Tepe Sigeman & Co 2022 R1: Arjun Erigaisi beats Shirov, now World no.58

by Shahid Ahmed - 04/05/2022

Arjun Erigaisi scored a fiery win against Alexei Shirov (ESP) in the first round of TePe Sigeman & Co Tournament 2022. This win moved him three places up in the live ratings. Thus he is now World no.58. Salem Saleh (UAE) was the only other victor of the round. He defeated Czech Republic no.1 David Navara in his typical fashion of a great display of attack. Arjun will face the UAE no.1 in the second round. Hans Niemann (USA) and Nils Grandelius (SWE) drew with Michael Adams (ENG) and defending champion Jorden van Foreest (NED) respectively. Round 2 starts today at 3:00 p.m. CET (6:30 p.m. IST). Photo: Lars OA Hedlund/TePe Sigeman & Co Tournament 2022

Arjun - Shirov: 1-0

It is well-known that the Botvinnik System in the Semi-Slav produces sharp games. The encounter between Arjun Erigaisi (2675) and Alexei Shirov (ESP, 2695) was no less, either.

Position after 29.Rd2

White arrived at a completely winning position within 30 moves. Despite Black being ahead by a pawn, the b5-pawn combined with the bishop at c6 is making things extremely difficult for the black king. 29...a3 was played here. 30.Rxd8+ Kxd8 31.Qd3+ Qd4 32.Qxa3 would have been a quicker win for White. Or 30...Qxd8 31.h6 is also winning. The game continued 30.Ra2 Qc3 31.h6 Rh8 now White found a beautiful backward move 32.Qd1!

Position after 32.Qd1

White won the game in another nine moves.
