Karthikeyan Murali magnificent at Hoogeveen Open 2024 with a 2833 performance, Sankalp Gupta third
Top seed GM Karthikeyan Murali scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Hoogeveen Open 2024. He finished a whopping 1.5 points ahead of the field with a 2833 performance. IM Nico Zwirs (NED) scored sole 7/9 to secure second place. GM Sankalp Gupt and IM Manuel Bosboom (NED) scored 6.5/9 each. Sankalp finished third and Manuel fourth according to tie-breaks. Sankalp was also the only player to draw with the eventual champion, Karthikeyan. The top three prizes were €3000 + trophy, €2000 and €1500. Top seed delivers top class performance
GM Karthikeyan Murali won his first four games, then drew the fifth round game against the eventual second runner-up, GM Sankalp Gupta. Once again he had another four-game winning streak to finish the tournament 1.5 point ahead of the rest. His rating performance became an incredible 2833. Karthikeyan was the sole leader 7.5/8, going into the final round. IM Manuel Bosboom (NED) was the only one trailing by a full point at 6.5/8. A draw was enough for Karthikeyan to become a clear champion. Yet, he still went on to defeat FM Ivo Maris (NED) to become a clear champion. Manuel lost to IM Nico Zwirs (NED), Nico finished second. Sankalp drew with GM Sabino Brunello (ITA) to be placed third. The total participants combining Crown, Open and Amateur tournaments was 222.
IM Eline Roebers (NED) won the Crown group scoring an unbeaten 4.5/6. GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI) secured second place 3.5/6. GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) 2.5/6 third and FM Machteld van Foreest (NED) fourth 1.5/6. It was a double round-robin tournament comprising the previously mentioned four players with the same time control as the Open group.

IM Nico Zwirs' (NED, 2474) best option to salvage a draw was 37...Nxd4 38.Rd6+ Kc7 39.Rxd4 g5 instead he directly played 37...g5 allowing GM Karthikeyan Murali (2624) to save his bishop 38.Rd6+ Kc8 39.Bb6 Kb7 40.a5 and White went on to win the game in the next few moves.
A total of 65 players including five GMs and six IMs took part from 12 countries across the world in the Open section in this eight-day nine round Rating Open tournament. It was organized by Stichting Schaaktoernooi Hoogeveen at Town Hall in Hoogeveen, Netherlands from 27th October to 2nd November 2024. The time control of the event was 40 moves in 90 minutes + 30 minutes + 10 seconds increment per move.
