Charvi Anilkumar and Shubhi Gupta clinch Gold at World Cadets 2022, Bronze for Safin Safarullakhan
Charvi Anilkumar and Shubhi Gupta are the World Champions in Under-8 Girls and Under-12 Girls category respectively. They both have won a Gold medal each for India. Charvi scored 9.5/11 and Shubhi made 8.5/11, both of them edged past other competitors on tie-breaks to etch their name in history. Safin Safarullakhan is the only other Indian to claim a medal. He won the Bronze in Under-8 Open, scoring sole 9/11. India won two more Gold in the same month after Pranav Anand and Ilamparthi won a Gold each in World Youth Under-16 and Under-14 Open respectively, a little over a week ago. Thus, India now has the highest number of Gold medals between the age group of Under-8 and Under-18.
The Golden era of Indian chess continues
Three out of four medal hopefuls won a medal each in their respective category. Currently India has four Gold medalists between the age group of Under-8 and Under-18. Two of them are in Open section - Ilamparthi A R (Under-14), Pranav Anand (Under-16) and the remaining two are now in the Girls section - Charvi A (Under-8) and Shubhi Gupta (Under-12). That's not all. Indian kids won three medals in the World Youth Chess Solving Championship too. Samhita Pungavanam (Gold in Under-8 Girls), Charvi A (Bronze in Under-8 Girls) and Ethan Vaz (Silver in Under-12 Boys).
Under-8 Girls: Charvi A (Gold)
Charvi A (1355) defeated Sofya Rom Kuraeva (KAZ) in the final round to finish with a score of 9.5/11. Bodhana Sivanandan (ENG, 1587) also scored the same. Charvi won Gold due to better tie-breaks.
Under-12 Girls: Shubhi Gupta (Gold)
Shubhi Gupta (1733) drew with Oksana Goriachkina (1748) in the final round to score 8.5/11 along with three more girls - Maedeh Yousefian (IRI, 1765), Oksana and Diana Preobrazhenskaya (1994). Shubhi claimed the Gold due to better tie-breaks and the remaining three were placed second to fourth.
Under-8 Open: Safin Safarullakhan (Bronze)
Safin Safarullakhan (1377) defeated Ignacy Buklaho (POL, 1179) in the final round to score sole 9/11 and win the Bronze medal. Despite being worse for the better part of the game, he managed to perseverse and win in the end.
