Mitrabha Guha dominates 1st Birsa Munda Rapid and Blitz Rating Open 2024
Top seed GM Mitrabha Guha scored 8.5/9 and 9/9 to win 1st Birsa Munda Rapid and Blitz Rating Open 2024. In Rapid, Mitrabha finished a half point ahead of the competition, whereas in Blitz, his perfect score put him a full point ahead of the rest. Kumar Gaurav scored sole 8/9 to secure second place. Anustoop Biswas, Sudhir Kumar Sinha and Jagdish Barik scored 7.5/9 each. They were placed third, fourth and fifth respectively. Top three remained undefeated. In Blitz, GM Saptarshi RoyChowdhury, Sudhir and Kumar scored 8/9 each. They secured second to fourth place respectively. The total prize fund was ₹300000, ₹200000 in Rapid and ₹100000 in Blitz. The top three prizes in Rapid were ₹31000, ₹21000 and ₹15000. For Blitz they were, ₹15000, ₹10000 and ₹8000. This was Mitrabha's 16th and 17th tournament triumph of the year.
Top seed delivers top class performance in both events
Reigning Commonwealth Rapid Gold medalist, GM Mitrabha Guha made a blazing start by winning eight games in-a-row in the Rapid event. Four players - Manish Sharma, Anustoop Biswas, Baivab Mishra and Kumar Gaurav were trailing by a full point at 7/8 each. Mitrabha drew with Anustoop to become a clear champion, Anustoop finished third. Kumar defeated Baivab to secure second place. Jharkhand's very own budding talent, 12-year-old Adhiraj Mitra scored 7/9 to finish sixth. He is the youngest top ten finisher in the Rapid event. The boy gained 149.6 Elo rating points.
In Blitz, GM Mitrabha Guha once again faced Anustoop Biswas in the final round with a same score 8/8 for Mitrabha and 7/8 for his opponent. Only color was inverse. Mitrabha defeated Anustoop to become the champion with a 100% score 9/9. Supratim Ghosh lost to GM Saptarshi RoyChowdhury. Adhiraj Mitra suffered defeat against Sudhir Kumar Sinha. Saptarshi secured second place, Sudhir third. 14-year-old Rangeet Majumdar scored 7.5/9 to finish fifth. He became the youngest top ten finisher in the Blitz event.
A total of 294 players including two GMs and an IM took part from various parts of the country in this two-day nine round Rapid Rating Open tournament. It was organized by Seraikela Kharsawan District Chess Association at Hotel Paras Heights in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand on 26th and 27th October 2024. The time control of the event was 15 minutes + 10 seconds increment per move.
