Divya Deshmukh Golden, Silver for Mary Ann Gomes at Asian Continental Women 2023

IM Divya Deshmukh drew against WIM Xeniya Balabayeva (KAZ) in the final round to clinch the Gold at Asian Continental Women 2023. Divya scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 and finished a full point ahead of the competition. WGM Mary Ann Gomes edged past IM Batkhuyag Munguntuul (MGL) on tie-breaks to secure the Silver medal, Munguntuul got Bronze. Divya won two medals in two consecutive Asian Continental Women events. In 2022, she won Gold in Blitz and Bronze in Classical, now Gold in Classical and Silver in Blitz. Mary also won a medal each in consecutive Asian events - Silver in Blitz last year and now Silver in Classical. Abhimanyu and Mary qualify to the FIDE World Cup Open and Women 2023

IM Divya Deshmukh has already secured her place at next month's FIDE Women's World Cup 2023. She is joined by WGM Mary Ann Gomes. GM Shamsiddin Vokhidov (UZB) scored sole 7/9 to clinch Gold at Asian Continental 2023. Six players - GM Bardiya Daneshvar (IRI), IM Alisher Suleymenov (KAZ), GM Abhimanyu Puranik, GM Jingyao Tin (SGP), GM Arjun Erigaisi and GM Sethuraman S P scored 6.5/9 each. Bardiya and Suleymenov secured Silver and Bronze medal each according to tie-breaks. Abhimanyu qualified to the FIDE World Cup 2023. Arjun Erigaisi missed his final opportunity to secure a spot at the FIDE World Cup 2023. His last way is, getting a wild card by FIDE.

The top three prizes in the Open were $10000, $8000 and $7000, for Women $8000, $6000 and $5000 each. The Blitz event prizes in the Open were $3000, $2000 and $1000, for Women, $2000, $1000 and $700 each respectively. Local tax 20%. Prizes were shared among tied players.

A total of 87 players including 17 GMs and 21 IMs in the Open, 38 players including 5 IMs, 5 WGMs and 9 WIMs in the Women, took part from 18 countries across the world including India. The nine-round Swiss League Classical Rating tournament was held from 4th to 11th June 2023 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. It was organized by Ministry of Culture and Sports of Kazakhstan, the Asian Chess Federation, and the Kazakhstan Chess Federation with the support of the Akimat of Almaty. The time control of the tournament was 90 minutes / 40 moves + 30 mins / end + 30 seconds increment per move starting from move no.1.
