World Blitz Women 2024: Vaishali dominates the Swiss league, advances to the Quarterfinals

GM R Vaishali won the Swiss league stage of World Blitz Women 2024 convincingly. She decimated the field by scoring an unbeaten 9.5/11 and finished a full point ahead. Her Quarterfinal opponent will be - GM Jiner Zhu (CHN). The newly crowned, two-time World Rapid Women 2024 champion, GM Koneru Humpy was the only other Indian who was closest to make it to the Knockout stage. She scored 8/11, however, Jiner edged past her due to better tie-breaks. In the Open section, ten players scored 9.5/11. They are - Ian Nepomniachtchi, Fabiano Caruana, Magnus Carlsen, Wesley So, Alireza Firouzja, Hans Niemann, Jan-Krzysztof Duda, Volodar Murzin, Daniel Naroditsky and Daniil Dubov. Suyog Wagh wins 2nd JK's ECA One Day Rapid Rating Open 2024

FM Suyog Wagh and GM Mitrabha Guha scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 at 2nd JK's ECA One Day Rapid Rating Open 2024. Suyog won the tournament due to better tie-break scores, Mitrabha was placed second. GM Sriram Jha and Advik Amit Agrawal scored 8/9 each. Sriram was placed third and Advik fourth. The total prize fund was ₹400000. The top three prizes were ₹100000, ₹50000 and ₹25000 along with a trophy each. India bags 11 medals at Asian Amateur 2024

India has won a total of eleven medals at Asian Amateur Chess Championships 2024. Eight Indians won all those eleven medals in various categories. Sananda R won Gold in Under-1700 Women in all three events - Classical, Rapid and Blitz. Ruhani Raj Asudani won Silver in Rapid and Bronze in Blitz. Farhaan M won Gold in Under-1700 Men Classical. Aryan Raj clinched Gold in Under-1700 Men Rapid, Omkar Shelke secured Silver. Maharth Godhani earned Silver in Blitz Under-1700 Men. Smaraki Mohanty got Bronze in Under-2000 Women. Sriiyukthaa Marksim Karki Abirami received Bronze in Under-1700 Women. The total prize fund of the tournament was US$ 25000. The top three prizes in Under-2000 Women, U1700 Men and Women were $1500, $1200 and $1000 along with a trophy and medal each.

4th Athens of the East R1-8: Srihari L R and Nitin in a four-way lead

IM Srihari L R, IM Nitin S, IM Uurtsaikh Agibileg (MGL) and IM Semetei Tologon Tegin (KGZ) are sharing the lead 7.5/8 at 4th Athens of the East GM Tournament 2024. Agibileg drew with Srihari on the top board. Thus allowing two more players to catch up. Nitin defeated IM Raahul V S and Semetei won against GM Duc Hoa Nguyen (VIE) to move to the top. Nithin Babu held the top seed and India's highest rated IM Aronyak Ghosh to a draw. The total cash prize fund in the festival is ₹4400000 + two cars, six bikes and 100 cycles, for Category A (>2000) it is ₹2000000. The top three prizes were ₹300000, ₹200000 and ₹150000 each. Koneru Humpy Golden at World Rapid Women Championship 2024

GM Koneru Humpy convincingly clinched World Rapid 2024 Women championship. She started the day with two draws against the reigning Women's World champion - GM Wenjun Ju (CHN) and World Rapid 2014 champion - GM Kateryna Lagno. In the final round, the Indian legend defeated IM Irene Sukandar (INA) to clinch the championship for the second time in her career. Unlike last time, no tie-breaks were needed and Humpy finished clear first. Despite starting with a loss, Humpy made a strong comeback by scoring 8.5 in the next twelve games to claim the Gold. 18-year-old GM Volodar Murzin became World Rapid 2024 champion scoring an unbeaten 10/13. Ritviz Parab dominates 3rd Durga Motors Rapid Rating Open 2024

IM Ritviz Parab scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 3rd Durga Motors Rapid Rating Open 2024. IM Nitish Belurkar and Mandar Pradip Lad scored 8/9 each. They secured second and third place according to tie-breaks. Ritviz defeated the eventual runner-up, Nitish in the seventh round. The total prize fund was ₹151000. The top three prizes were ₹40000, ₹20000 and ₹12000 along with a trophy each. Dr. Prajwal P Shet and IM Sharan Rao scored an unbeaten 8/9 each at 1st MAHE Bengaluru Rapid Rating Open 2024. Prajwal won the tournament on tie-breaks and Sharan secured second place. The seventh round battle between them ended in a draw. Nine players scored 7.5/9 each. Out of them, FM Ojas Kulkarni was placed third. The total prize fund was ₹400000. Magnus Carlsen (NOR) played three games on the second of World Rapid 2024 before he withdrew. He was on the verge of a loss against GM Daniel Dardha (BEL) in the seventh round. However, the Belgium missed his chance and allowed the World no.1 to salvage a draw for the third time in a lost position at this event. Volodar Murzin, Jan-Krzysztof Duda (POL), Arjun Erigaisi and Alexander Grischuk are the four players in the lead 7/9 each. Arjun defeated Ray Robson (USA) and Shant Sargsyan (ARM), drew with Murzin and Duda. Arjun will face the three-time World Blitz champion, Grischuk in Round 10. Wenjun Ju (CHN), Harika Dronavalli and Koneru Humpy are in a three-way lead 6.5/8. Humpy will start the final day of the event with a clash against Wenjun. Breaking News: Magnus Carlsen withdraws from World Rapid 2024

Magnus Carlsen (NOR) has withdrawn from World Rapid 2024. What caused it? He was asked to change his jeans to a trouser which abides by the dress code policy of this event. It was a matter of principle for him. He refused to do that and withdrawn from the tournament. The World no.1 will also not defend his title at World Blitz 2024. It means two new world champions are guaranteed to be crowned. Carlsen also mentioned to Norwegian media that he will not play any more FIDE events. He is done with them. Although relatively scarcer, a wealth of instructional material also exists for those interested in chess solving. But few have ventured to teach how to compose a chess study or a problem—no definitive course or authoritative guide for this aspect of chess. Yet, like playing and solving, composing, too, is a teachable skill—or at least that is what Gady Costeff, the writer of the present article, believes. To put his notion to the test, he demonstrates how to craft an endgame study by starting with an attractive mate position and then working backwards, guided by a series of straightforward questions and answers.

World Rapid 2024 Day 1: Raunak stuns Firouzja, Carlsen makes a terrible start

Magnus Carlsen (NOR) had a disastrous start at FIDE World Rapid 2024. He barely escaped with a draw from jaws of defeat in Round 3 and 4 against GM Gleb Dudin (HUN) and GM Aleksandr Shimanov respectively. However, in Round 5, 18-year-old GM Denis Lazavik did not allow the defending champion to walk away unscathed. The World no.1 scored only 50% on Day 2.5/5. Raunak Sadhwani and Arjun Erigaisi had the best start among Indian players 4/5. Raunak is undefeated so far. He scored a fine victory over GM Alireza Firouzja (FRA) after the latter missed his opportunity to sacrifice his knight and gain the upper hand.
