26th Asian Youth R8: Narayani Umesh Marathe fingertips away from her second Gold

Narayani Umesh Marathe bounced back with a victory in the penultimate round of 26th Asian Youth Under-8 Girls 2024. She convincingly defeated Azaliya Balakanova (IRI) to move to 7.5/8. A win makes her a clear champion. However, a draw might still prove to be enough to win the Gold. Under-10 Girls: Bijesh Divi lost her game today. However, she still has medal chances. Under-12 Open: Aadik Theophane Lenin needs a draw in the final round against Siddhanth Poonja to secure a medal. However, a win may fetch him a better one, even a Gold maybe. Under-12 Girls: Pratitee Bordoloi leveled her score with her rival Le Vy Tran (VIE). 4th Cairns Cup R5: Five fighting draws

IM Alice Lee (USA) survived by the skin of her teeth against GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO) in Round 5 of 4th Cairns Cup 2024. The teenager misplayed in the endgame which almost cost her the game. Thanks to her neat little trick with the knight at the end. It helped her salvage a half point. GM Irina Krush (USA) had a great opportunity against GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI). The American did not take precautions to prevent perpetual checks by the former Women's World Champion. GM Harika Dronavalli defended well in a difficult position against GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR). GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) had a well-fought draw against GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN). Today is the sole rest day. Round 6 starts tomorrow Wednesday 19th June at 1 p.m. local time, 11:30 p.m. IST. Arjun Erigaisi convincingly clinches 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial with a round to spare

Arjun Erigaisi is in outstanding form. He is World no.4 in the live ratings for a reason. His live rating is now 2779.9 which means he is just 15.8 Elo rating points away from surpassing the World no.3 - Fabiano Caruana (USA). In the penultimate round of 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial, Arjun defeated Volodar Murzin to win the tournament with one round to go. Murzin made a minute error in the rook and minor piece endgame. That's all it took for Arjun to seize his opportunity and win the game. Samuel Sevian (USA) had an opportunity to push for a full point against Manuel Petrosyan (ARM) in the queen and minor piece endgame, but he missed it. She maintains her sole lead 6.5/7 in Under-8 Girls. Under-8 Open: Hriday Garg and Kavish Palaniappan K are trailing the sole leader by a full point at 5.5/7 each. Under-10 Girls: Bijesh Divi lost her lead. She is now at sole second place 6/7. Under-12 Open: Aadik Theophane Lenin drew his game. He is now at 5.5/7, a full point behind the sole leader. Under-12 Girls: Pratitee Bordoloi is relentless in her pursuit. She scored her second hat-trick of the event to move to 6/7. Under-16 Open: CM Velavaa Ragavesh maintained his lead 5.5/7. 14-year-old IM Alice Lee (USA) scored the biggest upset of 4th Cairns Cup 2024 in Round 4. She defeated GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI) in a definitive manner. The teenager's creative and beautiful attack was commendable, especially against a former Women's World Champion. GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) crushed the defending champion, IM Anna Zatonskih (USA) in just 20 moves to emerge sole leader 3/4. GM Harika Dronavalli drew with GM Irina Krush (USA). GM Elisabeth Paehtz (GER) missed a small but significant opportunity against GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR). Both Harika and Mariya are at 2.5/4 each. They will face each other in the fifth round. Arjun Erigaisi drew with Bogdan-Daniel Deac (ROU) in the seventh round of 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024. The sole leader had a well contested draw against the Romania no.2. The remaining four games also ended in draws. Thus, Arjun maintains his full point lead 5/7. The defending champion - Samuel Sevian (USA), Deac and M Amin Tabatabaei (IRI) are at 4/7 each. Tabatabaei has the best chance to score a full point in this round. However, he needed to find a tough maneuver with his queen and bishop pair against his opponent's cramped queen and knights. Abhay and Priyanshu spearhead team Little Brothers to win CJKS Premier Division League 2024

Little Brothers won CJKS Premier Division Chess League 2024 scoring 15/18. They finished a full point ahead of the runner-up, Kwality Sports Club 14/18. Chattogram Mohammedan Sporting Club Bluss finished third scoring 12/18. The winner, Little Brothers suffered sole match loss against Brothers Union in Round 4. Abhay Bandewar and Priyanshu Barua were the top scorers for the winning team. They scored 7/9 and 6.5/9 each to gain 20.4 and 28.6 Elo rating points. Shivansh Tiwari scored an unbeaten 7/9 and increased his rating by 49 points. He played for the eventual second runner-up team - CMSCB. Saurabh Choubey was the highest gainer among Indians. Under-8 Open: Sarbartho Mani and Kavish Palaniappan K are trailing their sole leader by a half point at 5/6 each. Under-10 Open: Advik Amit Agarwal joined the five-way lead 5/6. Under-10 Girls: Bijesh Divi maintains her lead with Alisa Genrietta Yunker 5.5/6 each. GM Alexandra Kosteniuk (SUI) bounced back with a victory over GM Nana Dzagnidze (GEO) in the third round of 4th Cairns Cup 2024. Kosteniuk won in a similar fashion as her previous loss. The Georgia no.1 woman misplayed in the opening allowing her opponent to get a signficant advantage. Kosteniuk had no trouble converting it into a full point. This is her second win of the event. The youngest participant of the tournament - IM Alice Lee (USA) drew with GM Harika Dronavalli. GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN), Kosteniuk, Harika and GM Mariya Muzychuk (UKR) are at 2/3 each. 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial R6: Arjun Erigaisi hunts Bluebaum's king, increases his sole lead

Arjun Erigaisi defeated Matthias Bluebaum (GER) to increase his sole lead by a full point at 5th Stepan Avagyan Memorial 2024. Arjun gobbled up two pawns in the middlegame and he managed to protect them. When the German declined the trade of queens, the World no.4 in live ratings, went for his opponent's king. Robert Hovhannisyan (ARM) scored the only other victory of the round. It was also his first win of the event and his opponent, Haik Martirosyan's (ARM) second loss. Haik misplayed in the sharp major piece endgame. It allowed his opponent to gain full control and liquidate into a favorable queen endgame. She capitalized on her opportunity when her opponent, IM Anna Zatonskih (USA) made a tactical error in the middlegame. GM Zhongyi Tan (CHN) and GM Irina Krush (USA) had a well-contested draw. Narayani Umesh Marathe, Bijesh Divi, Aadik Theophane Lenin and CM Velavaa Ragavesh are the four Indians at 4/4. The first three are coleaders in Under-8 Girls, Under-10 Girls and Under-12 Open category. Velavaa has emerged sole leader in Under-16 Open. Ajay Santhosh Parvathreddy held the top seed of Under-18 Open, IM Aldiyar Ansat (KAZ) to a draw in the fourth round. Kazakhstan's first and only female to become a Grandmaster, Zhansaya Abdumalik made the ceremonial first move of the third round with WGM Gulmira Dauletova, Executive Director, Kazakhstan Chess Federation.
