Chennai Grand Masters 2023 R4: Gukesh beats Predke, joins Harikrishna in the lead

D Gukesh scored his first win of the event against Alexandr Predke (SRB) in the fourth round of Chennai Grand Masters 2023. Gukesh joined Pentala Harikrishna in the lead 2.5/4 each. Harikrishna had a well contested draw against Levon Aronian (USA). The two-time World Cup winner elaborated his thoughts on his previous day's reply to chess24 tweet. Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) also scored his first win of the event against Sanan Sjugirov (HUN). Arjun Erigaisi had a well contested draw against Pavel Eljanov (UKR). Syed Anwar Shazuli triumphs at 1st KPK-ABCCC Rapid Rating Open 2023

FM Syed Anwar Shazuli scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 1st KPK-ABCCC Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Four players - IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra, Nirmal L, FM Harshad S and Ram S Krishnan scored 8/9 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively. Nirmal and Harshad also remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹20000, ₹15000 and ₹12000 each respectively. This was Syed's first rating tournament triumph of the year. Chennai Grand Masters 2023 R3: Arjun Erigaisi pulverizes Predke

Arjun Erigaisi scored his first win of the event against Alexandr Predke (SRB) in the third round of Chennai Grand Masters 2023. After losing the first round against Harikrishna, Arjun was virtually in a must-win situation to stay in the championship hunt and keep his chances in the FIDE Circuit. Alexandr Predke (SRB) made a positional mistake which allowed his opponent to force the queen exchange. Arjun made the most out of his opportunity to trail the leaders - Sanan Sjugirov (HUN) and Harikrishna by a half point at 1.5/3 each along with Levon Aronian (USA), Pavel Eljanov (UKR) and D Gukesh. A mutual blunder between Harikrishna and Eljanov allowed the former to salvage a half point via perpetual check. Gukesh had a relatively calm draw against Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI). David Gochelashvili wins 9th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit 2023

IM David Gochelashvili scored an unbeaten 6.5/9 to win 9th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. GM Alexei Fedorov and GM Evgeniy Podolchenko scored 6/9 each. They were placed second and third according to tie-breaks respectively. FM Karthik Rajaa is the highest finisher among Indians. Vishy Anand inaugurated Chennai Grand Masters 2023 by making the first move on D Gukesh and Arjun Erigaisi's board. They had a relatively calm draw. Alexandr Predke (SRB) had good chances against Pentala Harikrishna. However, he blundered away his advantage. The endgame expert, Harikrishna does not miss these chances to secure a half point. Pavel Eljanov (UKR) made an incorrect offer of queen trades which resulted in him losing an exchange. The already difficult endgame turned worse for him and his opponent Sanan Sjugirov (HUN) scored his first-ever Classical win over his opponent. Gran Hotel Bali 2023: Mitrabha Guha clinches Blitz Nocturno, third in Open A, Sham R wins Aficionados B

GM Mitrabha Guha scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win XIV Gran Hotel Bali Blitz Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. FM Xulio Del Prado Rodriguez (ESP), GM Rustam Khusnutdinov (KAZ), FM Felix-Antonio Illinca (ROU) and Francisco Javier Barranco Cara (ESP) scored 7/8 each. They were placed second to fifth place respectively. This was Mitrabha's ninth tournament triumph of the year. GM Karen Grigoryan (ARM) won the Open A event scoring 8/9 and remained undefeated. Seven players scored 7/9 each. Out of them, GM Evgeny Zanan (ISR) and Mitrabha secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. Sham R won the Aficionados B (Below 2000) tournament. The Chess-Tech Startup CircleChess recently organized an Online “Bullet Bash” chess tournament on Lichess.org. The event gained attention due to its substantial total prize fund of 1 lakh INR, perhaps the largest ever for an online bullet tournament in India. Chennai Grand Masters 2023 R1: Harikrishna and Eljanov strike

Chennai Grand Masters 2023 is off to a splendid start. Just when it seemed like the first round will end up being victorless, Pentala Harikrishna and Pavel Eljanov (UKR) proved those predictions wrong. Arjun Erigaisi made a significant mistake early in the game. It made him defend the better part of the battle. Eventually he missed his final opportunity to salvage a half point which cost him the game. Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) made a huge blunder in a rook and two pawns endgame which was seemingly heading towards a draw. The other two games between Levon Aronian (USA) and D Gukesh, and Sanan Sjugirov (HUN) and Alexandr Predke (SRB). Round 2 starts tomorrow at 3 p.m. IST. Vidit Gujrathi clinches 9th Gashimov Memorial 2023 after an exciting chase, Arjun Erigaisi second

Vidit Gujrathi is on a roll. After winning FIDE Grand Swiss 2023 and securing a spot in the Candidates 2024, he won the 33rd PSPB Inter Petroleum Individual Rapid 2023. The 9th Vugar Gashimov Memorial 2023 is his third consecutive individual tournament triumph. Despite not finishing first in either Rapid or Blitz, Vidit managed to win the entire event. That speaks volumes about the strength of the tournament. He scored 22/36, 10/18 in Rapid and 12/18 in Blitz, finishing a half point ahead of Arjun Erigaisi 21.5/36. Fujairah Chess & Culture Club set to organise the 5th Fujairah Endurance Chess Solving Championship with a whopping prize fund of 35,500$

On the 20th and 21st of January 2024, the Fujairah Chess and Culture Club in Fujairah City, UAE, is organising the 5th Endurance Blitz tournament and the 20th International Solving Contest, respectively. Together named the Fujairah Endurance Chess Solving Championship, the two-day meet has instituted a mammoth prize pool of 35,500 US dollars, more than half of which will go to the winners of its latter event, setting an unprecedented benchmark in the history of chess-solving competitions. The average rating of the tournament is 2711. Arjun Erigaisi and D Gukesh will be battling against Parham Maghsoodloo (IRI) for an improvement in the FIDE Circuit. They will also face Levon Aronian (USA), Sanan Sjugirov (HUN), Pentala Harikrishna, Pavel Eljanov (UKR) and Alexandr Predke (SRB). Khelo Chess India Grand Finale - Angela wins Rapid, Saurabh Blitz

The Annual finale of the Khelo Chess India tournament organized by ChessBase India, "Sage Sports Academy Rapid and Blitz took place this Sunday! The Rapid Chess tournament was won by WIM Angela Franco from Colombia, and Saurabh Choubey from Madhya Pradesh bagged the Blitz Chess tournament. This event was organized on 10th December at the Sage International School, Kolar, Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh. The Khelo Chess India tournaments, which started in January 2023, have completed 23 events so far. A total prize fund of Rs 61,000 was kept in this competition, of which Rs 50,000 was kept for the rapid tournament and Rs 11,000 was kept for the blitz tournament. Vikramaditya Kulkarni dominates 8th Kurukshetra Rating Open 2023

IM Vikramaditya Kulkarni scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 8th Kurukshetra Rating Open 2023. He finished a staggering one and a half points ahead of the field. Six players - Dangmei Bosco, Silkam Sangma, Soram Rahul Singh, Cheniram Pegu, Neelabh Jyoti Borthakur and Abhash Roimya Saikia scored 7/9 each. They were placed second and seventh respectively. Abhash was the youngest finisher among the top ten.  The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹359500. The top three prizes were ₹40000, ₹30000 and ₹22000 along with a trophy each respectively. From 15th to 21st of December the first ever super tournament of the country is going to be held in Chennai India.
