30th Abu Dhabi Masters R3: Goutham Krishna trounces Nikolas Theodorou

by Shahid Ahmed - 19/08/2024

13-year-old IM-elect FM Goutham Krishna H defeated GM Nikolas Theodorou (GRE) in Round 3 of 30th Abu Dhabi Masters 2024. The Greece no.1 made a minute positional mistake which the teenager had no trouble capitalizing. IM Srihari L R played fantastic chess against the top seed, GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) to share the point. GM Nodirbek Yakubboev (UZB) and GM Volodar Murzin are the only two players at 3/3 each. They are followed by 36 players including 15 Indians at 2.5/3. 17-year-old untitled Kushal R Jani is having a fantastic tournament. He defeated his second IM of the event, Mukhammadzokhid Suyarov (UZB). Round 4 starts today at 5 p.m. local time, 6:30 p.m. IST. Photos: Aditya Sur Roy

Kushal continues his good run

GM-elect IM Rathanvel V S drew with GM Lorenzo Lodici (ITA). Second seeded, GM Aravindh Chithambaram scored his second consecutive win. FM Kashish Manoj Jain, FM Mohamed Anees M, WCM Alserkal Rouda Essa (UAE) and FM Nikhil Dixit defeated GM Pablo Salinas Herrera (CHI), IM Arystanbek Urazayev (KAZ), IM Srihari L and IM Jose Daniel Gemy (BOL) respectively. FM Suyog Wagh, FM Gaurang Bagwe, FM Rohit S, Sriansh Das, Priyanshu Patil, WIM Monnisha G K and FM Ojas Kulkarni held GM Emin Ohanyan (ARM), GM Siddharth Jagadeesh (SGP), IM Vugar Manafov (AZE), IM Aaradhya Garg, IM Oliwia Kiolbasa (POL), IM Junhyeok Lee (KOR) and IM Dushyant Sharma to a draw each respectively.

IM-elect FM Goutham Krishna H scored a sublime victory over Greece no.1 - GM Nikolas Theodorou

Theodorou - Goutham: 0-1

GM Nikolas Theodorou (GRE, 2619) is not in his best form. He barely survived against IM Ameya Audi in the previous round, whereas IM-elect FM Goutam Krishna H (2446) drew with the legend, GM Vasyl Ivanchuk (UKR) in the very same round. So it goes without saying that it was the best time for Goutham to face the Greece no.1.

Position after 33.Qa3?

33.Qa3? is a minute positional mistake. Only a careful calculation will make you realize that. His 13-year-old opponent found the move which should not be very difficult to find. 33...Ne6! forces the rook exchange as both White's rook and g5-bishop are under attack. 34.Rxd6 Qxd6 35.h4 h6 36.Bc1 f4 Black beautifully seized his advantage and converted it into a win.

Srihari L R - Tabatabaei

Position after 18...a6

After 16...e5 IM Srihari L R (2500) opted for a sharp line 17.dxe6 Bxe6 18.Ncb5 a6 19.Nxe6 Qxd1 20.Rxd1 Bxa1 21.Nbc7 Re7 22.Bg5 Rd7 23.Rxa1 fxe6 24.Nxe6 and the game eventually fizzed out into a draw. The highlight of the game is certainly the above mentioned sequence where one mistake by either player could have had a completely different outcome.

IM Srihari L R played top class chess against the top seed GM M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) on the top board

GM Lorenzo Lodici (ITA) - IM Rathanvel V S: 0.5-0.5

Changren - Tarhan

Position after 53...Nc5

GM Changren Dai (CHN, 2532) found the correct move which is the obvious 54.b4! in the above position. IM Adar Tarhan (TUR, 2467) had no choice but to take the b4-pawn axb4 55.Kd2? meandered into a practical draw, although computer misevaluates it to be advantageous for White. Instead of 55.Kd2? White needed to find a computer-like precise continuation to win. Try to find out what it is.

GM Aravindh Chithambaram defeated IM Saidakbar Saydaliev (UZB) after a long battle

FM Suyog Wagh - GM Emin Ohanyan (ARM): 0.5-0.5

FM Gaurang Bagwe (pictured) - GM Siddharth Jagadeesh (SGP): 0.5-0.5

Kushal - Suyarov

Position after 40.Rc3

Kushal R Jani (2106) made a nice rook lift 40.Rc3. Find out his plan. The rook played a key role in White earning a win against IM Mukhammadzokhid Suyarov (UZB, 2477).

Kushal R Jani is playing fantastic as he has already defeated two IMs and drew with a GM

UAE no.1 - GM Salem Saleh scored his first win of the event against IM Roberto Carlos Sanchez Alvarez (PAN)

FM Kashish Manoj Jain outplayed GM Pablo Salinas Herrera (CHI)

14-year-old WCM Alserkal Rouda Essa (UAE) defeated IM Srihari L
