Saptorshi Gupta clear first at New Zealand Fischer Random Championship 2025

Saptorshi Gupta scored an unbeaten 5.5/6 to win New Zealand Fischer Random Championship 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the rest. FM Felix Xie (NZL) scored 5/6 to finish second overall. However, Felix is declared as the official champion as he is the highest finisher among New Zealand players. CM Kendrick Botong Zhang (NZL) and FM Alphaeus Wei Arn Ang (NZL) scored 4.5/6 each. They shared third place. The total prize fund was NZ$ 2450. The top three prizes were NZ$ 500, 350 and 250. This was Saptorshi's second of the year and overall third triumph in New Zealand. 4th President Cup Masters 2025 R1: Nihal Sarin makes a winning start

The defending champion, GM Nihal Sarin started his defense with a win against GM Frederik Svane (GER) at 4th International President Cup 2025 Masters. Facing the Germany no.4, Nihal made his intentions clear in the middlegame. He went for an attack on the kingside and his opponent on the other flank. The pieces were traded and the German arrived at an unfavorable rook and minor piece endgame. After an incorrect pawn trade offer, the position liquidated into a rook and double knight where Nihal used his pieces beautifully to win the game. The Masters has an average rating of 2625 with an average age of 26. The total prize fund of the tournament was US$ 80000, an increase of $5000 from previous edition. Indian Oil 51st National Women 2025 R2: Divi Bijesh and Dakshita Kumawat score upsets

WCM Divi Bijesh (KER) and Dakshita Kumawat (RAJ) scored two big upsets over FM Sherali Pattnaik (UTT) and WIM Srishti Pandey (MAH) respectively in Round 2 of Indian Oil 51st National Women Championship 2025. Divi used her passed h-pawn beautifully to earn a victory over the fourth seed. Siya Sagar (GUJ) played a well contested draw against the third seed, WGM Priyanka Nutakki (AP). In a battle of WGMs, Kiran Manisha Mohanty (LIC) missed a good opportunity to win against Sarayu Velpula (TEL). Kanishka S (TN) drew against one of the latest WIMs of Kerala - Kalyani Sirin. GM R Praggnanandhaa drew his final round game against one the defending cochampions, GM Ilya Smirin (ISR) at XTX Markets London Chess Classic Open 2025. GM Velimir Ivic (SRB) defeated GM Matthieu Cornette (ENG) and GM Daniel H Fernandez (ENG) lost to GM Ameet K Ghasi (ENG). Thus, Praggnanandhaa, Ivic and Ameet, all three ended up with the same score 7/9. Since this tournament does not have a tie-break system, all three players scoring 7/9, shared the first place. The total prize fund was £33000. The top three prizes were £10000, £5000 and £3000 each. This is Praggnanandhaa's fourth triumph of the year, first in an Open tournament. Arjun Erigaisi defeats Vishy Anand in the Finals to clinch Jerusalem Masters 2025

It would not be an understatement to say that it is every player's dream to battle against Vishy Anand. What better stage to do it than a Final of a tournament? Arjun Erigaisi won a dream final against the one and only, Vishy Anand. Arjun had some chances in the first Rapid game. However, it ended in a draw. The second Rapid game also had the same outcome. Arjun struck in the first 3'+2" Blitz tie-break game. He drew the second one even though he was winning as a draw was enough for him to win the match and Jerusalem Masters 2025 tournament. The top seeds of Indian Oil 51st National Women Championship 2025 had a smooth start. Only WFM Shubhi Gupta (UP) was in real danger against Charudharshini R (TN). FM Sherali Pattnaik (UTT) scored the fastest win of the round among the top ten seeds. The defending champion, WGM Nandhidhaa P V (TN) had to earn her full point against Pavithra R V (TN). The latter could not find the correct way to hold a draw in the queen vs two rooks endgame. Jerusalem Masters 2025: Vishy Anand and Arjun Erigaisi advance to the Semifinals

Peter Svidler topped the Round-Robin stage scoring an unbeaten 8/11 at Jerusalem Masters 2025. Ian Nepomniachtchi, Vishy Anand and Arjun Erigaisi scored 7.5/11 each. They all advanced to the Knockout stage. Apart from Arjun, the remaining three remained undefeated. The highly anticipated battle between Anand and Arjun ended in a draw. Svidler will face Arjun and Nepomniachtchi will be up against Anand in the Semifinals. Each Knockout stage mini-match will have two Rapid games. In case of a tie, two 3'+2" games will be played. GM R Praggnanandhaa defeated GM David Gavrilescu (ROU) to emerge sole leader at XTX Markets London Chess Classic Open 2025. Praggnanandhaa made the most out of his opportunity when his opponent made an incorrect rook movement while already lacking enough space. Praggnanandhaa broke out of the six leaders' pack to move to 6.5/8. A win in the last round will make him a clear champion whereas a draw might allow the pursuers to catch up. GM Pranav Anand drew against the newly crowned Commonwealth Open 2025 Gold medalist, GM Daniel Howard Fernandez (ENG). GM Iniyan Pa bounced back with a win over IM Marcus R Harvey (ENG). Praggnanandhaa drew the game in 24 moves when the position seemed unfavorable for him. Madhavendra becomes Asian chess champion, earns FIDE Master title

Madhavendra Pratap Sharma from Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh has achieved the biggest success of his chess career so far by winning the Under-12 title at the Asian Chess Championship held in Thailand. With six wins and three draws in nine rounds, Madhavendra scored 7.5 points, secured first place, and claimed the gold medal. A few days earlier, he had also won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Chess Championship in Malaysia. By becoming Asian champion, Madhavendra has now earned the FIDE Master title, and his live rating has reached 2293, making him the youngest player from Madhya Pradesh to become a FIDE Master. Speaking to ChessBase, Madhavendra shared that his goal is to go to Europe and become an International Master, for which he is looking for a sponsor. Arjun Erigaisi returns to World #5, Three Indians still in Top 10

Arjun Erigaisi has returned to World no.5 in the December 2025 FIDE Rating list. He gained 6.4 Elo rating points at FIDE World Cup 2025. R Praggnanandha maintained his place at World no.7, despite losing some rating. World Champion, D Gukesh dropped to World no.10 after his third round exit. There are now only five Indians in Top 30. Pentala Harikrishna gained 3 Elo rating points after his career best performance at a FIDE World Cup. Pranav Venkatesh maintained his rating after having a great World Cup. Among the Women, four are still in Top 20. GM Humpy Koneru moved up to World no.5, despite not playing a rated game in November. GM Divya Deshmukh dropped to World no.12. GM Vignesh N R scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 2nd Warrior Chess Academy Rapid Rating Open 2025. He finished a half point ahead of the field. Half a dozen players - IM Hari Madhavan N B, IM Harsh Suresh, IM Srihari L, IM Ravi Teja S, IM Senthil Maran K and GM Laxman R R scored 8/9 each. They were placed second to seventh respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹25000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. The one-day nine round Rapid Rating Open tournament was organized by Warrior Chess Academy at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on 22nd November 2025. GM R Praggnanandhaa and GM Velimir Ivic (SRB) have emerged coleaders 5/6 at XTX Markets London Chess Classic Open 2025. Praggnanandhaa started the day with a 21-move draw against GM Tamas Fodos Jr. (HUN). Then he defeated IM Eytan Rozen (ISR) to get back in the lead. GM Pranav Anand won his fifth round game against GM Daniil Yuffa (ESP). Pranav showed his calculation skills better than his opponent. However, in Round 6, he misjudged an exchange sacrifice and lost to the new coleader, Ivic. Both Pranav and the reigning National double champion, GM Iniyan Pa are among the group of dozen players trailing the leaders by a half point at 4.5/6 each.
