Four leaders at the 10th Mumbai Mayor's Cup 2017

by Niklesh Jain - 07/06/2017

Four rounds have been completed at the 10th Mumbai Mayor's Cup 2017. We have four leaders with a 100% score and three of them are Indians - GM Diptayan Ghosh, IM Sayantan Das, GM Deepan Chakravarthy and GM Niaz Murshed. We have some exclusive pictures sent to us from the venue and some very nicely played games by the players. Illustrated report from the financial capital of India!

The Mumbai Mayor's Cup is one of the best tournaments in India and is being held at Mount Litera School in Bandra Kurla Complex

The tournament will be played from 4th to the 11th of June 2017

The event in Mumbai was preceded by the Bhubaneshwar KIIT Open. Although the Bhubaneshwar tournament was really strong, it was a pity that no Indian players made a norm. In order to overcome this problem the first two rounds of the Mumbai Mayor's Cup witnesses accelerated pairing.

Accelerated pairing simply means that the tournament is divided into two halves and the upper half players are paired against each other and the bottom half against themselves. In this way, the norm seekers get strong opponents right from the word go. Of course, after two rounds you usually see a skewed pairing in round three, but things were back to normal by the fourth round.

India's talent Diptayan Ghosh, who is looing at 2600 Elo pretty soon, played a nice positional game to outplay IM P. Iniyan in the fourth round

On 3.0/4 is GM Sahaj Grover

There are three categories at the Mayor's Cup. Above 2000 in the A-category (although there are more than 100 players below 2000 rating), 1600-2000 in the B category and Below 1600 in the C.

Mrudul Dehankar is now maturing into a very dangerous player. With draw against GM Abdulla-Al-Rakib and win against GM Raset ZIatdinov, she is on 3.5/4 and already gaining well over 70 Elo.
