Kolkata 2018 Round 6: Momentary lapse in concentration costs Rozum the full point!

by Sagar Shah - 20/05/2018

Everyone thought he was cruising towards victory. Everyone was sure he would win the game. And then Ivan Rozum moved his king inadvertently to g7 instead of g8 and in a flash he moved from a winning to a completely lost position. That's how cruel the game of chess is! Check out this game in which Ivan plays beautiful chess to outplay GM Adam Tukhaev, only to fall at the final hurdle. Tukhaev is now the sole leader with 5.5/6. He is followed by eight GMs on 5.0/6, which includes two Kolkata lads Sandipan Chanda and Deep Sengupta. Round 6 report from Kolkata.

Rozum blunders in a winning position against Tukhaev

It was one of the biggest blunders made by Ivan Rozum in the tournament. He has shown some really solid chess. However, in a completely winning position against Adam Tukhaev he blundered a full rook and later had to resign the game. Let's have a look at how it happened.

Black just played the move ...a5 and defended his pawn on b4. He is now threatening Rc8 to win the c7 pawn.

The knight on b5 supported the pawn on c7 but once the black king came over to d7 it was going to be curtains for White.

Black's last move was Kh7-g7?? which was a horrible move. Can you see why?

And just like that, from being able to reach 6.0/6, Ivan Rozum was pushed to 5.0/6 and Adam Tukhaev took the pole position with 5.5/6 | Photo: Shahid Ahmed

There was a point where Chanda calculated for nearly 30 minutes. What was he thinking? We ask him after the game!

Ziaur Rahman fought really hard, but towards the end he wasn't able to hold Deep Sengupta:

IM Gukesh was pretty unlucky that he lost a drawn position against Vladimir Burmakin. But full credit to the Russian GM for trying right until the very end! | Photo: Shahid Ahmed
