Bristy Mukherjee dominates West Bengal State Women's Rating 2024

The reigning Purba Bardhaman district champion, WFM Bristy Mukherjee scored an unbeaten 7.5/8 to win Lake Youth Club presents West Bengal State Women's Rating 2024. She finished a half point ahead of the field. Rajanya Datta (North 24 Parganas) scored 7/8 to secure second place. She also remained undefeated. Dakhsha Rudra (North 24 Parganas) finished third scoring 6.5/8. Her sole loss was against the eventual runner-up, Rajanya. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹90000. The top three prizes were ₹20000 + trophy, ₹15000 and ₹10000 each respectively. The four-day eight-round rating tournament was organized by Kolkata District Chess Association from 1st to 4th August at Sahid Smriti Sangha in Kolkata, West Bengal. Dinesh Rajan M clinches 30th Abu Dhabi Chess Festival Open A Below 2300 Rating 2024, Mandar Lad second

Dinesh Rajan M scored sole 8/9 to win 30th Abu Dhabi Chess Festival Open A (<2300) Rating Tournament 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. Mandar Pradip Lad and Iliya Darini (IRI) scored 7.5/9 each. Mandar finished second on tie-breaks, Iliya third. Pushkar Dere is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 7/9 to secure fifth place. Dinesh suffered his sole loss in the second round against Aniket Bapat. He won the next seven games in-a-row to become a clear champion. Total prize fund was US$ 10050. The top three prizes were US$ 3000 + trophy, $2000 and $1500 each respectively. Last year, Dinesh won the B group (<2000) scoring the exact same points. Sriiyukthaa Abirami and Aarav Dengla clinch Gold, Silver and Bronze at World Schools Rapid and Blitz 2024

Sriiyukthaa Marksim Karki Abirami scored 7.5/9 to win Gold at FIDE World Schools Rapid Under-9 Girls 2024. She finished a half point ahead of the field. After suffering her sole loss against the eventual Bronze winner, Mumtozbegim Sobirova (UZB) in Round 6, Sriiyukthaa bounced back by winning the next three games. Sriiyukthaa also won a Bronze medal in the Blitz event scoring 7/9. She finished a full point behind the Gold medal winner, Husnorakhon Khusnitdinova (UZB). Saptorshi Gupta dominates Summit Rookies August Rapid Rating Open 2024 with a perfect score

Saptorshi Gupta scored a perfect 6/6 to win Summit Rookies August Rapid Rating Open 2024. The PhD researcher finished a staggering 1.5 points ahead of the competition. Four players - Ziyi Huang (CHN), Yao Zen Markis Tew (NZL), Junqing Jerome Tao (NZL) and Xxavier Willoughby-Ansell (NZL) scored 4.5/6 each. They were placed second to fifth respectively. Saptorshi defeated both podium finishers. The top three prizes were NZ$120, $80 and $40 along with a medal each. The one-day six-round tournament was organized by Summit Chess Club at Alexandra Park, Epsom in Auckland, New Zealand on 4th August 2024. This was Saptorshi's third tournament he played and first triumph in New Zealand.

The World Junior and World Women Championships for the Blind 2024 are in need of funds

AICFB is set to organize another major event for the blind and visually impaired chess players. The 12th IBCA World Junior and Woman Chess Championship will be held from 27th September – 07 October 2024. This prestigious event will be held in the Chancery Pavilion Hotel in Bangalore where the audience will witness past world champions, international masters, and FIDE-rated players in action. However, these events are currently lacking sponsors and the AICFB is seeking support from individuals, organizations, and the entire chess community to organize this historic event. Phenomenal Firouzja is the Sinquefield Cup champion for the second time in his career

Alireza Firouzja (FRA) drew his final round game against R Praggnanandhaa to win Sinquefield Cup 2024. He had already won the Grand Chess Tour 2024 season in the previous round. Two years ago in 2022, the World no.9 won the same - Sinquefield Cup and the entire GCT. At the age of 21, he has already won Sinquefield Cup and Grand Chess Tour twice which is phenomenal. He is now World no.5 in the live ratings. Fabiano Caruana (USA) defeated Anish Giri (NED) to finish second in the tournament and the tour also. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) won against Ian Nepomniachtchi to share third place with Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) who defeated Ding Liren (CHN). Senthil Maran K becomes the latest International Master of India

FM Senthil Maran K became the latest International Master of India. The 25-year-old crossed the 2400 and earned his final IM-norm at the same event - Slovakia Open Piestany 2024. The Chennai lad got a published rating of 2411 in the August FIDE Rating list. The first IM-norm was scored at 26th Abu Dhabi Masters 2019 in UAE. Almost four years later, he secured his second IM-norm at 96th Paris IdF Masters 2023. Exactly a year later he earned his final IM-norm with a round to spare on 16th July in Slovakia. Iniyan clinches Latvian Chess Federation and FIDE 100-Year Anniversary Blitz Open 2024, Ilamparthi third

GM Pa Iniyan scored 10/11 to become a clear champion at Latvian Chess Federation & FIDE 100-Year Anniversary Blitz Tournament 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Jakob Leon Pajekon (GER) scored sole 9.5/11 to secure second place. IM Ilamparthi A R finished third scoring 9/11. Ilamparthi was the only player to beat Iniyan in the ninth round. The total prize fund for the Blitz event was €1200. The first prize was €170 and a trophy. FM Niranjan Navalgund earned his final IM-norm in the GM Open A tournament with a fantastic performance. Karthik Venkataraman conquers 61st National Championship 2024

GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly (PSPB) and IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) drew with IM Himal Gusain (RSPB) and GM Lalit Rohit (RSPB) respectively in the last round. It created a window of opportunity for GM Karthik Venkataraman (AP) to win the tournament. He defeated the reigning Commonwealth champion, GM Mitrabha Guha (RSPB) to become the champion. Surya finished second on tie-breaks. IM Neelash Saha (RSPB) scored a comfortable win over IM Sammed Shete (MAH) to finish third. The top three finishers scored 9/11 each. Sinquefield Cup R8: Alireza Firouzja wins Grand Chess Tour 2024 with a round to spare

All five games of the penultimate round at Grand Chess Tour Sinquefield Cup 2024 ended in draws. Thus Alireza Firouzja (FRA) won the 2024 season of Grand Chess Tour with a round to spare. He still has a full point lead 5.5/8, going into the final round. Only Fabiano Caruana (USA) has a mathematical chance of catching him. Firouzja had the longest draw of the round when three out of the five games were drawn in 28 moves or less. Firouzja will face Praggnanandhaa in the last round. Avirat Chauhan wins 1st Uin Sports Rating Open 2024

9-year-old Avirat Chauhan and Shriraj Bhosale scored 7.5/9 each at 1st Uin Sports Rating Open 2024. The former National Under-8 Open champion, remained undefeated and won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Shriraj secured second place. Six players scored 7/9 each. Out of them, Sourabh Mhamane was adjudged third. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹601000. The top three prizes were ₹71000, ₹50000 and ₹30000 along with a trophy each. The six-day nine-round tournament was organized by Uinsports India Pvt. Ltd.  at MIT Academy of Engineering in Pune, Maharashtra from 30th July to 4th August 2024. This was Avirat's first tournament triumph of the year.

Meet the 'Deo' who donated books to the Temple of Chess

On the 15th of August 2024, as Indians celebrated Independence Day, another celebration quietly took place in Mumbai. While one group was busy hoisting the National Flag, the other group was busy cutting the ribbon to launch a special place. GM Vidit Gujrathi inaugurated the ‘Temple of Chess’, a new concept by ChessBase India for all chess lovers. The main attraction of this place is the vast collection of books. A very kind and generous person named Deodatta Modak from Nashik donated thousands of books to this temple. ChessBase India's Rasika Ratnaparkhi traveled to the home of Deodatta Modak and had the privilege of speaking with him about his chess journey, book collection, and his views on the Temple of Chess. It cost him two pawns and made things worse. Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) scored his first win of the event against Wesley So (USA). So also lost his game similarly when he dropped one pawn too many. It cost him the game. Fabiano Caruana (USA) missed an opportunity to push for a win against D Gukesh. Praggnanandhaa made a quick 19-move draw against Ian Nepomniachtchi. 61st National Championship R10: Neelash Saha outplays Sethuraman

GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly (PSPB) was held to a draw by IM Aronyak Ghosh (RSPB) in the penultimate round of 61st National Championship. IM Neelash Saha (RSPB) outplayed GM Sethuraman S P (PSPB) after the latter made a mistake in the endgame. Thus, dashing Sethuraman's hopes of retaining the crown. IM Himal Gusain (RSPB) defeated Utkal Ranjan Sahoo (ODI) by playing some attacking chess. He will pose the final challenge to Surya who is aiming for his seventh National title. GM Karthik Venkataraman (AP) defeated IM Ajay Karthikeyan (TN). GM Lalit Rohit (PSPB) made a short work of IM Nitin S (RSPB) in just 21 moves. Final Round 11 starts today at 10:30 a.m. IST.
