Vietnam dominates ASEAN+ Age-Groups Standard Chess Championships 2023
The first competitions - Standard Chess (Individual and Teams) - saw Vietnam taking a massive 30 Golds, 14 Silvers and 19 Bronze, with second placed Philippines far behind with just 5 Gold and 12 Silver! No less than 10 countries medalled, in third place Myanmar, then followed by New Zealand, hosts Thailand, India, Indonesia, China, Malaysia, and Singapore. In Individual competition, most eyes were on the U-20 competition which gave a GM norm together with the direct IM title and in the Open, IMs Daniel Quizon and Michael Concio Jr. of the Philippines took Gold and Silver ahead of Vietnam’s Duc Tri Ngo, Malaysia’s Jun Ying Tan and Thailand’s Pin Laohawirapap, all who shared Bronze. ASEAN Chess
This year, a regional chess variant which combines all the characteristics of different chess games, invented and adopted by the ASEAN Chess Confederation (ACC) - ASEAN Chess - was reintroduced as an exhibition “or friendly” competition.
Since the rules was formalised in 2010, no less than three editions of the South East Asian (SEA) Games, this chess was included as a sport and the leadership of all 10 ASEAN member Federations and in agreement that this will become permanent feature of all future SEA Games.
The “friendly exhibition” match very rapidly became a serious 18 player tournament with the best of Thai Chess (Makruk) playing and the national teams of Myanmar and Cambodia showing up to defend their countries honours and having bragging rights!
Can we hope to see an ASEAN Chess Championship and more regular competitions in the very near future?
A rating list based on the results of the three SEA Games competitions and this “friendly match”, arguably the only official events so far, is going to be published, and perhaps in the years to come titles might even be introduced!
