Budapest to Host Official Pilot of the FIDE-Approved Total Chess World Championship Tour

by Devansh Singh - 23/07/2026

A new era in professional chess is set to launch this winter as Budapest hosts the official pilot event for the Total Chess World Championship Tour. Running from 10–21 November 2026, the landmark event developed by Norway Chess and approved by FIDE aims to redefine how elite competitive chess is conducted and consumed worldwide. Hosted at the historic Anantara New York Palace Budapest Hotel, the pilot tournament will gather the world's top male and female players, including World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen, to crown chess’s most complete player.

A Unified Format: Three Time Controls, One Champion

Unlike traditional tournaments focused on a single time control, the Total Chess World Championship Tour introduces a multi-discipline format designed to test every facet of a player's skill set:

  • Blitz: Explosive speed and tactical sharpness.

  • Rapid: High-tempo intensity balancing calculation and time management.

  • Fast Classic: Strategic depth delivered in a modern, streamlined classical tempo.

The cumulative performance across all three disciplines will determine the overall winner. This pilot in Budapest serves as the official benchmark, mirroring the exact regulations, format, and prize structure that will define the inaugural full season set to launch in March 2027, where multiple international host cities will compete to crown the FIDE World Combined Champion.

Key Stakeholder Perspectives

Kjell Madland, CEO of Total Chess, emphasized the vision behind the initiative:

"The Total Chess World Championship Tour is built on a simple belief—that the world's best chess player should be able to excel across every format of the game. By bringing together Fast Classic, Rapid, and Blitz under one championship, we're creating a more complete sporting test while making elite chess more exciting and accessible for fans around the world."

Arkady Dvorkovich, President of FIDE, underscored FIDE's commitment to innovation:

"As chess continues to evolve, FIDE's role is to embrace innovation that strengthens our sport while respecting its rich tradition. The Total Chess World Champion Tour is a natural evolution... We are convinced that the tour will attract new audiences, commercial partners, and greater media interest, helping us expand chess globally."

Dr. Zoltán Polyánszky, President of the Hungarian Chess Federation, expressed pride in hosting the event in a city with a rich chess heritage:

"It is an absolute honour for Budapest to host the Total Chess World Championship Tour pilot and welcome so many of the world's finest players... We are proud that Budapest has once again been chosen as the stage for a landmark moment in the sport."

High-Profile Investment and Commercial Backing

The Tour has garnered significant interest outside the traditional chess sphere, securing substantial backing from prominent sports figures and international investors. Notable financial backers include Norwegian football star Erling Haaland and investor Morten Borge through Chess Mates, alongside Olympic cross-country skiing champion Johannes Høsflot Klæbo. Their involvement highlights growing confidence in the commercial sustainability and global footprint of professional chess.
