GM Harshit Raja dominates with 13-3 score in thrilling simul!

The 69th Grandmaster of India, Harshit Raja gave an exciting simultaneous exhibition to 16 players on 18th May 2025. The simul happened at the Phoenix ChessBase India Chess Club right after The Big Chess Inter-School Tournament. Out of the 16 participants, 12 were the top two finishers of each category of the Inter-School tournament while the other four were specially chosen. From the very start, the simul was thrilling to watch. All players gave their best and some even managed to give him a tough fight. In the end, Harshit dominated with an impressive score of 13-3. Humpy and Harika set to face World's Top Women at 5th Cairns Cup

GM Koneru Humpy and GM Harika Dronavalli will face the world's top women at 5th Cairns Cup 2025 starting today. 16th Women's World Champion, GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) is the defending champion. The remaining seven players are - GM Bibisara Assaubayeva (KAZ), GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO), GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR), GM Nino Batsiashvili (GEO), IM Alina Kashlinskaya (POL), IM Carissa Yip (USA) and IM Alice Lee (USA). The ten-player strong round-robin tournament has a total prize fund of US$ 250000, an increase of $50000, 25% of total prize fund. The top three prizes are $60000, $50000 and $40000 each. Avani Acharya Udupi wins Mumbai Chess Masters Rating Open 2025

Avani Acharya Udupi and Mayuresh Parkar scored 7/8 each at Mumbai Chess Masters Rating Open 2025. Avani won the tournament due to better tie-break scores, Mayuresh secured second place. Seven players scored 6.5/8 each. Out of them, Reyaansh Venkat was placed third due to better tie-break scores. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹15000 along with a trophy each. The six-day eight round Rating Open tournament was organized by Mumbai Chess Centre at Russian Centre For Science and Culture in Mumbai, Maharashtra from 10th to 15th May 2025. 21st Delhi GM Open R4: Eleven players at a perfect score

The top two seeds - GM S L Narayanan and GM Diptayan Ghosh won their fourth round game at 21st Delhi GM Open 2025. Narayanan capitalized on his opponent's mistake in the rook and same color bishop endgame. Diptayan had a relatively comfortable win. The National Under-11 Open 2024 champion, CM Madhvendra Pratap Sharma put up a very good fight against GM Deepan Chakkravarthy. Only in a complex position, the 11-year-old could not seize his advantage after his opponent made an error. Bivor Adak held the third seeded, GM Levan Pantsulaia (GEO) to a solid draw. Evan Antonio Telles and Shreyanshi Jain dominate 38th National Under-7 Open and Girls Championship 2025

Evan Antonio Telles (Goa) scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 38th National Under-7 Open Championship 2025. He finished a full point ahead of the rest. Duvesh Milan P (PUD), Ansh Dadhich (MAH) and Vivaan Vardhan Sahu (KAR) scored 7.5/9 each to finish second, third and fourth respectively according to tie-breaks. In the Girls event, Shreyanshi Jain (RAJ) scored a perfect 9/9 to become the champion. She finished a staggering 1.5 points ahead of the rest. Anika K (TN) scored sole 7.5/9 to secure second place. Seven players scored 7/9. Among them, the top seed, Saiaastha Singh (WB) was placed third as she had the best tie-break score. The total prize fund combining Open and Girls section was ₹500000. Arush Chitre wins 1st VNIT Rapid Rating Open 2025

Five players - CM Arush Chitre, IM Aakash Sharadchandra Dalvi, FM Vaibhav Jayant Raut, Siddhant Gawai and Dishank Sachin Baja scored 8/9 at 1st VNIT Rapid Rating Open 2025. Arush won the tournament due to better tie-break scores. The remaining four were placed second to fifth respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹225000. The top three prizes were ₹45000, ₹31000 and ₹20000 along with a trophy each. The one-day nine round Rapid Rating Open tournament was organized by Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology Nagpur and Kalpana Prakash Welfare Foundation at VNIT Nagpur in Nagpur, Maharashtra on 12th May 2025. Arjun Erigaisi has returned to World no.3 in FIDE Rating List June 2025. Although, his games from Norway Chess did not get counted as they concluded in June, still other players movements helped him to regain his no.3 place first time in a published FIDE Rating list since October 2024. R Praggnanandhaa gained 8.6 Elo rating points by winning Superbet Chess Classic 2025. He maintained his World no.7 rank. Seven Indians are still in top 30. GM Nihal Sarin gained 3.4 Elo rating points by winning Silver at Asian Individual Men 2025. GM R Vaishali increased her rating by 6 points to move to World no.14 among Women. 21st Delhi GM Open R2-3: Karthik Venkataraman escapes jaws of defeat against Vyom Malhotra

10-year-old CM Vyom Malhotra had a great opportunity to win against GM Karthik Venkataraman in Round 2 of 21st Delhi GM Open 2025. The talented kid missed his chance as his opponent, the reigning National Champion managed to turn things around and win the game. Rakesh Kumar Nayak held IM Neelash Saha to a draw. In Round 3, the top seed of the tournament, GM S L Narayanan made an incorrect retreat in a winning position. It created an opportunity for his opponent, Arnav Agrawal to force a draw. However, he could not find it and Narayanan won the game. A total of 29 players including five untitled players are currently at 3/3. 16th Dolomiti International Tournament Begins in the Lap of Nature

The 16th Dolomiti International Chess Tournament began on Saturday in Forni di Sopra, located in the Dolomites mountain range, which is renowned as a World Heritage Site in Italy. Forni di Sopra is situated in the upper valley of the Tagliamento River, and the surrounding area is a protected natural region of Italy. This place feels like a paradise for playing chess, where the peaceful surroundings create a perfect setting for the game. In the first round played on the opening day, top-seeded Bulgarian Grandmaster Martin Petrov and second-seeded Indian International Master Himal Gusain succeeded in winning their respective games with ease. The tournament is being held in two categories — Group A for players rated above 1899 and Group B for players rated below 2000. The top seed of the tournament finished a whopping 1.5 points ahead of the rest. 12-year-olds Ramanuj Mishra and Rakshit Shekhar Dwivedi scored 6.5/8 each. They secured second and third place respectively according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. IM Himal Gusain scored a perfect 5/5 to win 1st Città Di San Cataldo Open A (>1750) 2025. He finished 1.5 points ahead of the field. Christian Chieffalo (ITA) and Salvatore Culle (ITA) scored 3.5/5 each to secure second and third place respectively. The total prize fund was €1000. 10-year-old Vairaj Sogerwal scored a huge upset in Round 1 of 21st Delhi GM Open 2025. He defeated the ninth seed, GM Karen Grigoryan (ARM). It was not a smooth conversion for the boy. The series of mistakes in the endgame eventually allowed his opponent to find a way to earn full point. Meetansh Dixit had the opportunity to score the biggest upset of the round. He missed the opportunity to seize his advantage against the third seed, GM Levan Pantsulaia (GEO). The strong Georgian GM managed to escape with a draw when he allowed perpetual checks to finish the game. The 21st edition boasts a total prize fund of ₹12100000, ₹5100000 in Category A. The top three prizes are ₹700000, ₹600000 and ₹500000. Round 2 starts today at 9:30 a.m. IST.

Sahib Singh becomes India’s latest International Master from New Delhi

India has recently got a new International Master, 16-year-old Sahib Singh from Delhi. He scored his final IM norm at the Dubai Open 2025. This path wasn’t easy for him as he missed his norm a few times, a lot of pressure, and financial struggles along the way. But what kept him going was his love for the game and the strong support from his family. Over the years, Sahib has made India proud time and again. One of his stunning performances includes his triple gold finish at the Western Asia Youth Chess Championship in 2022. Aravindh Chithambaram wins 6th Stepan Avagyan Memorial, Praggnanandhaa second

Aravindh Chithambaram defeated Aram Hakobyan (ARM) to become the winner of 6th Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2025. Aravindh made a nice calculation in the queen and double knight endgame, resulting in a crucial pawn gain after his opponent erred. R Praggnanandhaa also ended up scoring the same as Aravindh 6.5/9. However, Aravindh became the champion due to better tie-break scores, Praggnanandhaa had to settle for second place. They finished 1.5 points ahead of the rest.
