Nihal's game at 10 p.m. will decide whether he makes his 2nd GM norm

Praggnanandhaa wasn't able to score his second GM norm in the closed Round Robin tournament in Australia. But his friend and the equally brilliant Indian talent, Nihal Sarin has a chance tonight. Nihal is playing at the London Chess Classic and has played some excellent chess to be on 6.0/8. In the last round he is up against Szymon Gumularz rated 2376. Nihal's opponent is rated 131 points below him. The 13-year-old has to score a win in order to achieve his GM norm. Will he be able to make it? "Know not me for my disabilities but my abilities", these were the wise words of Robert Hensel, Guinness World Record holder for the longest non-stop wheelie in a wheelchair. These words are highly apt for the players at the 2nd physically disabled national championship 2017 which were held in Trichy from the 9th to 12th of November. The winners were Karthik Venkata Krishna and Jennitha Anto. In a wonderful gesture Vishy Anand visited the tournament hall and spent time with the players during the opening ceremony. London Chess Classic 06: One win and four draws again!

It was a wild day at the London Chess Classic yesterday. Ian Nempomniactchi plunged within striking distance from the tournament leader Fabiano Caruana after pulling out a win against Mickey Adams. Nakamura inexplicably missed a winning opportunity against Magnus Carlsen. Anand was caught off guard by Karjakin's opening novelty and decided to sign the truce within 20 moves. Padmini Rout wins her fourth consecutive national title!

It was one of the most tense finales that you would ever see at the final round of the National Championship. Four players had a chance to win the title. In the end it was Padmini Rout who held her nerve and emerged victorious. But it was after a lot of drama. In fact until the end of the fourth hour, we still were not clear who would win it. This is Padmini's fourth consecutive title, a feat that is only bettered by Viji in the history of Indian women's chess. London Chess Classic 05: Anand suffers a shocking loss to Caruana

Fifth round of the London Chess Classic began promisingly but ended with a shocking defeat for Vishy Anand at the hands of the tournament leader, Fabiano Caruana. With this win, Caruana has pushed himself a point ahead of his nearest rival, leaving Anand at the bottom of the leaderboard. Trying his best to keep Caruana's lead minimal, Magnus Carlsen grilled Wesley So for 68 moves trying to carve out a win, but So put up a heroic defence to save the day. MVL also got a promising position with black against Aronian but failed to convert. In this report, we have games, pictures and analysis of round five.

London Chess Classic 04: Caruana tastes first blood!

After three rounds of wait, round four of the London Chess Classic finally witnessed a decisive game. US number 1, Fabiano Caruana completely out-prepared Sergey Karjakin in the Sicilian Taimanove and forced the "Minister of Defence" to show the white flag after 42 moves of play. MVL also came very close to victory against Magnus Carlsen but slipped and conceded a draw. Levon Aronian succeeded in getting into the Marshall Gambit despite Anand's Anti-Marshall setup and managed to hold the former five-time world champion to a draw. Women's Premier Express report: Padmini takes it all

Four players started the eleventh round with 6.5/10. Only one of them was able to win the game and become the national champion! That was IM Padmini Rout. And she did it in style! This is her fourth consecutive national premier title. In this article we give you the express updates with a full report coming up soon. Second place went to Bhakti and third place was secured by Mary Ann Gomes.

After his win in the first round at the Lidums Australian Young Masters 12-year-old Praggnanandhaa slowed down a bit. First he made a draw with the white pieces against the top seed Adrien Demuth, this was followed by a quick draw against GM Vasily Papin. Then came the heartbreaking encounter where in a winning position Pragg blundered and lost the game. But he quickly regained his composure and scored his second win in the fifth round. As things stand, he is now on 3.0/5 and needs 4.0/4 to make his second GM norm. Can the boy do it?

London Chess Classic 03: Draws and missed opportunities

Draws seem to have gone viral at the London Chess Classic 2017. The third round also witnessed all games being drawn. But amid those draws, there was also struggle and missed opportunities in some games. Sergey Karjakin missed perhaps the biggest opportunity. With the black pieces against Aronian, he had a clearly better position when the Armenian offered him a draw. But short on time, Karjakin accepted! Anand was also a pawn ahead and had a pleasant position out of the opening against Carlsen. However, he too failed to capitalize and ended up splitting the point with the world champion. Round three report. 

Women's Premier 2017 Round 10: The leader is cursed!

Every time we have a sole leader at the national premier, that player falters. First it was Padmini who was leading the event around the halfway mark, then it was Nandhidhaa, followed by Meenakshi. Now going into the last round we have four leaders Meenakshi, Bhakti, Padmini and Soumya. Meenakshi is still in the pack of leaders in spite of her loss to Kiran, and the lady from Chennai has the best chance of becoming the national champion. The other girls too can steal the show. Our reporters Sagar Shah and Amruta Mokal are in Surat and they bring you all the round 10 action!

Day 2 of the London Chess Classic saw the players really worked up a sweat to pull out a victory. Vishy Anand grilled Mickey Adams for 48 moves before finally signing peace; Hikaru Nakamura went all guns blazing at MVL with the Sicilian Dragon and triggered wild complications; Wesley So flung all his kingside pawns to attack Nepomniachtchi's kingside; Carlsen also expanded on the kingside to test Karjakin; Levon Aronian and Fabiano Caruana indulged in what GM Yasser Seirawan called trench warfare. But despite all the excitement, every game fizzled out into a draw. We have an illustrated report with game analysis.

National Premier 2017 Round 8+9: It's impossible to determine the winner!

The women's National Premier 2017 keeps getting intriguing. After we had a four way tie at the top post round seven, there is now a sole leader after nine rounds - Meenakshi Subbaraman. The WIM from Chennai has shown nerves of steel and great fighting qualities to ensure that she makes the task of her opponents as difficult as possible. With two rounds to go anything is possible at this national premier. We are heading to an exciting end. What you must absolutely not miss is Bhakti's beautiful study-like checkmate to Soumya's king!
