GM Bui Vinh loves Chess and Vietnam

by Peter Long - 15/05/2024

Vietnam currently has 13 Grandmasters. One of the GMs, Bui Vinh, decided to use his experience, ambition and passion, develop the next generation of young talents. It led to the formation of his academy - The Future Grandmasters Chess Club in Hanoi in 2014. He realized that despite the sport being popular and well supported one, there was a lack of opportunities for his compatriots to gain ratings and earn title norms. Thus, he started his first GM/IM-norm tournaments in 2022. Check out how a Grandmaster attained the FA and subsequently IA title, created not only more norms and titles for players but also for arbiter. Peter Long who is participating IM A group, writes all in this report. Photos: FM FT IA Peter Long

A Passionate and Ambitious GM

After a successful completing his Grandmaster title in Hungary, Bui Vinh returned to his homeland in 2008. From his experience to achieve the GM title, Bui Vinh found a new ambition and passion - to develop the next generation of young Vietnamese talents, and which led to him starting his academy - The Future Grandmaster Chess Club - in Hanoi in 2014. Despite chess being a popular and well supported sport, Bui Vinh recognised there was still a lack of opportunities for players in his country to increase their ratings and to get title norms, and with that he started his first GM/IM tournament in Hanoi in 2022.

The full list:

1. Hanoi GM/IM Tournament from 23rd to 29th May 2022

Initially it was not easy doing this but Bui Vinh persevered, subsequently adding the FA title in 2022 and the IA title in 2023 as he gained experience and expertise. At the same time these events have helped build arbiter capacity in Vietnam, with many getting FA and IA title norms.

Today, with many successful rating increases, title and arbiter norms completed, Bui Vinh is already looking to add an International Open. Of these, no less than 11 players have achieved title norms.

Currently, Bui Vinh is organising back to back rating and title norm tournaments in Ha Long and Hanoi. The Quang Ninh GM/IM/FM tournament is taking place from 13th to 19th May and even oversubscribed and so an additional GM tournament had to be added!

Hanoi will however just be GM/IM

In December 2024, Bui Vinh will organise yet another GM/IM/FM in Hanoi together with the City’s first International Open. When asked of his motivation and success, the modest GM-IA, clearly showed his love for chess and expressed his joy at the many young Vietnam talents breaking through. Bui Vinh especially wanted to acknowledge the great support of the Vietnamese government and various provincial authorities, the Vietnamese Chess Federation, and his many grandmaster colleagues in Vietnam together with many well-wishers internationally who believe in and support what he is doing to develop chess
