MPL 34th National U-12 R9-10: Goutham and Shreya eye the championships

by Shahid Ahmed - 14/04/2022

Goutham Krishna H (KER) ended Ethan Vaz's (Goa) unbeaten run in the ninth round of MPL 34th National Under-12 Chess Championship 2022. This win allowed him to catch up with Ethan. Top seed Arjun Adireddy (TEL) defeated Ethan, handing him his second consecutive loss of the day. Goutham drew with Mrinmoy Rajkhowa (ASM) to take sole lead 8.5/10. In the Girls event, top seed Shubhi Gupta (UP) defeated Prishita Gupta (DEL) before losing to Shreya G Hipparagi (MAH) in the penultimate round. Shreya has now taken sole lead 8.5/10. Goutham and Shreya are a win away from winning the tournament, while a draw would leave their fate on others' hands. Round 11 starts today at 10:00 a.m. IST today. Photo: Saishyam Srikanth

Tough day for Ethan

Six players in the Open and three in the Girls event are ready to catch up with the leaders at 8.0/10 each.

Open Round 9: Goutham - Ethan: 1-0

Ethan Vaz (Goa, 1772) suffered his first loss of the event against Goutham Krishna H (KER, 1609).

Position after 30...Bb4

Aron Nimzowitsch said, “The passed Pawn is a criminal, who should be kept under lock and key. Mild measures, such as police surveillance, are not sufficient”. Black needed to put more effort into preventing the passed a-pawn from rolling easily down the board. 30...Bb4 is first of the few mistakes which enabled White to have little to no resistance. 31.Nxb4 Rxb4 32.h3 Rcb7 33.e4 Nd2 34.exd5 cxd5 35.Rd1 Rb2 36.a5 and White promoted the pawn into a queen in the next four moves.

Ajay - Mrinmoy: 0-1

Mrinmoy Rajkhowa (ASM, 1705) waited patiently for 46 moves before going for a break in the center against Ajay Santhosh Parvathareddy (UP, 1507). Still the resultant same color bishop ending was drawn too. However, the grind eventually paid off.

Position after 83.Bg7

White needed to keep his bishop at d4 and move his king only. 83.Bg7 gave Black the breakthrough which he wanted. Can you find out the winning continuation for Black?

Round 10: Ethan - Arjun: 0-1

Ethan Vaz (Goa, 1772) suffered his second consecutive loss of the day against the top seed of the tournament, Arjun Adireddy (TEL, 1889).

Position after 15.Rb1

White made a few incorrect decisions which landed him with a difficult position. 15.Rb1 Nxe3 16.fxe3 0-0 17.Ne4 Be7 18.Bd3 Bd3 19.Qxd3 Black attacked the center c5. White was unable to take control for the rest of the game.

Round 9 Girls: Prishita - Shubhi: 0-1

Prishita Gupta (DEL, 1417) went wrong in the endgame by overstretching her king. Top seed Shubhi Gupta (UP, 1610) correctly seized her opportunity.

Position after 34.Kf3

Round 10: Shubhi - Shreya: 0-1

Shreya G Hipparagi (MAH, 1552) beat the tournament sole leader, Shubhi Gupta (UP, 1610) to become the new sole leader. The top seed went for an ambitious plan.

Position after 20.Qh3

20.Qh3 was unnecessary as Black can simply take cxd4 right away. Shreya opted for the safer approach 20...Kg7 21.Ne4 and now she took cxd4. It took a while for Black to convert the advantage into a win, however White never got more opportunity than to equalize in the endgame.
