1st Indore International GM Open R7: four people at the top

by Himank Ghosh - 06/04/2023

In a 10-round swiss event, usually a clear leader emerges by around Round 5 or 6. Well, that is not happening at the 1st Indore International GM Open! After completing 7 rounds, a total of 4 players share joint lead with 6/7 - IM Nitish Belurkar, IM Viani Antonio Dcunha, IM Aronyak Ghosh and GM Deepan Chakkravarthy. No less than 9 players are breathing on their neck with 5.5/7! With 3 more rounds to go, the tournament is still wide open, a lot of players have a got a shot for the podium position. The 8th round starts from 2 PM IST today. Photo: Himank Ghosh

More people join the lead

The 7th round of the 1st Indore International GM Open did not find a clear leader. Aronyak,Viani and Nitish stayed in the lead with 6/7, and a new player joined in - GM Deepan Chakkravarthy. Deepan defeated the up-and-coming youngster Uddipan Roy to join the top with 6/7.

Round 5: IM Aronyak Ghosh - GM Deep Sengupta: 0.5-0.5

Round 7: IM Aronyak Ghosh - GM Deep Sengupta| Photo: Himank Ghosh

It was a relatively quiet draw between the two strong players from West Bengal. Deep mentioned after the game that Black had a slight edge towards the end, but he didn't want to risk it.

Position after 30. Ra7

After 30. Ra7, Deep had the opportunity to not repeat moves and continue pushing with 30...Raa6, keeping pressure on the weak c6-pawn. But he decided against it, and repeated moves with 31. Bd3, agreeing to a draw.

GM Boris Savchenko - Utsab Chatterjee: 1-0

GM Boris Savchenko won a very beautiful game against Utsab Chatterjee | Photo: Himank Ghosh

In a very imbalanced game, Boris sacrificed a full Rook for two beautiful central passed pawns. The position was still objectively equal, but practically it's very difficult for Black. A few moves in, Utsab blundered:

29....Rf2 was the losing blunder by Utsab.

You have to give up the Knight on d7, it's just a question of what's the best way to give it away. The only drawing move in the position was 29...Rb8! now, exd7 is met by ...Rxb7! Kxb7 Bxh3, and Black is now fine.

This would've been a draw.

But after 29...Rf2, Boris continued with 30. exd7 Rd8 31. Bb5! Kg8 32. Bc3, and went on to win quite comfortably - the two bishops and central passed pawns were just too much to handle. Definitely one of the best games of the tournament so far!

Harsh Suresh - IM Srihari LR: 1-0

One of the players with a very good chance of getting an IM Norm is Harsh Suresh | Photo: Himank Ghosh

It was a balanced and relatively uneventful game between Harsh and Srihari, until the International Master blundered a simple tactic.

29...Bxh2+ simply blunders a full piece due to 30. Kh1!

Srihari probably imagined that White will continue with Kxh2, and it'll be a draw by perpetual with ...Qg3+ - Qe1+. But 30. Kh1 just leaves two of Black's pieces en prise! Harsh went on to win in a few more moves.
