Gukesh and Vaishali in Forbes India Showstoppers 2022-23 Top 50 list

44th Chess Olympiad individual Gold and team Bronze medal winner, GM D Gukesh had a phenomenal year in 2022. The youngest GM of India won a series of tournaments in Spain while remaining undefeated. He became the youngest Indian GM to cross 2700 and break into World Top 100. The unforgettable start of 8/8 at the Olympiad on top board is surreal. He also won the Spanish Honor League for C A Solvay along with Harikrishna. Gukesh also achieved the feat of the youngest ever to beat Magnus Carlsen. IM Vaishali R also had a fantastic year. She won both individual and team Bronze at the Olympiad, made her presence felt at her FIDE Women's GP debut, scored her second GM-norm and finished the year with a historical victory at the first edition of Tata Steel Chess India 2022 Women Blitz. Ritviz Parab victorious at 5th Kudremukh Trophy Rapid Rating Open 2022

FM Ritviz Parab scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win 5th Kudremukh Trophy Rapid Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Manigandan S S, Dhanush Ram M and Lad Mandar Pradip scored 8/9 each. They were placed second to fourth according to tie-breaks. This is Ritviz's second Rapid Rating Open tournament victory of 2022. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹300000 and 175 prizes were up for grabs. The top three prizes were ₹30000, ₹20000 and ₹10000 along with a trophy each. 19-year-old Hari Madhavan N B becomes the latest International Master of India

In December 2022, India got two GMs and four IMs. Aditya Mittal was first to become India's 77th GM. Then we got three more IMs - Jubin Jimmy, Sambit Panda and Shantanu Bhambure. Koustav Chatterjee became India's 78th GM on 31st December. On the very same day, 19-year-old Hari Madhavan N B scored his final IM-norm at 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. The teenager from Tamil Nadu became an International Master when he defeated GM Sandipan Chanda in the tenth round. He did not slow down after becoming an IM as he defeated GM Mitrabha Guha in the following game. Divya Deshmukh clinches MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship 2022 convincingly

WGM Divya Deshmukh defeated IM Bhakti Kulkarni in the final round to become a clear champion at MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship 2022. This is her second consecutive National Women title where she remained undefeated and finished a full point ahead at 9.5/11. WGM Mary Ann Gomes won against WIM Rucha Pujari to finish second scoring 9/11. Top seed of the tournament, WGM Vantika Agrawal overcame IM Nisha Mohota to finish third with a sole 8.5/11. Pranesh M dominates Rilton Cup 2022-23, becomes India's 79th Grandmaster

16-year-old IM Pranesh M scored 8/9, finished a full point ahead of the field to win Rilton Cup 2022-23. He took a no-draw approach. After losing his second round game, he won the next seven games to finish first, cross 2500 in the live ratings and become India's 79th Grandmaster. The teenager also became Tamil Nadu's 28th GM. Pranesh won a memento and SEK 22000 (approx. ₹170282). The last time an Indian won this event was in 2016-17 when Krishnan Sasikiran became champion. GM Raja Rithvik R is the only other Indian to make a top ten finish. He scored 6/9 to finish at eighth place. 15-year-old Manmay Chopra scored 7/9 to finish second in the Rilton Elo section (<2200). Rohit Gurung wins 1st Abja Suresh Memorial Rating Open 2022

Rohit Gurung, Mohit Kumar Soni, Divyanshu Kumar Singh and Rupam Mukherjee scored 6/7 each at 1st Abja Suresh Memorial Rating Open 2022. The second seed of the tournament, Rohit from Sikkim, won the tournament on tie-breaks. The remaining three - Mohit, Divyanshu and Rupam were adjudged second to fourth according to tie-breaks. This is Rohit's first-ever Rating Open tournament victory. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹80000 and 53 cash prizes were up for grabs. Pranav Anand triumphs at Groningen Chess Festival 2022 Open A

The reigning World Youth Under-16 Open champion, GM Pranav Anand won the Groningen Chess Festival 2022 Open A with an unbeaten 7.5/9. He finished a half point ahead of the competition and drew with the remaining podium finishers. GM Hagen Poetsch (GER) scored sole 7/9 to finish second. He also remained undefeated. Four players scored 6/9. IM Nico Zwirs (NED) secured third position according to tie-breaks. The total prize fund in Open A category was €7000. The first prize was The silver Zwanepol trophy and €2000. The last time an Indian won at Groningen Chess Festival was 25 years ago, when Vishy Anand won the Candidates Knockout Tournament in 1997. MPL 48th National Women R10: Can Divya repeat history?

WGM Divya Deshmukh drew with WIM Isha Sharma to stay half point ahead of the competition heading into the final round. Unlike the previous edition, Divya does not have a huge lead. If she draws her final round game against IM Bhakti Kulkarni and WGM Mary Ann Gomes beats WIM Rucha Pujari then, it will all come down to tie-breaks to decide the winner of MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship 2022. Since 2011, all new champion have won it at least twice in-a-row. Mary (2011-2013), IM Padmini Rout (2014-17) and Bhakti (2018-19). Karthik Venkataraman dominates MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022

GM Karthik Venkataraman drew his final round game against GM Visakh N R to win MPL 59th National Senior Chess Championship 2022. Karthik scored an unbeaten 10/13 and finished a half point ahead of the field. GM Abhijeet Gupta, Visakh, IM P Shyam Nikhil and IM Sayantan Das scored 9.5/13 each. They were placed second to fifth according to tie-breaks. Karthik became the only player to remain undefeated among the top ten finishers. The 23-year-old from Andhra Pradesh has secured plenty of podium finish throughout 2022, however this was his sole and biggest triumph of the year. Shantanu Bhambure - Mechanical Engineer pursues his passion and becomes an International Master

The month of December started with Aditya Mittal becoming India's 77th and Mumbai's second Grandmaster. Then we got two more IMs in the form of Jubin Jimmy and Sambit Panda. On 22nd December 2022, we got our third International Master of the month - Shantanu Bhambure. He scored his final IM-norm at 9th Chessable Sunway Sitges Open 2022. While we see teenagers scoring norms and earning titles, it is not often we get to see an adult scoring norms or achieving titles. The 27-year-old returned to chess after a brief hiatus from the sport in 2017 after becoming a Mechanical Engineer. He scored his first two IM-norms in two months at the end of 2019. MPL 48th National Women R9: Divya increases her sole lead

WGM Divya Deshmukh increased her sole lead by a full point by defeating Sunyuktha C M N. Just like the previous edition, Divya is now full point ahead of the field heading into the penultimate round of MPL 48th National Women Chess Championship 2022. WGM Mary Ann Gomes is the sole player trailing her by a half point at 7/9. She is followed by seven players at 6.5/9 each including the top seed WGM Vantika Agrawal. WGM Srija Seshadri missed a win against WIM Sakshi Chitlange. WIM Isha Sharma held IM Soumya Swaminathan to a draw. She will now face Divya in the penultimate round. Balkishan A scored 7/7 to win SIMSRH 1st Rapid Rating Open 2022. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Sudarshan Bhat made an unbeaten 6.5/7 to finish second. The top seed of the tournament, IM D V Prasad scored 6/7 and edged past eight more players to finish third on tie-breaks. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹200000. The top three prizes were ₹15000, ₹10000 and ₹7500 along with a trophy each. A total of 250 players took part from various part of the country. The one-day seven-round Rapid Rating tournament was organized by New Tumkur District Chess Association and MM Chess Development Trust on 3rd December 2022.
