30th Abu Dhabi Masters R7: Shamsiddin Vokhidov gains sole lead

GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) defeated GM Pranav V in Round 7 to emerge sole leader at 30th Abu Dhabi Masters 2024. He became the only player to score a win among the leaders pack. Pranav's mistake in the queen and bishop endgame proved to be very costly. GM S L Narayanan defeated GM Siddharth Jagadeesh (SGP) to join GM Leon Luke Mendonca and GM Raunak Sadhwani in the pursuit at 5.5/7 each. They are in eight players group of the pursuers. IM Harikrishnan A Ra defeated Turkiye's youngest GM - Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus. GM Pranav V (2598) needed to a backward move 40.Bd4 Qc1+ 41.Kh2 f6 42.Bxf6 gxf6 43.Qd7+ Kg6 44.Qg4+ would be one of the better ways to continue. Instead, 40.Qf5+?? Kg8 41.Qd7 Qa1+ 42.Kh2 Qe5+ 43.Kg1 e2 44.Qd8+ Kh7 45.Qd3+ f5 and it's over for White. This win allowed GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB, 2643) to gain sole lead 6/7.

The tournament is being organized by Abu Dhabi Chess Club & Mind Games from 15th to 24th August 2024 at Radisson Blu Hotel & Resort in Abu Dhabi Corniche Abu Dhabi, UAE. The nine-round Swiss league tournament has a time control of 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move no.1.
