Asian Continental 2022 R1: A tough start for the top seeds

by Shahid Ahmed - 27/10/2022

Top seeds GM R Praggnanandhaa and IM Tania Sachdev did not have it easy in the first round. Turkmenistan no.3 IM Saparmyrat Atabayev and WGM-elect WIM Sakshi Chitlange, both gave their respective higher rated opponents zero chance, earned a half point for themselves. Untitled Sanket Chakravarty and double IM-norm holder FM Sharan Rao scored big wins against GM Arjun Kalyan and GM Deep Sengupta. Both games were quite intriguing. In the Women's event, former Asian Continental Women's champion, IM Padmini Rout escaped a tough position against WGM Srija Seshadri. Round 2 starts today at 2:30 p.m. IST. Photo: Shahid Ahmed

Sanket and Sharan score big upsets

Apart from Sanket and Sharan, IM N Krishna Teja defeated GM Sankalp Gupta after the latter miscalculated and blundered a piece. IM Nitin S drew with the Kazakhstan no.1 GM Rinat Jumabayev. IM Moksh Amit Doshi, IM Shahil Dey, FM Sambit Panda, IM Raahul V S and FM Ayush Sharma drew with GM Aryan Chopra, GM Abhimanyu Puranik, IM L M S T De Silva (SRI), GM Karthik Venkataraman and IM Aditya S Samant respectively. In the Women's event, WIM Mrudul Dehankar, WIM Aakanksha Hagawane, WFM Harshini A, WIM Aashna Makhija and WFM Lakshmi C drew with WGM Vantika Agrawal, WGM Nilufar Yakubbaeva (UZB), IM Eesha Karavade, WGM Nandhidhaa P V and WIM Isha Sharma respectively.

Open: Arjun Kalyan - Sanket: 0-1

Sanket Chakravarty (2372) used his two-year-old preparation against GM Arjun Kalyan (2526). He sacrificed his knight on the twelfth move.

Position after 11...0-0

Would you take the knight at d5 ? What transpired is a very complicated game 12.cxd5 cxd5 13.Ng5 d6 14.Qd3 g6 15.a3 Ba5 16.Kd1 e5 17.fxe5 Qxe5. Computer might say the position is equal, but only a human mind can comprehend that it certainly is not.

Position after 31...Qxg2+

It is still not over. White can save the game after 31...Qxg2+. Find out how.

Sharan - Deep: 1-0

FM Sharao Rao (2350) defeated GM Deep Sengupta (2497) in an exciting game.

Position after 22...a4

21...Rh4 needed to followed through with 22...Bxh3 to keep things interesting for Black. Instead, 22...a4 allowed White to force the exchange of queens 23.Qa5 Qxa5 25.Nxa5 and White eventually regained his decisive advantage after a bunch of kingside pawns got exchanged in time trouble.
