Express Report: Vassily Ivanchuk is the World Rapid Champion

Vassily Ivanchuk is the new World Rapid Champion. He beat Hrant Melkumyan in the last round, scored 11.0/15 and won the title on a superior tiebreak. The silver went to Alexander Grischuk and the bronze to Magnus Carlsen. Vidit Gujrathi performed phenomenally and finished eighth. In the women's section the gold went to Anna Muzychuk, silver to Alexandra Kosteniuk and bronze to Nana Dzagnidze. Express Report.

Live video and games: World Rapid and Blitz 2016

The World Rapid and Blitz Championship will take place from the 26th of December 2016 in Doha, Qatar. It is a five day event with three days dedicated to decide the World Rapid Champion and two days for the World Blitz. Vishy Anand is heading the Indian challenge with strong players like Vidit, Adhiban and Ganguly in the fray. Humpy and Harika will fight for top honours in the women's section. Live games begin each day at 17.30 IST (15.00 Qatar time) and you can follow them here. 

World Rapid 6-10: Endgame guru Vidit outfoxes Wojtaszek and MVL

You know that a young talent is becoming a big boy when he starts beating the big boys! This is exactly whats happening with Vidit Gujrathi. After getting better of Jobava, Artemiev and Akopian on day one, he upped his game and beat Wojtaszek and Vachier-Lagrave! He is on 7.0/10 and so is Vishy Anand. Ivanchuk is leading in the open section with 8.0/10 and Anna Muzychuk is cruising ahead with 7.0/8. We have a detailed report with some excellent photography by Maria Emelianova.

Sauravh Kherdekar wins 2nd RBK International

It was a cliff hanger as Sauravh Kherdekar and Rahul Sangma both won their games to race ahead with 7.5/8 at the 2nd RBK International 2016. In came Rakesh Kulkarni and beat Sangma, which cleared the path for Kherdekar. The experienced Sauravh maintained his calm and with an excellent performance won the event with 9.0/10. Raahul V S is the National Amateur Champion

Raahul V S became the National Amateur Champion after he defeated Ameya Audi in the last round. YVK Chakravarthy drew his game against Omkar Kadav and the two had to be content with the second and third spots respectively. Smaraki Mohanty was the National Women's Amateur Champion. The tournament ended quite a while ago, but we found it important to ensure that the National Champions make it our newspage.

The 2nd edition of the IIFLW is in progress in Mount Litera School, Mumbai from the 26th December 2016 to 3rd January 2017. In the morning you have the IIFLW Juniors (u-13) which begins at 9.30 a.m. and in the evenings we have the Open section that kicks off at 4.00 p.m. Over here you can watch all the games live with features like livebook, engine analysis and much more.

World Rapid 1-5: Vidit on fire, Surya lets Magnus off the hook!

What an exciting day at the World Rapid Championships 2016 in Doha. Surya Shekhar Ganguly missed a mate in three against World Champion Magnus Carlsen. Vishy Anand played solid chess and with two wins and three draws is on the 15th position. The performer of the day was surely Vidit with four wins against the likes of Jobava, Artemiev and Akopian. In the women's section Humpy is on 2.5/4, while Harika is on two. Full report with high class pictures and analysis.

Indians at the London Chess Classic 2016

Strong Indian contingent made their presence felt in the open and the super rapidplay tournament. Faltering at crucial moments made the players miss out on a podium finish. Siddharth Gopakumar witnessed all the action live in London and sent us an illustrated report. The fourth Bhopal Open is being held from the 20th to the 25th of December 2016 at Bansal Institute of Science and Technology. GM Sriram Jha is the top seed followed by IMs Ravi Teja, Anup Deshmukh and Chakravarthy Reddy. The organization of the event is excellent, with a beautiful playing venue and good accommodation facilties for the players. Vidit Gujrathi had a memorable 2016 as he climbed the ladder to almost barge into the 2700 club. The talented grandmaster from Nashik was in Hamburg a couple of months back and recorded some DVDs.
