FIDE World Cup 2023 R4.1: Vidit vanquishes Bacrot, Vincent Keymer beats Magnus Carlsen for the first time

GM Vidit Gujrathi scored a scintillating victory over GM Etienne Bacrot in Round 4.1 of FIDE World Cup 2023. Vidit launched a devastating attack on the kingside by rolling his pawns f4, e5, f5, f6 which yielded him a decisive advantage within the first 20 moves. He needs a draw in the second game to advance to the next round. GM Arjun Erigaisi missed a great opportunity to win in the rook and extra pawn endgame against GM Javokhir Sindarov (UZB). GM R Praggnanandhaa got a great grip in his position against GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA). He loosened it and allowed his opponent to escape. GM Harika Dronavalli survived a lost pawn endgame which was a bit complex, against IM Eline Roebers (NED). Out ofseven Indians, GM Koneru Humpy suffered the sole loss among Indian players, against GM Bella Khotenashvili. Humpy needs to win tomorrow to force tie-breaks. Germany no.1 GM Vincent Keymer defeated the world no.1 GM Magnus Carlsen for the first time in his career. The Norwegian must win tomorrow to force tie-breaks. Velammal MHS Mogappair clinch Gold at World Schools Team U-12, Bronze for Velammal VA in U-18 2023

Velammal MHS Mogappair scored a perfect 16/16 to become the inaugural World Schools Team Under-12 champions. Just like at the National championship, once again they scored 100% to win the Gold. They finished four match points ahead of the field. Lviv Academic Gymnasium (UKR) scored sole 12/16 to secure second place. National Physics and Mathematics (KAZ) edged past four other teams to finish third scoring 10/16. The Under-18 category was won by Istanbul ENKA High School (TUR). They also scored a perfect 16/16 to become the champion. Republican School of Phyics and Mathematics (KAZ) and Velammal Vidyalaya Alapakkam, Chennai scored 12/16 each. They were placed second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Both champions won their respective categories with a round to spare. Trophies andmedals were the prizes for the top three finishers in each category. There were also top three board prizes for all five boards.

Sammed Shete clinches Zadar Chess Festival 2023, Bhakti Kulkarni third

IM Sammed Jaykumar Shete scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win Zadar Chess Festival A 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. GM Alexander Delchev (BUL) and IM Bhakti Kulkarni scored 7/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. Sammed drew against both runner-ups. Bhakti also remained undefeated and drew against the top two finishers. The total prize fund of the event was €10000. The top three prizes were €1600, €1100 and €700 along with a trophy each respectively. This is Sammed's seventh tournament triumph of the year. FIDE World Cup 2023 R3 TB: A short day at the office for Nihal, a grueling long one for Vidit and Harika

GM Nihal Sarin needed only two 25'+10" Rapid games to eliminate Romania no.2 GM Bogdan-Daniel Deac. The teenager will face the former world championship challenger, GM Ian Nepomniachtchi in Round 4. Both GM Vidit Gujrathi and GM Harika Dronavalli had long day. After starting the day with a loss, Vidit made a strong comeback to knock out Germany no.3 Matthias Bluebaum. GM Harika could have finished things in the second Rapid game. However, she missed her chance and had to battle in six more tie-break games to finally eliminate IM Lela Javakhishvili (GEO). Harika will face IM Eline Roebers (NED) in the Pre Quarter-finals. GM Jaime Santos Latasa (ESP), GM Nijat Abasov (AZE) and IM Teodora Injac (SRB) eliminated FIDE World Cup 2019 winner - GM Teimour Radjabov (AZE), World no.7 GM Anish Giri (NED) and the defending FIDE Women's World Cup winner - GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI). Aoshima Mirai wins Japan Chess Classic 2023

GM D Gukesh defeated GM S L Narayanan in Round 3.2 to advance to the fourth round of FIDE World Cup 2023. His opponent will be the winner of the tie-breaks between GM Francisco Vallejo Pons (ESP) and GM Andrey Esipenko. GM Arjun Erigaisi won a grueling nearly five-hour long battle against GM Vladimir Fedoseev. GM Praggnanandhaa drew a rollercoaster battle against GM David Navara (CZE) to advance to the next round where he will face the reigning World Fischer Random champion, GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA). HelpChess is the name of the ChessBase India Foundation that helps budding chess players who are in need of financial assistance. For the year 2022-23 HelpChess, which is an 80G registered Charitable Trust, helped chess players to the tune of Rs.26 lakh. Only one out of eleven Indians, have won their first game of FIDE World 2023 Round 3. GM R Praggnanandhaa defeated GM David Navara with some beautiful knight maneuver. It was a tough day for the Indian women. IM Divya Deshmukh, IM Vaishali R and WGM Mary Ann Gomes, all three of them suffered a loss against GM Aleksandra Goryachkina, GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) and IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL) respectively. The all-Indian battle between S L Narayanan and Gukesh ended in a draw. The Italy no.1 GM Daniele Vocaturo defeated former World Rapid champion, GM Daniil Dubov. Laxman clinches 2nd Athens of the East Blitz Rating Open 2023

GM Laxman R R scored 9/10 to win 2nd Athens of the East Blitz Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. FM Ram Aravind L N and 12-year-old Aakash G scored 8.5/10 each. They secured second and third place respectively. Ram's only loss was against the eventual winner, Laxman. The total prize fund of the event was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹25000 + trophy, ₹20000 and ₹15000 each respectively. This is Laxman's fifth tournament triumph of the year. After this, he won a team Blitz event at Kavala, Greece. FIDE World Cup 2023 R2 TB: Mary knocks out Kateryna Lagno, Vidit and Arjun Erigaisi move to the next round

The two Indians who shined brightly in Round 2 tie-breaks are WGM Mary Ann Gomes and GM Karthik Venkataraman. Yes, Karthik got eliminated by the 'Speed King' GM Hikaru Nakamura. However, the reigning World Fischer Random champion clearly believes that he is underrated, will cross 2600 soon and defended like 2700 by finding only best moves in time pressure. We already knew how strong Karthik is, now the world gets to know. Mary defeated the former three-time World Blitz Women's champion, GM Kateryna Lagno in the second 25'+10" rapid game after she was unable to capitalize on her opportunity in the first tie-break game. Gukesh reaches 2756 Elo, surpasses Vishy Anand as the new India no.1

17-year-old phenom D. Gukesh won two back to back games at the 2nd round of the FIDE World Cup 2023 against GM Misratdin Iskandarov (Elo: 2559). This helped him pump up his rating from 2751 to 2755.9. With this rating Gukesh has reached World no.9, but more importantly has surpassed Vishy Anand in the live ratings to become the new India no.1 Get to know in this article whether Gukesh becomes the first Indian to have broken Vishy's India no.1 record for the first time in 37 years or that feat still has to wait until the 1st of September. D Gukesh defeated GM Misratdin Iskandarov (AZE) to become World no.10. He needs to win the second game to become India no.1. The reigning National champion, GM Karthik Venkataraman held the current World Fischer Random champion, GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA) to a draw. GM Koneru Humpy defeated compatriot WGM Priyanka Nutakki. Among Indians, the other victors were, GM Nihal Sarin, GM R Praggnanandhaa, GM Harika Dronavalli and IM R Vaishali. GM Abhimanyu Puranik and GM Adhiban B lost their respective games against GM Peter Svidler and GM Daniil Dubov. They must win the next game to force tie-breaks. After a perfect 9/9 at the 5th Ayodhana Rating Open 2023, untitled Kartavya Anadkat started as the sixth seed at the 1st SLAN International Tournament in Hyderabad. He continued his epic run to finish the tournament with a massive score of 8.5/9, ahead of four IMs. 6th Top seed of the Tournament Mr. Kartavya Anadkat from Gujarat is the Champion of the Slan First International Open FIDE Rated Chess Tournament 2023. IM Anuj Shrivatri was the first runner-up, while IM Ramanathan Balasubramanian was the second runner-up of the tournament.
