5th Shenzhen Masters 2024 R2: Giri still cannot overcome Dubov

by Shahid Ahmed - 02/03/2024

The second round of 5th Shenzhen Masters 2024 witnessed four decisive results. The previous round winners - Anish Giri (NED) and Arjun Erigaisi lost their games. Giri lost against the former World Rapid champion - Daniil Dubov. The world no.5 has always struggled against Dubov. In a queen, rook and bishop endgame, Giri missed a forced sequence which his opponent spotted and won the game. Arjun made an incorrect decision against Xiangzhi Bu (CHN) at a critical moment which turned things in his opponent's favor. Yangyi Yu (CHN) and Vladislav Artemiev are the two other victors of the round. Round 3 starts today at 2 p.m. local time, 11:30 a.m. IST. Photos: Organizer/Liang Ziming

Dubov - Giri: 1-0

Position after 33...Qe7??

While at a first glance 33...Qe7?? seems harmless, it is actually quite devastating for Black. It starts a series of forcing moves which gives White the full point. Can you find out the winning continuation for White which Dubov executed?

Black is threatening cxb2 and also the d5-knight has done a fork on White's e7-rook and bishop. How to get out of this predicament? 24.Re5?? was not the best way as 24...cxb2 gave Black the decisive advantage and he went on to win the game. Find out what Black should have done instead to keep the game going.

Xiangzhi Bu (CHN) defeated Arjun Erigaisi to join the lead with Dubov and Yangyi 1.5/2
