Alef Super Stars 2023 R5: Gritty Nihal draws a 101-move long battle against Yangyi

Nihal Sarin activated his defense mode in the fifth round of Alef Super Stars 2023. After sacrificing an exchange on 32nd move, the teenager had to showcase his defensive skills against the China no.3, Yangyi Yu for 68 moves to secure a half point. The 101-move long draw is the longest game of the event so far. The boy showed that he is capable of playing a long game after a ten move draw in the previous round. Sanan Sjugirov scored his first win of the event against the UAE no.1 - Salem Saleh. It was a clinical victory for the Hungary no.1. An Open Rapid tournament on the day of ICC World Cup 2023 Final

Organizing a chess tournament on the day of ICC World Cup 2023 Final is a bold move. A general reaction would be, not a lot of people will turn up to play chess. A total of 276 players including four IMs and a WIM, out of 280 registered, changed that notion. North 24 Parganas District Chess Association decided to organize a chess tournament at City Centre New Town mall. A total prize fund of ₹82600 was up for grabs. It goes without saying that it was a resounding success. Every year, a mall in Austria hosts a Rapid and Blitz Rating Open tournaments where strong players all around the world participate. The way chess is evolving and making progress, maybe that day is not far that chess tournaments regularly take place at a spectator friendly venue and noise is no longer an issue, just like the widely followed outdoor sports. Ding Liren won the World Chess Championship 2023 and became the 17th World Champion. It's been 200 days since the last game of chess that he has played publicly. The question on everyone's mind is - Where is Ding Liren and what is he up to? There have been very few interviews where the Chinese GM has given his thoughts on the match and the moves that he has played. During his period of being away from the world of chess, IM Sagar Shah managed to get in touch with him and did this interview. Ding speaks about the match with Nepo, his thoughts, life after match and more. 

Vaishali R becomes the third Indian woman to earn the Grandmaster title

IM Vaishali R became the third Indian woman to earn the Grandmaster title on Friday 1st December 2023. She also became Inda's 84th Grandmaster by scoring a win against FM Tamer Tarik Selbes at 4th Elllobregat Open 2023. India got its first female player as a Grandmaster in the form of Koneru Humpy back in 2002. Nine years later, Harika Dronavalli became the second Indian woman to earn the GM title. Now in 2023, twelve years later, Vaishali ended the search for the third Indian woman to earn the coveted GM title. The Chennai woman had an illustrious career so far, the GM title certainly cements her among the world's best. There are only 41 female players who have a GM title as FIDE Rating list December 2023. 13th London Chess Classic 2023 R1: Gukesh outplays Mateusz Bartel

D Gukesh started his 13th London Chess Classic 2023 with a victory over Poland no.3, GM Mateusz Bartel. The India no.5 outplayed the Pole, after the latter misplaced his knight at b6. Gukesh beautifully utilized it to his advantage and had no trouble converting it into a victory. The newly crowned World Senior 50+ champion - GM Michael Adams (ENG) was the only other victor of the first round. He defeated the Iran no.2 GM M Amin Tabatabaei. Gukesh will face the new England no.1, GM Nikita Vitiugov in the second round. It starts today at 2 p.m. local time, 7:30 p.m. IST. Alexei Fedorov dominates 7th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit 2023, Sai second and Arjun Adireddy third

GM Alexei Fedorov scored an unbeaten 7.5/9 to win 7th Tamil Nadu IM-norm Closed Circuit Chess Tournament 2023. He finished a staggering one and a half points ahead of the competition. Sai Vishwesh C and Arjun Adireddy scored 6/9 each. They were placed second and third respectively. Sai defeated Arjun in the third round. That helped him secure the second place. Nimmy A G becomes Kerala's first Woman International Master

Nimmy A G became Kerala's first Woman International Master in May 2023. She earned her first WIM-norm in 2006 and fulfilled all requirements by June 2012. However, all her norms occurring in India delayed the inevitable. After scoring four norms in India, Nimmy traveled to Budapest, Hungary this year when she earned her final norm to earn the WIM title. While pursuing for the WIM title, she became an Assistant Professor at a college, became a PhD in Commerce during that time. Nimmy's fortitude shows that if you want something truly, you can balance and overcome any obstacle that is in your way. The determination and perseverance is the key to etch your name in history. Gukesh set to make his debut at 13th London Chess Classic 2023

D Gukesh will make his debut at the 13th edition of London Chess Classic. He will battle against nine top players of the world in a round-robin Classical event. Nikita Vitiugov (ENG), M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI), Hans Niemann (USA), Michael Adams (ENG), Andrei Volokitin (UKR), Mateusz Bartel (POL), Jules Moussard (FRA), Luke McShane (ENG) and IM Shreyas Royal (ENG). The top four prizes are £15000, £10000, £7500 and £6000. The event takes place in Central London from 1st to 10th December 2023. This event could very well be Gukesh's final path to qualify to the FIDE Candidates 2024. The important part is he needs to do well, Candidates will always be there. Alef Super Stars 2023 R4: Contrasting draws

Nihal Sarin made a quick draw against Salem Saleh (UAE) in the fourth round of Alef Super Stars 2023. They will still play five more games - two Rapid and three Blitz, against each other. Sanan Sjugirov (HUN) had a hard-fought draw against Yangyi Yu (CHN). The majority of the game was a rook and knight endgame. The China no.3 maintains his sole lead 18/24, followed by Nihal 15/24, Sanan 9/24 and Salem 6/24. Only two more rounds of Classical games left before the triathlon moves to faster time controls. Nihal Sarin drew his third round game against Sanan Sjugirov at Alef Super Stars 2023. Their last Classical battle took place earlier this year at 6th Sharjah Masters which ended in a draw. The first eleven moves were exactly the same as the last time. However, Sanan deviated on the twelfth move with g5. The Hungary no.1 took an aggressive approach. It did not yield anything substantial and the game ended in a draw. Meanwhile, China no.3 Yangyi Yu grinded a positional advantage and converted it into a win after 75 moves. The position reached a completely winning same color bishop endgame for the Chinese when his opponent had no reason to continue further. Round 4 starts today at 4:30 p.m. local time, 6 p.m. IST. Ram Vishal Parab triumphs at 360 One Wealth Junior Under-15 GP Series 1 Rating 2023

Ram Vishal Parab scored an unbeaten 6.5/7 to win 360 One Wealth Junior Under-15 GP Series 1 Rating 2023. He finished a half point ahead of the competition. Arvind Iyer, Arnav Mahesh Koli and Paras Dilip Bhoir scored 6/7 each. They secured second, third and fourth place respectively according to tie-breaks. Ram defeated the eventual second runner-up Arnav in the sixth round. The total prize fund of the tournament was ₹250000. The top three prizes were ₹50000 + trophy, ₹30000 and ₹25000 each. District Chess Association, Dumka invites you to 3rd Dumka Rating Open 2023. The third edition of this rating open is offering a total prize fund of ₹815000. The top three prizes are ₹175000, ₹100000 and ₹50000 along with a trophy each. There are 25 main prizes. Total 80 prizes are up for grabs. Entry is FREE for GMs, IMs, WGMs and WIMs. For everyone else, entry fee is ₹1500 and ₹1000 for Dumka players till today Thursday 30th November. Mitrabha Guha dominates Reguengos de Monsaraz Chess Festival Rapid Open 2023 with a 2786 performance

GM Mitrabha Guha scored an unbeaten 8.5/9 to win Reguengos de Monsaraz Chess Festival Rapid Rating Open 2023. He finished a full point ahead of the field. GM Vitaliy Bernadskiy (UKR) scored sole 7.5/9 to secure second place. GM Carlos Albornoz Cabrera (CUB) and IM Semen Mitusov (NOR) scored 7/9 each. They secured third and fourth place respectively. Mitrabha did not face Bernadskiy. However, he defeated both Carlos and Mitusov in the seventh and eighth round respectively. The total prize fund combining Classical and Rapid event was €7070.
