Jaffna to Host Landmark First-Ever IM Norm Round Robin Event in December 2026
Sri Lankan chess is set to witness a historic breakthrough as the Jaffna District Chess Association (JDCA) announces the First-Ever International Master (IM) Norm Round Robin Tournament in Jaffna. Held under the banner of the Jaffna International Chess Championship 2026, the landmark 9-round classical event will take place from December 5 to December 9, 2026, at Chelva Palace, Jaffna, Sri Lanka.
"Where Sri Lankan Chess Creates History"
Approved by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka (CFSL), this initiative provides a crucial platform for ambitious players across South Asia and abroad to fight for coveted IM norm requirements. Organised under the central theme "Where Sri Lankan Chess Creates History," the closed round-robin format aims to elevate local talent while hosting seasoned international masters in a competitive classical setting.
Eligibility and Format
The tournament follows a standard 10-player closed Round Robin format over nine classical rounds under FIDE time controls. The entry is open to players holding a FIDE rating of 2200 and above. Players rated below 2199 who wish to test their mettle in this elite field are encouraged to contact the organizers directly for special consideration.
To ensure a strong rating average and ideal norm chances, the organisers are offering complimentary entry and accommodation to titled players and participants rated 2400+.
