Ratnakaran wins Cademic Chess Carnival - 3rd Cademic Blitz Rating Open 2023

by Shahid Ahmed - 19/05/2023

IM Ratnakaran K, Nithin Babu, FM Harsh Suresh and IM Nitin S scored 8/9 each at Cademic Chess Carnival - 3rd Cademic Blitz Rating Open 2023. The 'Indian Tal' won the tournament due to better tie-break score and the remaining three were placed second to fourth respectively. He started with eight consecutive wins, including a victory over the eventual runner-up. Nithin in the penultimate round. A last round loss against IM Nitin did not deter Ratnakaran's championship hopes. All top four finishers lost a game each. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹99999. The top three prizes were ₹10000, ₹9000 and ₹8000 along with a trophy each respectively. The one-day blitz rating tournament was organized by Cademic Chess Center. Photo: Cademic Chess Center

Ratnakaran's first Rating tournament triumph of the year

IM Ratnakaran K had plenty of podium finishes in recent times. He won a few non-rated tournament and 34th All Indian Inter-Railway for Southern Railways team in 2022. The last rating tournament he won was a rapid rating event in June 2018. Ratnakaran headed into the final round with a full point lead over others 8/8. He lost the last round game against his Southern Railway teammate IM Nitin S. However, that did not affect his championship chances as tie-breaks went in his favor. The 34th National Under-12 Open champion, Goutham Krishna H was the youngest player to make a top ten finish. He scored 7.5/9 and was placed sixth. Femil Chelladurai became the sole female player to finish in top ten. She scored 7/9 and was placed ninth.
