a combined total of seven tournaments in Sri Lanka. Magnus Carlsen wins GRENKE Chess Classic for the third time

Magnus Carlsen (NOR) defeated Richard Rapport (ROU) 1.5-0.5 in the Playoffs win GRENKE Chess Classic 2024. This is the third time Magnus won this in his career. His previous wins were in 2015 and 2019. In the first Playoff game, Rapport made a tactical error. Magnus had no trouble seizing his opportunity. The finish might have taken slightly longer but then again the time control is only 10' + 2". So time played a role in a prolonged finish. In the second game, Rapport had quite a few chances to deliver the equalizer. He missed them all and it ended up in a draw. Thus, the Artist finished second. Arjun Erigaisi becomes the new India no.1 officially

Arjun Erigaisi became India no.1 officially in FIDE Rating list for April 2024. He becomes the second Indian since D Gukesh to cross Vishy Anand as India no.1 in a published rating list. Gukesh achieved it on 1st September 2023. Seven months later, Arjun did it. Arjun is now World no.9. After Vishy Anand, Pentala Harikrishna and D Gukesh, Arjun became the fourth Indian to make into World top 10. Currently, there are four Indians in top 16, five in top 25, eight in top 41 and ten in top 81. Nodirbek Abdusattorov is the biggest gainer of this list at the top. He gained 15.2 Elo rating points and stormed into World top ten at no.4. Among the Women, there are no changes at the top. Aravindh Chithambaram victorious at 50th La Roda Open 2024

GM Aravindh Chithambaram, IM Siddharth Jagadeesh (SGP) and GM Carlos Daniel Albornoz Cabrera (CUB) scored an unbeaten 7/9 each at 50th La Roda Open 2024. Aravindh won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Siddharth and Carlos were placed second and third respectively. Carlos drew against Aravindh in the final round in an exciting game. GM Karthik Venkataraman is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 7/9 to secure fifth place. The total prize fund of the tournament was €20000. Rinat Jumabayev wins Fagernes GM 2024, Abhimanyu Puranik second

GM Rinat Jumabayev (KAZ) and GM Abhimanyu Puranik scored an unbeaten 7/9 each at Fagernes GM 2024. The Kazakhstan no.1 - Rinat won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Abhimanyu finished second. Five players - GM Ido Gorshtein (ISR), GM Krishnan Sasikiran, IM Isik Can (TUR), IM Linus Johansson (SWE) and IM Mai Narva (EST) scored 6.5/9 each. They were placed third to eighth respectively. The top three prizes were €2400, €1600 and €800 each. However, prizes were shared equally among equal points scorer. GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. Playoffs between Magnus Carlsen and Richard Rapport to determine the winner of GRENKE Chess Classic

Magnus Carlsen (NOR) will face Richard Rapport (ROU) in the Playoffs to find the winner of GRENKE Chess Classic 2024. Magnus defeated Vincent Keymer (GER) with his usual grind in a supposed gridlock. He broke it wide open and Keymer succumbed. Magnus drew the tenth round game against Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA). Richard Rapport (ROU) also drew with the Frenchman in Round 9 before finishing the Round-Robin stage with another draw against Daniel Fridman (GER). Keymer, after losing to Magnus, defeated Ding Liren (CHN) twice in a day. He will battle MVL for third place. Playoff games will start today from 3 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST. FM Ritvik Krishnan scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Fagernes Blitz II 2024. He finished a whopping 1.5 points ahead of the field. GM Prraneeth Vuppala and IM Ludvig Carlsson (SWE) scored 7/9 each. They were placed second and third. GM Pranav Anand and CM Akshit Kumar J are the only two other Indians to make a top ten finish. They scored 6/9 each to be placed fifth and seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. This is Ritvik's first rating tournament triumph in 2024. Magnus Carlsen (NOR) scored 1.5/2 on the fourth day of GRENKE Chess Classic 2024 to maintain his sole lead. First he defeated Daniel Fridman (GER) in Round 7. Then he drew against the reigning world champion, Ding Liren (CHN) in the eighth round. Richard Rapport (ROU) won both of his games to make a strong comeback after losing two in-a-row. The world no.1, Magnus is still at the top 5.5/8, closely followed by Rapport at 5/8. Magnus will face Vincent Keymer (GER) and Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) in the last two rounds. FIDE Candidates 2024: All set for the chess tournament of the year in Toronto

The FIDE Candidates and Women's Candidates 2024 is set to take place in Toronto, Canada from 3rd to 22nd April 2024. This will be a historic event as for the first time both Open and Women's Candidates will take place simultaneously at the same time and place. Five Indians - three in Open and two in Women, the highest ever participation by Indians at this event, is another record that will be broken. The Opening Ceremony will take place on Wednesday 3rd April, while the first round starts on Thursday 4th April 2024 at 2:30 p.m. local time, Friday 5th April 12 a.m. IST. 50 players have made a perfect start at GRENKE Chess Open A 2024. Only two Indians - IM Divya Deshmukh and IM Manish Anto Cristiano F have started their event with a hat-trick of wins. The top seed, GM Arjun Erigaisi was held to a draw by promising Romanian talent - 12-year-old FM Henry Edward Tudor. The game reached at a queen vs rook and knight endgame after 34 moves. The boy defended for 102 moves and built a fortress to claim an important half point against the world no.14. 935 players are taking part in Open A (>1950), 1174 in Open B (<2000) and 793 in Open C (1400-1640), making this the biggest open chess tournament. Prraneeth Vuppala triumphs at Fagernes Slow Blitz 2024

GM Prraneeth Vuppala scored an unbeaten 6/7 to win Fagernes Slow Blitz 2024 Group A (>1800). He finished a half point ahead of the rest. FM Gunnar Lund (NOR) and IM Aksel Bu Kvaløy (NOR) scored 5.5/7 each. They secured second and third place respectively. 13-year-old Oda Skramstad (NOR) scored 6/7 to win Group B (<1800). Despite starting with a loss, she won her next six games in-a-row to finish clear first. FI Sushrutha Reddy, Kazim Yilmaz (NOR) and Amund Pihl Strand (NOR) scored 5/6 each. They secured second to fourth place respectively. GRENKE Classic R5-6: Magnus wins two in-a-row, storms into sole lead

Magnus Carlsen (NOR) won both games on the third day of GRENKE Chess Classic 2024. He is now the new sole leader 4/6. In the fifth round, he defeated Vincent Keymer. The Germany no.1 made a tactical error in the endgame against the world no.1. In Round 6, Magnus avenged his opening round loss against Richard Rapport (ROU). The Artist did not defend his position correctly against the onslaught on his king by the Norwegian. He exchanged his queen for Magnus' two rooks and arrived at a lost endgame. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) won an interesting game against Rapport in Round 5. Today is a rest day. Ashutosh Kumar triumphs at Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2024 in Mizoram

Ashutosh Kumar scored 8/9 to win 44th Robula Chess Trophy, Chess for Everyone Rating Open 2024 in Aizawl, Mizoram. Ashutosh won the tournament with a round to spare as he score eight straight wins. His last round loss did not affect his championship chances. Lalbiak Mawia, H Lalrinthanga and Saingura Sailo scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed second to fourth according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹95700. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹10000 and ₹7000 along with a trophy and certificate each respectively. This is Ashutosh's first rating tournament triumph of the year. His last rating tournament victory was in June 2014, nearly a decade ago. The objective of Chess for Everyone tournaments is to have a low entry barrier of only ₹250, encourage maximum players to take part in rating tournaments and gain rating.
