The tournament was organized by Delhi Chess Association at Hotel Caspia in New Delhi from 23rd to 27th March 2019. Over 610 players from five different countries Australia, Germany, Nepal, Turkey and India, participated in this five-day 9-round Swiss League tournament having 136 prizes in total worth ₹ 1818000.

An interview was conducted by the author of this article with the champion of the tournament IM Vardaan Nagpal.

Shahid Ahmed (SA): How does it feel to win DCA Open 2019? Did you expect to win it before you started your tournament?

Vardaan Nagpal (VN): Of course it feels great to win the tournament and as it started just a week after I finished my schools final exams and it was a very last minute decision to play which was made just  a few days before the tournament. I wasn’t expecting to win anything and  just wanted to play the best games I could and see what happens as I was playing after a nearly 3 month gap from chess.

Vardaan had a meteoric rise last year which we covered here

SA: What do you plan on doing with the prize money?

VN: I will probably use the prize money for chess related things like playing tournaments and buying books to be able to improve my play further.

SA: Whom will you thank for your success?

VN: I would like to thank my parents who have always been supportive towards me in every way and everyone who has wished well for me.

SA: Who is your coach?

VN: Currently I don’t have any formal coach.

Vardaan en route making three IM-norms and a GM-norm in ten tournaments

SA: How does it to feel win a tournament after more than a year?

VN: It feels great to win a tournament after a long time, even though I have had many ups and downs in the past. I have never given up hope and stopped trying. I believe that it is just a key factor to get success in any field.

SA: You have won State Amateur, State Under-25 and Delhi Open 'C' before. Out of all the triumphs, which one is your favorite and why?

VN: I’d say that Delhi open C 2015 was my favorite as back then I wasn’t that serious about chess but that result which was completely unexpected motivated me to work harder and set higher goals for myself.

SA: Which school are you studying in? In which standard?

VN: I’m studying in Modern School Vasant Vihar, New Delhi and just starting class 12.

Vardaan attended Jacob Aagaard's training camp in April 2017

SA: How do you balance chess and studies? Which one do you prefer more?

VN: I usually take breaks for as long as necessary at the time to study for my exams. Recently I didn’t play for about 3 months due to exams. I also attend school from time to time but the rest of the time I try to focus on chess fully.

SA: How much support do you get from school for chess?

VN: My school is very supportive towards me as they allow me to take holidays from school whenever I need to go for tournaments.

SA: What's next for you?

VN: I definitely plan on playing some tournaments in the near future but I haven’t made any plans as of yet.

SA: Thanks for speaking with ChessBase India and I wish you all the best in your future endeavors.

VN: Thank you.
