World Cadets 2022: Shubhi, Charvi, Ethan and Safin are the medal contenders
Shubhi Gupta has had a fantastic year so far. She won the National Under-12 Girls and National Amateur U-2000 Women Championship, three Silver medals at the Western Asia Under-12 Girls. Last month, the 11-year-old finished third at an Open Rating tournament. So her leading at World Under-12 Girls does not come as a surprise. A win in the last round will earn her a Gold. Charvi A can also win a Gold in the Under-8 Girls. She is currently at 8.5/10, a half point behind the leader. Ethan Vaz 8/10 and Safin Safarullakhan 8/10 are the remaining two Indians in the medal fray in Under-12 and Under-8 Open categories respectively. Final round starts today at 10 a.m. local time, 11:30 a.m. IST. Photo: Sophie Nikoladze
Four hopeful for a medal
Under-12 Girls: Shubhi Gupta 8/10
Shubhi Gupta is currently sharing the lead with Oksana Goriachkina 8/10 in Under-12 Girls. A win in the final round makes her a clear champion and earns her a Gold, whereas a draw would leave things in others' hands.
Kesaria - Shubhi, Round 9
Shubhi Gupta responded pretty well to her opponent's attack on the kingside while launching one of her own on the queenside. 25...Ne6 26.axb4 actually helps Black axb4 27.cxb4 Qa7 28.h6 Nd4 29.Rh2 Ra1 30.hxg7 c3 and it's over for White. While both players might not have handled the position accurately, Black's practical play is what earned her a full point.
Under-8 Girls: Charvi A 8.5/10
Charvi A is trailing the Under-8 Girls leader by a half point 8.5/10. She needs to win the last round. If the tournament leader Sivanandan Bodhana (ENG) 9/10 does not win the last round, then Charvi's Gold chances remain.
Charvi - Alanna, Round 7
19.Nxh6+ is certainly the most obvious here to disintegrate Black's kingside gxh6 20.Qxf6 Re6 21.Qf3. White had no trouble converting her advantage into a full point.
Under-12 Open: Ethan Vaz 8/10
In Under-12 Open, Ethan Vaz is full point behind the leader FM Artem Uskov, against whom Ethan lost his only game at this event. He must win the final round game against CM Suat Nurgaliyev (KAZ) to keep his medal chances.
Lukas - Ethan, Round 8
White king is on the brink of grave danger. It is certainly not easy to defend the position despite being ahead by two pawns. How should White defend it? 39.Qxd3 was played in the game Qb2 40.Qf3 Rh2+ 41.Kg1 Rcc2 42.Ra2 Qxa2 and Black won.
Under-8 Open: Safin Safarullakhan 8/10
Safin Safarullakhan is at 8/10, a full point away from the Under-8 Open leader, Marc Llari (FRA). He must beat Ignaco Buklaho (POL) to stay in the medal contention.
