We have a sweet story to share about one of our recent HelpChess contributors. He is 13-year-old FM Aarav Sarbalia, who donated Rs. 7,000. His father shared the story behind this donation:

Aarav was playing in the 63rd BRDCA Rapid Chess Tournament in Bangalore. While we waited outside, we were watching ChessBase India’s live commentary of the final day of the Olympiad. To cheer Team India for a medal, and to give Aarav one more reason to fight for the podium, we made a small promise. Whatever prize money he won, we would donate to HelpChess, however small it might be.

Aarav won the tournament with 6/7 points! He scored five wins and two draws to finish unbeaten.

The winner's prize money, Rs. 7000, then went straight to HelpChess Foundation! This is so cool! HelpChess supports young players and this time, a young player supported HelpChess! It's like a full-circle moment!

Chess is an expensive sport, and any support that helps players participate in tournaments or receive training can make a difference. Aarav and his parents' gesture is truly commendable. While supporting Aarav's chess journey, they also want to help other players pursue theirs.

As chess parents, our pockets are always stretched thin by the costs of a chess career. But the game has given our family so much, and if we can give back even a little to help chess grow, we're glad to do it.

Aarav scored his maiden IM norm in Munich earlier this year. He is definitely a young talent to watch out for! He also creates interesting chess content, so do check out his YouTube channel and Instagram page! You can also read about his content creation journey here.
