Raahul V S is the National Amateur Champion

Raahul V S became the National Amateur Champion after he defeated Ameya Audi in the last round. YVK Chakravarthy drew his game against Omkar Kadav and the two had to be content with the second and third spots respectively. Smaraki Mohanty was the National Women's Amateur Champion. The tournament ended quite a while ago, but we found it important to ensure that the National Champions make it our newspage.

The SBI Life National Amateur 2016 took place from the 5th to the 11th of November in Mumbai. We reported on this event at the end of the ninth round. At that point Raahul V S and Omkar Kadav were leading the tournament wihth 8.0/9.

 

2nd seeded V S Raahul of Tamil Nadu and Smaraki Mohanty of Odisha were crowned as 'Champions' of SBI Life 5th National Amateur Chess Championship 2016, which concluded here at Thakur College of Science & Commerce, Kandivali, Mumbai.

Raahul V S emerged as the National Amateur champion with 9.5/11

In an eventful last round, Raahul defeated top-seeded Ameya Audi of Goa to win the championship with a score of 9.5/11. Raahul was not required to share the trophy as the game between the overnight co-leaders, Chakravarthy and Omkar ended in a draw. YVK Chakravarthy secured 2nd position with a better tie-break while Omkar Kadav finished 3rd. Both scored 9.0/11. Meanwhile, the women's championship was won by Smaraki Mohanty of Odisha with a score of 7.5/11 ahead of Greesham Dhumal who secured 2nd place.

The highest rating gainer of the event Raahil Mullick - 212 Elo points! with the National Amateur women's champion Smaraki Mohanty

Raahul and Smaraki became richer by Rs.21,000/- and Rs.10,000/- and will also get opportunity to represent India in the forthcoming World Amateur Chess Championship at Italy in April 2017.

CM Aditya Mittal, who at one stage appeared to be running with title, had to be content with a fourth place with a score of 8.5/11, while 5-10 places were decided by tie-break as all of them were on 8.0/11.
