IM FT Harikrishnan A Ra scored 8.5/9 to win D A V Krida Kendram Blitz Rating Open 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the field. FM Ayushh Ravikumar and Vignesh B edged past three more players on tie-breaks to secure second and third place respectively, scoring 8/9 each. Both of them suffered their sole loss against the eventual champion, Harikrishnan. The top seed scored 8/8 and was a full point ahead of the rest heading into the final round. The total prize fund for the tournament was ₹100000. The top three prizes were ₹15000, ₹13000 and ₹11000 each. Ajay Karthikeyan wins D A V Krida Kendram Rapid Rating Open 2023

One less than a dozen players scored 8/9 at D A V Krida Kendram Rapid Rating Open 2023. They were - IM Ajay Karthikeyan, FM Karthik Rajaa, IM Aswath S, GM Laxman R R, IM Sai Agni Jeevitesh J, Sailesh R, FM Prasannaa S, Aakash G, Jinan Jomon, Sarveshwaran V and Vignesh B. Ajay, Karthik and Aswath were placed first, second and third respectively according to tie-breaks. Out of the eleven players, only three - Ajay, Karthik and GM Laxman remained undefeated. The total prize fund for the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 each. This was Ajay's fifth tournament triumph of the year. Photos: Vinoth Kumar

The year 2023 ends with two consecutive GM tournaments in Tamil Nadu. It is the only state to have consecutive GM tournaments in India. Velammal Hospital presents Madurai Chess Thiruvizha (Festival) Athens of the East 3rd GM Open tournament from 23rd to 30th December 2023. The total cash prize fund is ₹40 lacs + trophies, bicycle and bikes are there. Category A has a total prize fund of ₹2000000, the top three prizes being ₹300000, ₹200000 and ₹150000 along with a trophy each. Category B and C have a total prize fund ₹1000000 each. The 14th Chennai GM Open will take place from 31st December to 7th January 2024. It offers a total prize fund ₹2000000. Satendra Singh wins 1st The Rooky International Open 2023 Challenger

Satendra Singh and Wanawee Buranasing (THA) scored an unbeaten 6/7 each at 1st The Rooky International Open 2023 Challenger. Satendra won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Wanawee was placed second. Their fifth round battle against each other ended in a draw.Maksim M Smirnov and Sivakorn Sinpolai (THA) scored 5.5/7 each. They secured third and fourth place respectively. Satendra defeated Smirnov in the third round. The top three prizes in the Challengers section were THB 2000, 1500 and 1000 along with a trophy each. FM Garv Gaur and FM Aaryan Varshney scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 each at 1st AFCA Rapid Rating Open 2023. Garv won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Aaryan was adjudged second. Four players - Arun Rathee, CM Aaditya Dhingra, Daksh Goyal and WFM Shubhi Gupta scored 8/9 each. They were placed third to sixth respectively. Both Garv and Aaryan won eight games in-a-row to become the coleaders 8/8. They drew their final round game against each other. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Championships 2023 to take place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan

FIDE World Rapid and Blitz championship 2023 will take place from 26th to 30th December in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. More details is slated to be revealed by 15th November. One can expect the eligibility criteria, tournament regulations and total prize fund will be mentioned there. GM Magnus Carlsen (NOR), GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) and IM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ) are the defending champions. They would definitely like to defend their titles. Rahul Gurung wins 21st Northeast Rating Championship 2023

Rahul Gurung, Soram Rahul Singh and Mrinmoy Rajkhowa scored 8/9 each at 21st Northeast Rating Chess Championship 2023. Rahul won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Soram and Mrinmoy secured second and third place respectively. All three of them remained undefeated. Only Mrinmoy was the closest to beat the eventual champion, Rahul in the penultimate eighth round. However, he decided to repeat moves and make a draw in a completely winning rook endgame. The total prize fund was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹70000 and ₹50000 along with a trophy and certificate each. Arjun Adireddy dominates 3rd Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed 2023 with a 2709 performance, Harsh second

CM Arjun Adireddy scored a mammoth 8.5/9 to win 3rd Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2023. He remained undefeated, performed at 2709, increased his Elo rating by 212.4 points and finished a full point ahead of the competition. FM Harsh Suresh scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to finish second. Both Arjun and Harsh scored an IM-norm each. Arjun fulfilled his norm criteria in eight games. This is Harsh's second IM-norm. He finished two points ahead of the second runner-up. 36th National Under 9 Open and Girls Round 8-9: Advik and Samhita take sole lead

Going into the penultimate 10th round of the National Under-9 Championships, the leader situation is clarified both in the Open and Girls section. In the open section, Advik Amit Agrawal (1378, MAH) was held to his first draw of the tournament by Rahul Ramakrishnan (1531, PUD). Nevertheless, he has a full-point lead over the field with 8.5/9 points. In the Girls category, Samhita Pungavanam (1345, TEL) took back the sole lead with a powerful win over Dishita Dey (1263, JHA). Mandar Pradip Lad scored sole 8/9. His only loss was against the eventual champion Paarth in the seventh round. Four players - Aayush Shirodkar, Aryan Shamrao Raikar, Chaintany V Gaonkar and Mayuresh Laxlabh Desai scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third to sixth each. Victory for Valiant Vidit Gujrathi and R Vaishali at FIDE Grand Swiss 2023, Qualify to the Candidates 2024

GM Vidit Gujrathi scored an emphatic victory against GM Alexandr Predke (SRB) to win FIDE Grand Swiss 2023. He became a clear champion scoring 8.5/11. Apart from staging an epic comeback after losing the first round, his countrymate GM Arjun Erigaisi's draw against GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA) and his good friend GM Anish Giri's (NED) win over GM Andrey Esipenko played a key role in Vidit winning the tournament. IM Vaishali R drew her final round game against IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul to become FIDE Grand Swiss 2023 winner. GM Pia Cramling (SWE) holding GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) to a draw ensured Vaishali becomes the champion without the necessity of tie-breaks. Vidit, Nakamura and Vaishali have secured their place in the Candidates via this event. GM Nikita Petrov (MNE) and GM Sayantan Das scored an unbeaten 7/9 each at 1st Annemasse International Chess Festival 2023. Nikita won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Sayantan secured second place. Their seventh round game against each other ended in a draw. Nine players scored 6.5/9. Out of them, five are Indians.
