Recently, a great champion has been giving back to the game that he loves most dearly. He is the Bengal Tiger Surya Shekhar Ganguly, 6 time National Champion and Anand's second. Surya's YouTube Channel, Surya Chess Talk, started around 2 weeks ago, has grown from strength to strength, with content as diverse as In Conversation with, where he speaks with the absolute chess elite like Anand and Aronian on various topics, and Fun Learning and Unlearning, where Surya speaks in depth about some of the finer aspects of how one thinks during a chess game. While most of them are based on theory, psychological and practical aspect of the game, it is safe to say that the amount of fiction written about the game is comparatively less. Meet Nihshanka Debroy, an Indian born author currently residing near Atlanta, Georgia launched a fictional take on the origin of the game with two parallel storylines. Sounds interesting right? After completing a four-part series with Vishy Anand, Arjuna Awardee and six-time consecutive National Champion GM Surya Sekhar Ganguly continued his series 'In Conversation with' none other than the two-time World Cup winner and Armenia no.1 Levon Aronian. In the episode Surya jokes about refusing a draw offer in the final round of World Rapid 2019 and regretting about it. But that was not the first time they were across a chess board, so where did they first meet each other? Rest in Peace Ennio Morricone 1928-2020

Every once in a while, we find a composer whose work transcends time. Ennio Morricone comes at the top of the list among the modern day music composers. On 6th July 2020, legendary Italian music composer, Ennio Morricone passed away. He was very fond of chess and played a couple of games with the strongest female chess player of all time Judit Polgar in 2004. In 2006 Turin Olympiad, he composed the theme of the Olympiad. At the same year he won an honorary Oscar Award. Ten years later in 2016, he won his first Oscar Award for The Hateful Eight in Best Original Score category. Endless Endgame Experience

Capablanca said, "In order to improve your game, you must study the endgame before everything else. For whereas the endings can be studied and mastered by themselves, the middle game and end game must be studied in relation to the end game". Many world champions and countless masters of the game emphasized on the importance of the endgame. Kidambi discusses a Rook vs Rook-Bishop endgame from the recently concluded Chessable Masters. The position was shown to him by his friend R Karthik, Kidambi also draws reference from Matthew Sadler's blog and a position Sandipan Chanda composed and shared with him last year. Shardul Gagare wins Letsup MCA GP Blitz 4

GM Shardul Gagare surprised everyone and won his first ChessBase India Online Blitz tournament. He scored 8.5/10, finished a half point ahead of the competition to win Letsup MCA GP Blitz 4. He will receive ₹7800 for his efforts. IM Terry Renato and GM Vugar Rasulov were placed second and third according to tie-breaks as both of them finished with 8.0/10. GM Vaibhav Suri maintained his GP standings lead with 31/40, followed by GP1 winner Rasulov at 26/40 and Abdusattorov at 21/40. Since best four out of five results will be counted, GP is still wide open. Registration for Blitz 5 is open. Can Vaibhav Suri win Letsup MCA Grand Prix?

Carlsen triumphs at the Chessable Masters

Magnus Carlsen made a clean sweep at Chessable Masters as he won all of his mini-matches without going into tie-breaks. On the second day of the Finals, Carlsen defeated Giri by 2.5-1.5 to clinch the championship. Giri had quite a bit of chances in all three draws he made but much to his chagrin, he missed them all. Nepomniachtchi did not miss the opportunity to take a jibe at that fact as Giri eliminated him in the Semi-Finals. Carlsen walked away with $45000 as the winner of the tournament while Giri won $27000 as the runner-up of the event. The next stop in Magnus Carlsen Invitational is Legends of Chess which starts from later this month 21st July.

Gukesh wins Late Shailesh Nerlikar Memorial Online Blitz Open

GM Gukesh D and GM Aravindh Chithambaram both scored 7.5/9, however Gukesh won Late Shailesh Nerlikar Memorial Online Blitz Open due to a better tie-break score. Aravindh was placed second. Six players finished with 7.0/9, out of them IM Terry Renato of Peru secured the second runner-up position according to the tie-break score. Victorious Chess Academy organized this event and sponsored ₹33000 total prize fund, IM Sagar Shah contributed another ₹12000 to make the total prize fund ₹45000. Total 102 players including 10 GMs, 15 IMs, 2 WGMs and 4 WIMs from India, Ireland, Peru, Russia and USA took part in this event.

Chessable Masters Finals: Carlsen wins the first mini-match

If you have to talk about epic rivalry at the top level of chess then that has to be between Carlsen and Giri. You must be wondering why. They take their frenemy to a whole new level with their continuous jibe and banters over twitter. That definitely makes things interesting when there are no games. Speaking of games, despite losing game two to Carlsen, Giri fought back and equalized the score 2-2 by winning the fourth game. He had a decisive advantage in game five also but unfortunately for him, he missed and settled for a draw. Carlsen penalized Giri for making a mistake early in game six and made sure Giri get no chances in that game. Now Giri must win the second mini-match to be in the title hunt. Do you think Giri will be able to bounce back today?

FIDE WSCC GP2: Vaishali eliminated by Gunina

Vaishali's fantastic run at FIDE chess. com Women's Speed Chess Championship Grand Prix leg 2 came to an end at Quarter-Finals as she went down 3-7 against Valentina Gunina of Russia. Gunina is a multi-time European Individual and Russian Women's champion. She is one of the strongest woman player to have never won a World title. So Vaishali had a surmountable task. She managed to score two victories and two draws. In the end, she had another opportunity during a bullet game but that probably wouldn't have changed the overall outcome of the match. Chessable Masters: Giri beats Nepomniachtchi in the Semi-Finals

Just over a week ago both World Champion Magnus Carlsen and Anish Giri joked about seeing each other in the final. You cannot deny the fact that it would make an interesting final now that Giri has beat Nepomniachtchi 3.5-2.5 in the third mini-match of their Semi-Finals. Their pre and post-match banters on twitter is well-known to the fans and it will be interesting to see who wins it. Giri despite having a bit of ups and downs, he has managed to pull through in all situations from tie-breaks to Armageddon. Carlsen is yet to show a chink in his armor in this tournament, but the finals will be a treat for those who love the game. Who do you think will win Chessable Masters - Carlsen or Giri?

FIDE WSCC GP2: Vaishali beats Anna Muzychuk

WGM Vaishali R continued her terrific run at FIDE chess.com Women's Speed Chess Championship as she knocked out former Women's World Rapid and Blitz Champion GM Anna Muzychuk by beating her 6-4 in the Round of 16. Despite being down by 2-4, she made a fantastic comeback and won the match by 6-4. She will face GM Valentina Gunina in the Quarter-Finals. Vaishali is at the fourth position in the GP Standings with 5 points. The only other Indian taking part in this GP was Harika who lost against the in-form and WSCC GP1 winner Anna Ushenina. Chessable Masters: Carlsen advances to the Finals

Ding Liren could not do well against Magnus 'The Magnanimous' in the second mini-match of the Semi-Final as he lost two mini-matches by 0-2 in Chessable Masters. Thus Carlsen became the first finalist and the journey of Ding Liren in the event came to an end. Meanwhile, Giri drew his first game in the second mini-match against Nepomniachtchi. However he lost the next one as he trapped his own knight. Making draws in the next two games didn't help either as the score became 1-1.
