Kunal M and Bharath Subramaniyam win GM Chess 1st Rapid and Blitz Rating Open 2023
Kunal M, WGM Srija Seshadri and IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam scored 8/9 each at GM Chess 1st Rapid Rating Open 2023. Kunal won the tournament due to better tie-breaks. Srija and Balasubramaniam were placed second and third. Both Kunal and the eventual second runner-up Balasubramaniam remained undefeated. GM Bharath Subramaniyam H scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win the Blitz Rating Open. He finished a full point ahead of the field. A half dozen players scored 7.5/9. CM Rajarishi Karthi and IM P Saravana Krishnan were adjudged second and third. The total cash prize fund for Rapid and Blitz was ₹200000 and ₹100000 each respectively. Bharath dominates Blitz, Top three score 8/9 in Rapid
Five players were leading 7/8 each, going into the final round of Rapid. CM Rajarishi Karthi and Anshuman K lost to WGM Srija Seshadri and Kunal M respectively. IM Ramnathan Balasubramaniam defeated Arun R U. Thus, Kunal won the Rapid tournament 8/9, Srija second and Balasubramaniam third according to tie-breaks. In the Blitz event, GM Bharath Subramaniyam H made a blazing start 8/8. He was a full point ahead of others heading towards the final round. He drew his last game against Nawin M S to become a clear champion 8.5/9.

A total of 265 players including an IM and a WGM took part from various states across the country in the two-day nine round Rapid Rating Open tournament held on 19th and 20th August 2023. Both events were organized by GM Chess Academy at Alpha International and Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The time control for the Rapid event was 20 minutes + 10 seconds increment. The Blitz Rating event had 273 players including a GM, two IMs and a WGM from various states across the country. It took place on 20th August 2023. The time control for Blitz was 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment.
