Leon Luke Mendonca wins Spring Chess Classic 2024

GM Leon Luke Mendonca defeated GM Christopher Woojin Yoo (USA) in the final round to win Spring Chess Classic 2024 A. GM Abhimanyu Mishra (USA), Leon and GM Mikhail Antipov were the three leaders 5/8. Leon was in a must-win situation and he needed the remaining two results to go in his favor. That is exactly what happened as both Abhimanyu and Antipov drew their respective final round games. GM Samvel Ter-Sahakyan (ARM) and Abhimanyu scored 5.5/9 each to finish second and third respectively. GM Aryan Chopra was the only other Indian in Group A. He scored 4.5/9 to finish fifth. GM Harshit Raja scored 5.5/9 to finish as the runner-up in Group B. This is Leon's second triumph in 2024 after he won Tata Steel Challengers 2024 early this year. Aronyak Ghosh dominates 3rd Matrix Cup Rating Open 2024

The highest rated IM of India - Aronyak Ghosh scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 3rd Matrix Cup Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. IM Neelash Saha and Shreyash Singh scored 8/9 each. The defending champion, Neelash secured second place, Shreyash third according to tie-breaks. Aronyak defeated the eventual second runner-up Shreyash and drew with the runner-up Neelash. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹851000. The top three prizes were ₹101000, ₹75000 and ₹50000 along with a trophy each respectively. This is Aronyak's second consecutive tournament triumph of the year. 21st BCC Open 2024 R5-6: Ritviz Parab and Harsh Suresh in the chase

15-year-old Qinfeng Cao (CHN), IM Arystanbek Urazayev (KAZ) and GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR) are the three leaders at 21st BCC Open 2024. They all have scored 5.5/6. Six players including two Indians - IM Ritviz Parab and IM Harsh Suresh are at 5/6 each. GM Timur Gareyev won the Blitz Final scoring 11.5/15. GM Pranesh M also scored the same. However, his first round loss against Gareyev cost him the championship. Vitaliy finished third 10/15. Women's Candidates 2024 R12: Vaishali scores a hat-trick of wins after losing four in-a-row

GM Vaishali scored a hat-trick of wins after suffering four losses in-a-row at FIDE Women's Candidates 2024. Vaishali defeated GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) in Round 12. The former World Rapid and Blitz Women's champion sacrificed an exchange. After getting a slight compensation, she could not find a way to maintain it. Eventually, Vaishali managed to turn things around and win the game. Tournament sole leader GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) survived a big scare against IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL). She escaped with a draw to stay at the top 8/12. GM Tingjie Lei (CHN) missed a great opportunity against GM Kateryna Lagno. She is still trailing by a half point at 7.5/12. Candidates 2024 R12: Gukesh and Nakamura catch-up with Nepomniachtchi, make it a three-way lead

FIDE Candidates 2024 is closing in to the final stage. D Gukesh was in a virtually must-win situation against Nijat Abasov (AZE) to get back at the top of standings. The teenager managed to achieve that. He outplayed Abasov to win against him for the second time at this event. R Praggnanandhaa drew against Ian Nepomniachtchi in a well contested battle. Hikaru Nakamura (USA) scored a hat-trick of wins as he beat Alireza Firouzja (FRA). He joined the lead with Gukesh and Nepomniachtchi at 7.5/12 each. Vidit Gujrathi self-destructed against Fabiano Caruana (USA). Caruana continues his chase at 7/12. Today is the last rest day. Round 13 starts tomorrow Saturday at 2:30 p.m. local time, 12 a.m. IST. Harshad wins 5th ICA Rapid Rating Open 2024

FM Harshad S and IM Srihari L R scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at 5th ICA Rapid Rating Open 2024. Harshad won the tournament due to better tie-breaks, Srihari secured second place. Ten players scored 7.5/9 each. Out of them, WGM Rakshitta Ravi was placed third. She also remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹51000, ₹41000 and ₹31000 along with a trophy each respectively. The one-day nine round Rapid Rating Open tournament was organized by Innovators Chess Academy at Silicon City Academy of Secondary Education in Bengaluru, Karnataka on 6th April 2024. Women's Candidates 2024 R11: Vaishali dashes Goryachkina's hopes

GM Vaishali R won her second game in-a-row in Round 11 of FIDE Women's Candidates 2024. Vaishali's third win of the event was against GM Aleksandra Goryachkina. The FIDE Women's World Cup 2023 winner lost her second consecutive game by blundering in the endgame. Although Vaishali gained a significant positional advantage in the middlegame. She allowed her opponent to get back in the game by misplaying a little. GM Koneru Humpy scored her second win of the tournament. This time it was against IM Nurgul Salimova (BUL). GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) defeated GM Kateryna Lagno to regain her sole lead. GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) missed a difficult win against GM Tingjie Lei (CHN). Candidates 2024 R11: Gukesh holds World no.2 Fabiano Caruana again, stays in the hunt

D Gukesh drew with Fabiano Caruana (USA) in Round 11 of FIDE Candidates 2024. It was another hard-fought battle which ended up arriving into a queen endgame. Unlike their first encounter, the queen endgame did not last long as Caruana was forced to go for perpetual checks. Vidit Gujrathi suffered a heartbreak as he missed a winning opportunity against Ian Nepomniachtchi. Although Vidit lost both of his game against Nepomniachtchi, he is the only player who was closest to ending Nepomniachtchi's unbeaten streak. Italy's strongest tournament - Sardinia World Chess Festival 2024 is just 10 days away

Sardinia World Chess Festival 2024 is just ten days. The inaugural edition of this festival is offering a total prize fund of €50100. The top three prizes are €10000, €6000 and €4000 each. It is slated to be the strongest tournament ever in Italy. A total of 286 players combining three categories - Open A, Open B and Open C have registered so far. Open A will witness the participation of 163 players including 21 GMs, 32 IMs, 2 WGMs and 6 IMs from 30 countries across the world. GM Vladimir Fedoseev (SLO) is the top seed as of this writing. GM Bharath Subramaniyam H will lead the Indian charge. The tournament is organized by UniChess (FIDE Academy tier 1-2) along with Emmedi Sport ASD. Check out the article for all information. Augustin A scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Anatoly Karpov Legacy Rating Open 2024. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Nanda Kumar T S and Ahaz E U scored 8/9 each. They secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. Nanda also remained undefeated. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹500000. The top three prizes were ₹60000, ₹45000 and ₹35000 along with a trophy each respectively. Four players are at a perfect score 4/4 at the conclusion of Round 4 at 21st BCC Open 2024. They are - Qingfeng Cao (CHN), FM Pham Tran Gia Phuc (VIE), CM Dinh Nho Kiet (VIE) and FM Alexander Chernyavsky. Subhayan Kundu scored a huge upset in the third round against GM Xiongjian Peng (CHN). He drew his following round game against IM Xinyang Nie (CHN). WIM Mrudul Dehankar defeated IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia (PHI) in Round 4. Hrant Melkumyan does a hat-trick of winning O2C Doeberl Cup 2024, Arghyadip Das third

GM Hrant Melkumyan (ARM) scored an unbeaten 8/9 to win O2C Doeberl Cup Premier 2024. He finished a full point ahead of the rest. This is his third consecutive and overall fourth triumph at this event. His previous wins were in 2019, 2022 and 2023. IM Peng Chen (CHN) and IM Arghyadip Das scored 7/9 each. They secured second and third place respectively. The total prize fund of the tournament was AU $26440, $16200 in Premier. The top three prizes were $5000, $3000 and $1500 each respectively. Apart from Arghyadip, GM Mitrabha Guha and GM Venkatesh M R are two more Indians to make a top ten finish. They scored 6.5/9 each, secured sixth and seventh place respectively. Women's Candidates 2024 R10: Vaishali ends her losing streak by winning a rollercoaster game against Nurgyul

GM Vaishali R ended her losing streak in the tenth round of FIDE Women's Candidates 2024. Vaishali was lost the better part of the endgame against IM Nurgyul Salimova (BUL). However, after a lot of mutual blunders, it was the youngest player in the field, Nurgyul who made the final big mistake. Vaishali's both wins at this event happened against the same opponent. GM Tingjie Lei (CHN) defeated GM Aleksandra Goryachkina to join the lead with GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) 6.5/10. Goryachkina blundered in the endgame which should have ended in a draw. The highly anticipated clash between the leaders - D Gukesh and Ian Nepomniachtchi ended in a solid draw. The tenth round of FIDE Candidates 2024 witnessed two decisive games. Fabiano Caruana (USA) and Hikaru Nakamura (USA) won their respective games against Alireza Firouzja (FRA) and Nijat Abasov (AZE). They both are now trailing the leaders by a half point at 5.5/10 each. The All-Indian clash between R Praggnanandhaa and Vidit Gujrathi ended in a draw. Soram Rahul Singh scored sole 8/10 to secure second place. He also remained undefeated. Four players - Rajdip Das, Snehaal Roy, Subrata Nandy Roy and Elangbam Shashikanta Singh scored 7.5/9 each. They secured third to sixth place according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹24000 and ₹16000 each respectively.
