Freestyle Grand Slam Tour Stage 2 QF1: Arjun misses against Nakamura

by Shahid Ahmed - 10/04/2025

Arjun Erigaisi drew with Hikaru Nakamura (USA) in the first game of Quarterfinals at Freestyle Grand Slam Tour Stage 2. The World no.4 had an opportunity to push for a win. However, he could not seize it. Later, Nakamura had a chance which he also missed. The game eventually ended in a draw. Magnus Carlsen (NOR) scored the sole victory of the day against Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB). It means the World Rapid 2021 champion must win the second game to stay in the tournament. The remaining two Quarterfinals games between Vincent Keymer (GER) and Ian Nepomniachtchi, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (FRA) and Fabiano Caruana (USA) ended in draws. Quarterfinals Game 2 starts today from 1 p.m. local time, 4:30 p.m. IST. Photos: Aditya Sur Roy

Arjun - Nakamura: 0.5-0.5

GM Arjun Erigaisi gained an upper hand against GM Hikaru Nakamura (USA). However, he could not seize his opportunity.

Position after 19...Ne3

White needed to go 20.Nxf6 Qxf6 21.Bxe3 dxe3 22.Qxe3 to gain a substantial advantage. Instead, 20.Rg1 Rxg1+ 21.Qxg1 eventually allowed Black to gain an advantage. However, the game petered out to a draw in the rook endgame.

Carlsen - Abdusattorov

Position after 25...0-0?!

In an already difficult position, Nodirbek Abdusattorov (UZB) made a bold decision of short castle 25...0-0?! which can also be a considered a long castle as the king travelled all the way from the b8 to g8. It did not pay off as his opponent Magnus Carlsen (NOR) utilized the fact that the black king is much more exposed now than before. Abdusattorov did not go down easily but he could only put up so much fight.
